The Evil Deity's Second Career - Chapter 15
Chapter 15
This isn’t right. Is my method wrong?
I manifested my form. When the Emperor saw another person suddenly appear before him, he was so terrified he nearly fainted again.
I lunged forward and thrust my sword into the Emperor’s body. He squeezed his eyes shut in fear, but he felt no pain.
“I have become an immortal! I have become an immortal!”
“Great One?”
Ji Lanci’s brow furrowed slightly, seemingly perplexed by my recent actions.
“Why can’t I kill him? How am I supposed to open the Investiture Register?”
Ji Lanci looked even more confused. It was as if she suspected she was hallucinating; she even leaned in closer. “Great One, what are you saying?”
“Back during King Wu’s Campaign against Zhou, I followed Jiang Shang and contributed a great deal. Later, all those deities and men who risked their lives for him were placed upon the Investiture Register. Even that tyrant Yin Shou was canonized as the Tianxi Star! Only I was forgotten! I watched as those deities on the Investiture Register enjoyed abundant offerings and incense, while I-only I-was left to linger on in that corner of a dilapidated temple!”
“He said I wasn’t worthy of the Investiture Register. Nonsense!”
I slumped onto the ground, no longer even wanting to pick up my sword.
Ji Lanci looked at the Emperor, who was already too terrified to speak, with a cold, indifferent gaze. She said to me, “Great One, would you mind handing me a dagger?”
Hearing this, hope flared within me once more.
I placed the longsword from the floor into Ji Lanci’s hand.
Ji Lanci: “…”
I said, “Do me a favor while you’re at it. I can’t open the Investiture Register myself, but perhaps I can use your strength.”
“Fine. Great One, just watch!”
The fear had already vanished from the Emperor’s face. “You cannot kill me. I have already joined the ranks of the immortals. I have an immortal body…”
“Talkative.”
Ji Lanci’s hand rose and the blade fell. Accompanied by a miserable shriek, the Emperor’s eyes widened, and he died in bitter resentment.
Outside the city, the sound of galloping hooves beat like the drums of doom; the fate of a generation’s sovereign had reached its end.
Ji Lanci’s great vengeance was settled, and I was about to welcome my sacred moment of glory.
From this day forward, I would no longer be an evil deity. I wondered what title would be bestowed upon me; I was quite looking forward to it.
“Great One, shall we go?”
Ji Lanci’s voice reached my ears, urging me.
I snapped my eyes open. We were still in the Hall of Mental Cultivation. It was still just Ji Lanci and me, and the Emperor lay on the ground, his eyes refusing to close in death.
“Why can’t I open the Investiture Register? This isn’t fair!”
I felt an unprecedented wave of exhaustion.
I had thought that by killing this Emperor, I could reopen the Investiture Register. I never expected it to fail.
“Great One, is that thing very important to you?” Ji Lanci asked softly.
“Of course! I put in the work, so why wasn’t I included?”
“No, let me stab him again.”
Ji Lanci stopped me from trying to give the Emperor another redundant stab. “We have to go, Great One. Although I don’t know what the Investiture Register means to you, I know that if we don’t leave now, I’m afraid we won’t be able to leave at all.”
