Chapter 9

Ji Lanci pulled me aside to discuss her grand plan for revenge.

“First, I’ll… then… and after that… finally…”

“Do you think it’s feasible, Great One?”

I picked at my ear, exhausted. I snapped shut the small booklet she had filled with dense notes.

“Too much trouble. I can solve it with one stroke of my blade.”

“Aren’t deities supposed to be revered by the people? Can they really kill?”

Ji Lanci didn’t understand. Back then, a deity had no status; we were merely the sharpest weapons of mankind.

“There are many kinds of deities. I’m the most powerful kind.”

Ji Lanci glanced around the room before her eyes settled back on me. “You don’t look like it.”

If I didn’t show her some real skill, she’d think I was only good for eating.

I snatched the booklet from her hand and saw that it was filled with information she had gathered over the past few days.

This guy?

“Mm-hmm.”

“Pick a way for him to die.”

Ji Lanci shook her head vigorously. “I’m not killing him. If he dies, the trail goes cold.”

Understood. She wanted him alive.

I memorized the name one last time. “Fine. Wait here for my good news.”

I hauled Du Jisheng back to the ruined temple like a helpless chick.

Seeing Du Jisheng’s eyes rolled back in his head, Ji Lanci hurriedly asked what was wrong with him.

“He fainted.”

Hardly surprising. Anyone would faint after being whisked through the sky for no apparent reason.

Ji Lanci splashed a bucket of water on him to wake him up.

As soon as Du Jisheng regained consciousness, the memory of what had just happened hit him. Terrified, he didn’t dare lift his head and kept begging for mercy.

“Immortal, please don’t kill me! Immortal, please don’t kill me! I haven’t done anything wrong!”

“Look up.”

Du Jisheng was trembling with fear, but he shakily raised his head. When he saw Ji Lanci, he flinched and looked down again. Ji Lanci didn’t waste words; she thrust a handkerchief in front of his eyes.

“Do you recognize this?”

Du Jisheng stole a glance, then recoiled as if he’d been stung. “Never seen it, never seen it!”

Liar.

I gave him a kick, and Du Jisheng nearly wet himself in terror.

Ji Lanci threatened him in a sinister tone, “If you don’t speak, the Vengeful Ghost behind you will snap your neck.”

Du Jisheng shuddered, suddenly feeling a chill on the back of his neck.

“I’ll talk! I’ll talk!”

He wept snot and tears, utterly petrified.

“It… it was brought to my shop to be pawned some time ago.”

Ji Lanci’s expression sharpened. “By whom?”

Du Jisheng stammered and hesitated. I placed my hand on his neck and squeezed slightly; his face instantly turned a bruised purple.

“I… I’ll say…”

“Speak!”

“It… it was General Wang. He brought it in.”

“Only this handkerchief?”

“There was… there was also porcelain, ornaments, jade, and the like. I… I kept them all in the shop.”

“Immortal, I’ve told you everything. Can you let me go now?”

Ji Lanci leaned close to his ear. “If you dare leak a word of what happened tonight…”

Du Jisheng shook his head frantically. “I wouldn’t dare. I wouldn’t dare.”

I hauled Du Jisheng back to where I’d found him.

When I saw him scramble up from the ground and reach for a brush and paper to write something, I drew my sword and severed his hand.

“Agh!”

Du Jisheng clutched his stump and let out a single, agonizing wail.

In the next second, I used my sharp longsword to slice through his neck.

Ji Lanci was soft-hearted, but I was different.

In this world, only the dead are truly obedient.
