I finally had time for the restroom.

I walked from one end of the corridor to the other.

Passing the stairwell, I suddenly heard my name.

I instinctively leaned closer, then stopped.

I could hear someone on the phone inside.

It was Lu Guanshan’s voice.

A faint smell of smoke drifted out. He laughed:

“Xu Zheng is interesting, but she’s too stubborn.”

“I waste my time chasing her every day, and she complains I’m getting in the way of her work.”

“A pretty low-grade Guide—if she doesn’t stick with me, what can she accomplish on her own?”

“Still, the challenge is kind of fun. I just wonder how long she can keep up the act.”

“Of course I know people are giving her trouble. Why would I stop it? Only then will she see how much good being with me can do her.”

I turned and kept walking toward the restroom, then splashed my face at the sink.

I looked up at myself in the mirror.

Low-grade?

Ever since Lu Guanshan confessed to me, I kept hearing that word.

But people of B and C rank were the most common in the world, the vast majority.

The treatment center where I worked was the best one in this district.

I was the finest B-rank Guide there.

I received commendations all the time; my work was even on a par with that of some A-rank Guides.

Did all my hard work really matter less than one confession from Lu Guanshan?

My phone rang. I picked up to a torrent of abuse.

One of Lu Guanshan’s obsessive admirers.

Someone must have leaked my information.

I hit record and saved the evidence.

I wiped the water from my face and hands, and saw the exhaustion in the mirror that I couldn’t wipe from my eyes.

I sighed, weary to the bone.

Did I really have to say yes to make all this trouble stop?

……

A while later.

Lu Guanshan appeared at my workstation again, holding a bouquet.

The door wouldn’t close, and quite a crowd of onlookers had gathered.

He was back to his dashing, debonair self, holding out the flowers:

“Today’s bouquet. Do you like it?”

I didn’t like it.

Lu Guanshan had a pair of flirtatious peach-blossom eyes, and the look he gave me seemed deeply affectionate.

His voice carried a gentle tolerance too.

A complete contrast to the arrogance in the stairwell.

I pulled out my phone and played the harassing call from the restroom on speaker.

The crude curses blaring from the phone instantly shattered the staged romantic atmosphere.

I sighed:

“Lu Guanshan, you’re excellent. Lots of people adore you. I’m utterly ordinary among them.

“I don’t know why you like me, but your affection has caused me a great deal of trouble. Can you stop all this?”

Lu Guanshan froze for a moment, then made a promise:

“I’ll handle all of this. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

“But as long as you accept my courtship, no one will dare bother you, and I can give you better resources and conveniences.”

There it was again—promises on his lips, zero action.

I gave up trying to communicate and said coldly:

“Please don’t disturb me at work.”

A wave of gasps came from outside the door. Some people looked ready to rush in and accept on my behalf.

Lu Guanshan dropped the smile, a chill creeping into his eyes.

He lowered his voice:

“Xu Zheng, I’m not a patient man.”

I glared right back, refusing to yield:

“Neither am I.”

Lu Guanshan stared at me for a few seconds, then broke into a grin:

“I love your personality. See you tomorrow, baby.”
