The Evil Deity's Second Career - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Someone secretly slipped a letter through the crack in the door.
I looked closely; it was the guard who had taken Ji Lanci’s gold.
“What’s inside?”
Ji Lanci opened the letter, her hands trembling.
“I told you, every bird leaves a trace. As long as something was done, there will be clues.”
The letter contained an address that looked like a pawnshop, along with a handkerchief.
I glanced at the handkerchief. The embroidery was exquisite and the fabric was high quality. Other than that, there was nothing special about it. I was quite perplexed when Ji Lanci clutched it and began to wail.
“It’s just a handkerchief. Why are you crying like this?”
“My sister-in-law embroidered this. I recognize it.”
No wonder.
“What do we do next?”
Ji Lanci gripped the handkerchief tightly in her palm, her gaze shifting.
“Debts must be paid, and a life for a life. These two accounts will be settled together.”
Ji Lanci was crazier than I thought.
She set fire to the Cold Palace. The soaring flames dyed a small patch of the sky over the Imperial City a brilliant red.
Atop the Stargathering Tower, the State Preceptor was observing the celestial omens.
“Your Majesty, look! The southwestern corner is filled with rosy clouds-this is an auspicious sign!”
The Emperor opened his eyes and indeed saw the sky over there glowing a vivid red. He was in high spirits.
“The State Preceptor has done well. Reward him!”
Before the State Preceptor could even offer his thanks, a eunuch rushed in to report that the Cold Palace was on fire.
The Emperor stood up abruptly. “Who is currently residing in the Cold Palace?”
The eunuch knelt. “It… it is Consort Lan.”
A look of grief crossed the Emperor’s face. When the young eunuch asked if he wanted to go see for himself, he shook his head.
“It’s no use. It’s no use.”
Beside him, the State Preceptor was trembling with fear.
“You dare deceive me?”
“Your Majesty, please appease your anger…”
I took Ji Lanci back to my dilapidated little temple.
Shi Jia was shocked to see me bring a woman back.
“Do you know who she is?”
“Who?”
“The Waterloo of my career!”
After all this time, he was still brooding over the fact that he couldn’t connect Ji Lanci’s red string of fate back then.
Ji Lanci couldn’t see Shi Jia, but seeing me constantly talking to thin air, she asked which deity was present.
“Quick, tell her I am the deity in charge of marriage!”
I rolled my eyes at him and said to Ji Lanci, “He’s not a very important deity.”
Shi Jia made a gesture as if to hit me.
“He must be your friend, My Lord.”
She bowed toward where Shi Jia stood and vowed to build fifty temples for him, offering incense and worship daily.
Hearing this, Shi Jia was stunned. He grabbed my hand and said, “Zhu, am I dreaming? Quick, pinch me.”
I leaned into Shi Jia’s ear and whispered, “She’s bragging. Don’t believe her.”
