Shen Yan returned to the waiting area wounded.

Zhu Miaoqing and the others carried Zhu Hezhou back as well.

Western Region Academy sent a physician to treat him. His other injuries could be healed, but the arm that Shen Yan had severed could not be reattached.

When Zhu Miaoqing heard the news, she flew into a rage. She rushed straight at Shen Yan and tried to use the same old trick, raising her hand to slap her hard—

Slap!

With a sharp crack, Shen Yan backhanded Zhu Miaoqing across the face.

Clutching her cheek, Zhu Miaoqing stared at her in disbelief.

“You dare hit this young lady?!”

“What of it?” Shen Yan’s expression was cold. She scoffed. “Did you expect me to stand obediently and let you hit me?”

Gritting her teeth, Zhu Miaoqing threatened, “Now that you’ve dared provoke Wenxin Palace, we will never spare your clan!”

Shen Yan smiled faintly. “I severed ties with my clan long ago. If Wenxin Palace wants to teach the Shen family of Nanxiao Kingdom a lesson, I’d be delighted to see it.”

Severed ties?

Zhu Miaoqing regarded her with uncertainty. She would rather believe Shen Yan had invented the claim to protect her clan from Wenxin Palace than believe Shen Yan had truly severed all ties with them.

“That’s a lie you made up on purpose!”

Shen Yan merely smiled calmly at her disbelief.

The Shen family of Nanxiao Kingdom had nothing to do with her anymore. Only Father Shen and her younger brother Shen Huai still mattered to her, and Father Shen had already gone to the Central Region while Shen Huai had disappeared…

She did not fear Wenxin Palace’s retaliation.

Zhu Miaoqing raised her hand to slap Shen Yan again, only to meet a cold stare.

“Go on. Do you dare?”

Shen Yan’s forceful presence froze Zhu Miaoqing in place. Her hand hung in midair, unable either to lower it or strike.

Everyone was watching the two of them.

At last, Zhu Miaoqing withdrew her hand and glared darkly at Shen Yan. “Just you wait! This young lady will never let you off!”

Shen Yan remained indifferent.

After Zhu Miaoqing left, Jiang Xianyue could not help laughing.

She took Shen Yan’s hand, placed a third-grade pill in her palm, and smiled. “Yanyan, hurry and take this. Your injuries will heal quickly.”

The three markings on the pill told Shen Yan its grade. She looked at Jiang Xianyue in surprise. A few months ago, Jiang Xianyue seemed to have been only a second-grade alchemist. Now she could already refine third-grade pills.

And Jiang Xianyue was only seventeen.

A third-grade alchemist at seventeen—did that not make her an unparalleled genius?

The Zhuge brothers also noticed the pill. They assumed Jiang Xianyue had bought it at an alchemy hall, as she had never revealed that she was an alchemist.

Shen Yan returned the pill to her.

“You’ve already helped me a great deal. Keep the pill. I bought medicine of my own.”

Jiang Xianyue pouted slightly, apparently unhappy.

But Shen Yan’s gaze was resolute, so she could only take it back.

Shen Yan took out one of the second-grade pills she had purchased and swallowed it.

“Thank you,” Zhuge Youlin suddenly said to her.

Shen Yan looked up. “Why?”

Zhuge Youlin narrowed his eyes, bone-deep cold filling his voice. “That Zhu-something-Qing slapped my seventh brother just now!”

Zhuge Weiran quickly interjected, “It was nothing.”

Shen Yan looked at the red finger marks still lingering across his cheek and frowned. She truly had not noticed them before. The moment she returned to the waiting area, Zhu Miaoqing had pestered her.

Shen Yan turned to Zhuge Youlin. “I’m sure you caused it.”

He choked on his words.

She really did know him well.

“No one was to blame,” Zhuge Weiran explained. A faint smile appeared on his handsome face. He had a good temper and usually placed the greater good first. He did not want such trivial matters to implicate Chifeng Kingdom.

His words only made Zhuge Youlin feel worse. He lowered his eyes, darkness gathering in their depths.

Shen Yan suddenly said, “Zhuge Youlin, know where to draw the line.”

Startled, Zhuge Youlin looked up and met her gaze. It was as though she had seen through his thoughts. He bared his teeth in a grin.

“All right.”

Jiang Xianyue stood nearby with a faint smile, her emotions impossible to read.

The combat test continued.

Zhuge Weiran and Jiang Xianyue were not selected until the eighteenth round.

They entered the field together.

Jiang Xianyue looked petite and delicate, but no one dared underestimate her. Her cultivation had already reached the ninth stage of the Mystic-rank realm!

That level alone was enough to overwhelm most of the youths present.

She did not reveal her true strength during the test. She did not even summon a weapon.

Zhuge Weiran’s situation was less favorable.

He was only at the second stage of the Mystic-rank realm, one minor stage below Shen Yan.

Several youths who admired Zhu Miaoqing set their sights on him. They knew what had happened between Zhu Miaoqing and the Zhuge brothers in the waiting area. Hoping to please her, they attacked Zhuge Weiran.

Their cultivation was not much different from his, but fighting several opponents at once put him under immense pressure. They forced him back step after step.

A white-robed youth suddenly narrowed his eyes at Zhuge Weiran’s arm.

An idea occurred to him.

He exchanged glances with his companions, and they all charged at Zhuge Weiran. The others tied him down while the white-robed youth circled behind him. He flicked up his longsword, preparing to slash at Zhuge Weiran’s arm—

Suddenly, a figure flashed into view and caught the blade between two fingers.

“Who is it?!”

The white-robed youth shouted in alarm. When he saw the newcomer, his pupils contracted.

The girl with two braided pigtails smiled at him. She held his longsword effortlessly between two fingers.

The youth tried to pull it free, but it would not budge.

Zhuge Weiran also realized what had happened. Still shaken, he gave Jiang Xianyue a grateful look before continuing to fight the other attackers.

“Let go!” Knowing he was no match for Jiang Xianyue, the white-robed youth could only order her to release his weapon.

Jiang Xianyue asked, “Do you want to pass the combat test?”

“Of course!”

The youth’s face darkened.

Jiang Xianyue smiled sweetly. “Then be good and don’t move.”

He heard the threat in her words. Instinctively, he glanced toward Zhu Miaoqing in the waiting area. She was staring at him with displeasure, and her gaze seemed to contain two words: Useless trash.

His heart sank.

Then he shouted angrily, “Why should I listen to you?”

A powerful aura erupted from his body. He wrenched his sword free and thrust it at Jiang Xianyue.

Without changing expression, she retreated. Just as he relaxed his guard, she moved so quickly that she nearly vanished from sight and kicked him in the wrist.

Clang!

The longsword hit the ground!

Jiang Xianyue flipped in midair, clamped the white-robed youth’s head between her feet, and slammed him viciously into the ground.

Bang!
