Chapter 8

I followed Zhi Yan back to the Demon Realm, only to find that during his absence, Shadow had been frantically fanning the flames of discord. He had actually managed to stir up a Rebel Army that was now rampaging through the Demon Realm and had even occupied the Demon Emperor’s Palace.

“What are we going to do? Can you still fight?”

I looked at Zhi Yan with worry.

Zhi Yan took a ragged breath.

“This Rebel Army is something I lured out on purpose. I deliberately let them grow; everything is within my calculations.”

That was a relief. I let out a sigh.

“However, I’m about to give birth. Within the next four hours.”

“…”

I nearly fell to my knees in front of him.

With no other choice, I could only secretly bring him back to my old home.

This was the safest place I had ever stayed-a crack in a mountain cliff, a place where it was hardest for plants to survive. There stood a Cliffside Pine.

I used to carefully siphon nutrients from it, and it had always ignored me, seemingly indifferent to my existence.

Over time, I took root there as well. It wasn’t until I took human form that I thought about returning to the gathering place of the Flower Demons to see if I could be accepted.

In the end, I was still rejected.

They looked down on my weak, pathetic appearance.

I could only wrap my heart in layers of protection to avoid being hurt by my own kind.

Zhi Yan looked at the cramped space among the roots of the Cliffside Pine and showed a look of disdain.

I shoved him straight inside anyway.

Because inside, there was a hidden world.

There was a cave within the cliff, containing a flower bed woven from tangled vines, petals, and leaves. It was the bed I had put the most effort into decorating.

To me, this was home-the only place that could accommodate me.

I never expected that, through a twist of fate, it would become Zhi Yan’s delivery room.

“What kind of thing did you bring back?” The Cliffside Pine had not yet taken human form; this was the first time it had ever initiated a conversation with me.

“The Demon Emperor,” I said.

The Cliffside Pine shuddered.

Zhi Yan glanced at the Cliffside Pine, frowning with a hint of jealousy as he asked, “You two have always lived together?”

“Mhm, mhm.” I nodded.

The Cliffside Pine had a strong sense of self-preservation. Sensing that something was wrong, its needles began to quiver.

“Is it male or female?” Zhi Yan asked me again.

“I’m female!” the Cliffside Pine shrieked, beating me to the answer. “Even though I haven’t taken human form yet, I’ll definitely become a woman. Please rest easy, Your Highness the Demon Emperor!”

The killing intent radiating from Zhi Yan faded slightly. He finally set up a barrier to begin the birth, wrapping the Cliffside Pine inside it as well.

I held my breath and transformed into vines, forming another layer of protection with my own body outside the barrier.

As Zhi Yan began the labor, his eyes were fixed intently on me. Just when I thought he was going to scold me, he suddenly spoke in the gentlest tone I had ever heard from him.

“Fei Xu, if there’s danger later, don’t worry about me. Just run.”

Deep in my heart, it felt as if some vine-the barrier I had built around myself-had snapped.

A warm sensation spread through my entire body.

“That won’t happen. You just focus on finishing this quickly. I can hold them off.”

I responded to him just as gently.

Zhi Yan’s expression shifted instantly. Clutching his lower abdomen, he barked with forced bravado, “You tell me exactly how I’m supposed to ‘finish this quickly’?”

I shut my mouth, realizing I was only making things worse.

But clearly, Zhi Yan was a jinx as well.

Danger really did arrive, and it came in a massive crowd.

Shadow arrived at the cliffside, leading his Demon Race Army and the Rebel Army from the Demon Realm.

Looking at that swarming mass, where every single individual possessed demonic power a hundred times stronger than mine, I couldn’t help but start to lose my nerve.

“Are you done yet?” I asked Zhi Yan cautiously.

Zhi Yan didn’t answer. I looked over and saw him straining in silence, his face tight with effort.

He was right in the middle of it.

I grew tense and immediately reinforced the barrier.

