Chapter 9

Zhi Yan returned in triumph from the great battle. The rebels had been dealt with, and the citizens of the Demon Realm cheered to welcome his return-only to look at me by his side with confusion.

“Is that the Demon Emperor’s Favored Concubine?”

“Isn’t that just a Dodder Flower Demon? Her?”

The Flower Demons recognized me and began to whisper among themselves.

I held the egg, looking every bit the part of a virtuous wife and mother.

“She definitely used her body to climb the ranks. Look, they even have an egg already.”

The aura around Zhi Yan grew sharp and agitated.

I tried to comfort him. “It’s fine. I’ll be leaving soon anyway. As long as you don’t kill me, you can keep the child or not, it’s up to you. You can marry whoever you want in the future.”

Zhi Yan snapped his head around to look at me. His gaze made me feel like some heartless scumbag who was abandoning his wife and child.

What did I do to provoke him this time?!

The people around us started whispering again.

“She’s nothing without that egg. It’s just a child; anyone can give birth.”

“Her figure has completely gone out of shape after having a kid.”

“Dodder Flowers are naturally weak and have a hard time with childbirth. This egg was probably laid at the cost of her life. She’s certainly desperate.”

Zhi Yan’s expression shifted. He suddenly stopped in his tracks, turned, and glared at the Flower Demons.

The Flower Demons trembled and quickly dropped to their knees.

Zhi Yan pulled me into his arms with a sudden jerk. I could hear his heart thumping violently.

“She did not use her body to climb the ranks. We are together because of mutual love.”

“From this day forward, she is your Demon Empress.”

“Furthermore, I was the one who laid the egg. Does anyone have a problem with that?”

“…”

The crowd fell into an eerie silence.

I felt like I was dreaming.

Demon Empress? Had he lost his mind?

The moment we returned to the Demon Emperor’s Palace, I couldn’t help but ask him.

“Are you joking? How can I be the Demon Empress? I’m just a Dodder Flower.”

“Why can’t you be the Demon Empress? Who says a Dodder Flower can’t be the Demon Empress?”

Zhi Yan countered, his eyes burning with an intensity that made my face flush.

“Here, I am the rule.”

I was struck by how incredibly cool he looked.

The egg in my arms suddenly let out a muffled voice.

“Daddy, Mommy, won’t one of you incubate me?”

“Even just for show is fine. Otherwise, this is really awkward for me.”

Zhi Yan impatiently tossed it onto the bed.

“Can’t you see I have matters to discuss with your mother?”

I stared at him, stunned.

He strode toward me, his tail gently coiling around my waist, sending a wave of heat through my body.

“We even have a child, and yet you say you’re leaving?”

“Abandoning your wife and child? You heartless woman.”

His deep, resonant voice made my knees go weak.

“I…”

I was on the verge of surrendering to his charms.

Just as I was about to give in and agree, he suddenly let out a muffled groan. A wisp of a dark shadow flickered across his chest.

“What’s wrong?”

My heart tightened. I immediately pulled his clothes open, but aside from his pectoral muscles, I saw nothing.

“A clone of the Shadow has entered my Spiritual Consciousness.”

The Shadow?

Zhi Yan had clearly sealed him away, yet he still had a trump card left.

“What do we do now?” I asked anxiously.

“You come inside and get him out.”

Me, go inside…

That sounded a bit strange.

Whatever.

I held my breath and focused, and Zhi Yan pulled me into his Sea of Spiritual Consciousness.

His Sea of Spiritual Consciousness was a desolate wasteland, yet the sky was filled with countless clouds.

The initial clouds were his childhood memories.

His mother had forced him to yield to his younger brother in everything. Thus, every toy, every treat, and everything he ever liked was snatched away by the Shadow.

Yet the Shadow continued to act like a manipulative victim, winning everyone’s pity.

I felt a pang of sympathy for Zhi Yan.

But soon, I was left speechless.

While the Memory Clouds of the past ten thousand years were pitifully few, the vast majority of what followed was…

Me.

All sorts of versions of me.
