The Evil Deity's Second Career - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
“Is my face really that terrifying?”
Ji Lanci looked at the Emperor, who was unconscious on the bed and twitching occasionally, and curled her lip.
I looked at the Emperor, then back at Ji Lanci. “Does he think you’re a ghost?”
The Emperor remained unconscious, so Ji Lanci and I crouched by the bedside to discuss the topic of whether to kill him or not.
“Strike while the iron is hot! I suggest we do it now.”
Ji Lanci disagreed. “No, I want him to die knowing exactly why. I can’t let him off that easily.”
We went back and forth, neither of us agreeing with the other.
“Sir, stop arguing with me. Are you afraid you won’t be able to kill him once he’s awake?”
Reverse psychology?
Too bad for her; I wasn’t falling for it.
“How about this: I’ll kill him and let him go down to the Underworld to apologize to your family in person.”
Ji Lanci gave me a look that said, “I might not be the smartest person here, but don’t treat me like an idiot.”
While Ji Lanci and I were locked in our endless debate over the Emperor’s life or death, neither of us noticed that he had slowly opened his eyes.
“Someone… guards…”
Ji Lanci pinched her throat and answered in a high-pitched voice, “What are Your Majesty’s orders?”
“Help me up.”
With Ji Lanci’s assistance, the Emperor sat up, gasping for air. “I had a nightmare. I dreamed of Consort Lan.”
“That wasn’t a dream. It was real.”
With that, Ji Lanci looked up and smiled brightly at the Emperor. “Do I look any different from the woman in your dream, Your Majesty?”
“A ghost! A ghost! There’s a ghost! Guards! Guards!”
The Emperor collapsed to the floor, scrambling backward while screaming.
As if anyone would come. I had already cleared those people out long ago.
“So noisy!”
I kicked the Emperor, the force of it sending him tumbling across the floor like a rolling log.
“A ghost! There’s a ghost!”
He couldn’t see me, which only made him more terrified.
The sword in my hand hummed, impatient to taste the blood of this mortal sovereign.
“I am no ghost, but you are about to become one.”
Ji Lanci looked down at the once-mighty ruler from above. A smile played on her lips, but her eyes held nothing but icy hatred.
“Consort Lan, how dare you!”
“Consort Lan is dead. Standing before you is the daughter of the Ji Family, Ji Lanci. Don’t forget that, Your Majesty. Otherwise, when you reach the Underworld, you won’t even know why you died.”
The Emperor trembled violently, his eyes filled with horror.
“The Ji Family? Which Ji Family? I don’t know! I don’t know!”
“Your Majesty is so obsessed with cultivation that you naturally wouldn’t care about such trivial matters. But I haven’t dared to forget for even a single day! If I had known sooner that it was your doing, I would have killed you the moment I entered the palace.”
“You… you wouldn’t dare!”
Ji Lanci approached him step by step. The Emperor tried to hide, but she pinned him down under her foot.
“Let me help refresh your memory. Where did the silver to build the Stargathering Tower come from?”
The Emperor cowered, not daring to answer.
“Was it from the Ji Family bank? Do you remember now?”
“This entire world belongs to me!”
Even with death at his door, he still dared to be stubborn.
“Your uncle’s army is at the city gates. Why aren’t you running?”
The Emperor laughed maniacally. “Why should I run? I am the Son of Heaven, the Sovereign of Men. I am about to join the ranks of the deities!”
Listening from the side, I finally reached my limit.
So much dawdling. Truly, so much dawdling.
“Are you going to do it or not? If not, I will!”
Ji Lanci looked at me suspiciously, pausing to think. “Sir, you’re acting very strange. I’m the one with the grudge against him, so why are you in such a hurry?”
“There’s no time to explain. Once I kill him, everything will become clear.”
With that, I raised my sword and plunged it into the Emperor’s chest.
“Reopen the Investiture Register!”
I closed my eyes, awaiting my moment of glory.
“Sir? What’s wrong with you?”
Ji Lanci looked at me with concern. “Sir, did you just lose your mind?”
“Who are you talking to? Are you a demon? Are you a demon?!”