Shadow seemed to sense the fluctuations in demonic energy caused by Zhi Yan giving birth and immediately launched an attack.

He was attacking while simultaneously launching a psychological assault on the mother of my child.

“A dignified Demon Emperor, a male snake spirit, actually pregnant and laying an egg-you’ve disgraced the entire Snake Clan.”

“A Demon Emperor giving birth suffers a massive loss of demonic energy. You are no longer fit to lead!”

I was absolutely livid.

Zhi Yan, who usually bullied me into a pretzel, was silent now. Not because he wanted to be, but because he couldn’t spare the breath; he was busy pushing.

How could I let someone else bully the person who usually bullies me!

I snapped back with a verbal barrage.

“Oh, if it isn’t Zhang San, the guy who doesn’t even have a physical body?”

“The Demon Emperor has managed the economy so well that the people live in peace and prosperity. You’re out here backstabbing and starting wars-have you even considered how everyone feels? You’re messing with people’s livelihoods, okay?”

“Can’t you see the members of the Demon Race behind you are all reluctant?”

“They have businesses to get back to at home.”

The Demon Race soldiers behind him shifted restlessly. Being called out like that seemed to make them a bit embarrassed.

However, no one refuted me.

The Shadow’s face turned green with rage.

“The Demon Emperor’s pregnancy was caused by a cultivation deviation. As far as I know, the last person he saw before that happened was you.”

I was talking out of my ass, just pinning whatever blame I could on him.

But then I saw the Shadow’s expression shift guiltily.

Wait, for real?

Suddenly, everything clicked.

He hated Zhi Yan, was consumed by envy and jealousy, so he intentionally used some method to trigger a cultivation deviation. At the time, if it hadn’t been me, it would have been someone else who stumbled into the Secret Realm.

Zhi Yan was destined to get pregnant.

Being pregnant would drain his demonic energy and deplete his strength, and that’s when the Shadow would swoop in to take advantage…

Does he want Zhi Yan’s body? No, what he wants is-

The child!

How could Zhi Yan’s body be as useful as a fresh, newborn body?

Moreover, this child has a bloodline connection to the Shadow, which would allow it to drain Zhi Yan’s demonic power even more effectively.

What a massive scheme!

Even his previous attempt to turn me against Zhi Yan was part of it. He wanted Zhi Yan to be truly alone, to lose everything.

What a malicious, scheming green-tea guy!

I’m such a genius for figuring all this out.

Realizing I was about to spill some major tea, the Shadow charged straight at me to shut me up.

I met him head-on.

This was the most courageous I’d been since the day I was born.

Cliffside Pine watched me, completely stunned.

How about that? Impressed, right?

Before I could even finish my tragic, heroic expression, the Shadow slammed into Zhi Yan’s barrier. The impact nearly caused the Shadow to dissipate.

“There’s no need for you to sacrifice yourself yet.”

Zhi Yan’s voice rang in my ear.

“Watch the child.”

I shivered, feeling intensely turned on by his raspy voice.

I turned my head and saw a pure white egg lying on my bed of flowers.

He did it! A smooth delivery!

Zhi Yan had already charged out, his magnificent demonic energy surging back around him like a flamboyant, rainbow-colored snake.

He looked incredibly cool!

“You’re so fast, Hubby!”

I wept with joy, giving him my utmost encouragement.

Zhi Yan’s form faltered for a moment, and the multicolored light around him took on a slight pinkish hue.

He looked back and grumbled something, seemingly telling me to shut up.

Without the egg constantly draining his energy, Zhi Yan was wild, showing off his prowess right in front of me.

He crumpled the Shadow into a ball and kneaded him in his hands like dough.

The Shadow screamed repeatedly.

I cradled the warm egg and looked up at him.

“See that, kid? That’s your cool mother.”

A soft, buzzing, youthful sound came from inside the egg.

“Then who are you?”

“Me?”

“I’m your daddy.”

I finally got to say the line. It felt great.
