The Desperate Husband with Spikes - Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I was notorious among the capital’s elite for being brazen and willful. The rotten things I’d done could fill basket after basket.
Even if I got divorced, it wouldn’t affect the partnership between the Zhong Family and the Huo Family.
After mulling it over for a few days, I called home and told my father what I wanted.
He refused.
“What do you think a marriage alliance between two families is?!”
“So what if he’s impotent? As long as he treats you well in public, isn’t that enough?”
“For prominent families like ours, marriage is nothing but a means to an end. Everyone sees whoever they want on the side!”
A bitter ache spread through my heart.
“Is that why you and Mom ended up divorcing and fighting over the assets? And why neither of you wanted me?”
My father fell silent. It was a long while before he finally spoke.
“Don’t mention your mother!”
“If you want a divorce, discuss it with Huo Xun yourself.”
“I’m an old man. How could I possibly control you? Having a daughter like you must be the result of eight lifetimes of bad luck!”
My lips curled in mockery.
No one had asked whether I wanted to be born, either.
Just then, President Fang from the neighboring real estate company invited me to dinner.
I messaged Huo Xun and told him not to wait for me to eat.
The typing indicator lingered for a while.
After a long pause, he finally replied with a single word: “Okay.”
While we were discussing the project, President Fang kept glancing behind him. Rubbing his arms, he said, “Let’s not pick this restaurant next time. I can’t shake the feeling that someone’s watching us. It’s giving me the creeps.”
I didn’t dare say a word.
Because the person making him feel that way was none other than my husband from our arranged marriage, who was dining in a corner of the restaurant.
On my way back, I stopped by the law firm to pick up the divorce agreement they’d drafted for me.
Then I handed it to Huo Xun.
I thought he would agree to end our marriage amicably, but his reaction was unexpectedly intense.
“I won’t agree to this!”
“When you said you liked me, was that a lie?”
“Or have you simply grown tired of me?”
I hesitated. “No…”
He tried desperately to remain calm, but his voice still came out hoarse. “Then why are you so determined to get divorced?”
My gaze drifted away from his dress pants, and I avoided his eyes.
Impotence was humiliating, after all.
If I told him the truth, I might leave him with even deeper psychological scars.
So I said, “Because being with you is boring. You’re so much older than me. We’re not right for each other.”
Huo Xun had never lost his composure like this before.
“I can work out. I can take better care of my skin. I can make myself look younger…”
“Ningning, I’ll work hard at it!”
I couldn’t bear to listen anymore. My heart aching, I cut him off.
“Huo Xun, you should know that none of those things will solve the real problem.”
All the color drained from Huo Xun’s face.
He looked as though he might collapse.
At last, he forced out a few words.
“Do you want a divorce because I’m too old, or because there’s someone else?”
I froze.
He had misunderstood my dinner with President Fang.
If this misunderstanding could get him to agree to the divorce, there was no harm in playing along.
“That’s right. So, Huo Xun, sign the papers.”
