“Miss, we must tell the Young Master,” Yinyue said gravely. “Someone is plotting against you. They may even intend to use this chance to… kill you.”

Hongri was just as worried.

“You can’t enter the competition, Miss. You could lose your life! Let’s withdraw.”

Shen Yan remained silent for a moment.

“I did not register myself, but the outcome happens to suit me.”

“Miss…”

The maids’ expressions changed. Both were about to plead with her again when she spoke calmly.

“Return to the Shen estate.”

Hongri and Yinyue could do nothing.

“Yes, Miss.”

The carriage returned to the Shen family and stopped at the main gate.

When the guards outside saw Shen Yan arrive, they exchanged glances. One stepped forward, his voice full of contempt.

“Second Young Miss, today is Eldest Young Miss’s birthday. The Grand Elder says you carry too much ill fortune to enter through the main gate. You must use the side entrance.”

Shen Yan raised her eyes. “The side entrance?”

Her sharp gaze sent a shiver through the guard.

Forcing down his fear, he answered, “Yes.”

“And if I refuse?”

The guard froze.

A mocking smile had begun to form on his face, but it stiffened beneath Shen Yan’s calm, unwavering stare.

His expression turned ugly.

He had expected this useless girl to obey and enter through the side gate. He had not imagined she would resist.

“Those are the Grand Elder’s orders. Second Young Miss should not make things difficult for us.”

Her reply was cool and merciless.

“Hongri. Take him down.”

Hongri paused for only an instant before reacting.

She attacked.

At the third level of the Yellow-rank realm, her cultivation was more than sufficient to subdue a guard at the second level.

“Kneel!”

Bang!

Hongri forced him heavily onto his knees before Shen Yan. The guard howled in pain.

The other guards at the main gate reacted in alarm. Several hurried over.

This time, they drew their swords.

Shen Yan stepped forward and swept them with a cutting stare.

“Do you intend to attack this young miss?”

The guards grew uneasy.

They feared the Young Master behind her. If they truly harmed Shen Yan, Shen Tianhao would never spare them.

Their leader said with difficulty, “Second Young Miss, please do not force our hands. The Grand Elder ordered us not to let you enter through the main gate.”

Shen Yan’s gaze remained cold.

“And if I insist?”

She knew the Grand Elder was doing this deliberately.

Ill fortune?

He merely wanted to intimidate her and protect their precious Shen Xue.

“Move.”

Her voice carried frost and a natural authority that chilled everyone who heard it.

Shen Yan advanced one step at a time.

“Second Young Miss, do not come closer! We really will hurt you!”

The guards were frightened.

Who could have imagined that once Shen Yan regained her senses, she would become this unyielding? She refused to retreat even half a step.

Yinyue followed beside her and rebuked the guards.

“Insolent! If you dare harm Miss, every one of you will die!”

The guards looked at one another.

None dared strike Shen Yan. Instead, they formed a wall of bodies across her path.

Shen Yan suddenly scoffed.

Then her leg snapped upward.

The kick struck the guard directly ahead of her with startling speed and force.

Bang!

He flew backward and crashed to the ground.

“Agh!”

Everyone’s pupils contracted.

Even the passersby watching from nearby stared with their mouths open.

Was this truly the useless Shen Yan?

Hongri and Yinyue attacked as well. Their palms sent several guards flying, clearing a path for their mistress.

Every guard outside the Shen estate rushed over and surrounded Shen Yan.

Her steps abruptly stopped.

She looked up.

The Shen family’s Grand Elder was walking slowly out of the estate.

With the righteous air of a hypocrite, he said, “Shen Yan, you carry ill fortune. It is inauspicious for you to enter through the Shen family’s main gate today. Your fate might clash with Xue’er’s on her birthday.”

He sighed as though burdened by her behavior.

“You cannot be so selfish. Obediently use the side entrance.”

Many citizens of Nanxiao Kingdom had noticed the disturbance and gathered to watch.

After hearing the Grand Elder’s words, they looked at Shen Yan with even greater disgust.

She stood still and stared at him without blinking.

“You say I carry ill fortune. What evidence do you have?”

The Grand Elder frowned.

“You are a good-for-nothing without spiritual power. Naturally, you cannot sense it. Shen Yan, can you not behave for once? You bring nothing but trouble to this family.”

His voice grew harsher.

“I heard you even registered for the Qiutian Sect’s competition in Lingyan Forest. Do you possess no self-awareness at all? You have ruined the Shen family’s reputation!”

Shen Yan smiled.

“In that case, I sever all ties with the Shen family. From this day onward, there will be no connection between us—with the exception of my father, Shen Tianhao, and my younger brother, Shen Huai.”

Shock swept through the crowd.

Even the Grand Elder’s expression changed.

Shen Yan’s eyes were sharp, her tone absolute.

“If the day comes when my name resounds across the world, the Shen family must never claim a connection to me. Even if every one of you kneels three times and kowtows nine times in supplication, do not dream that I will return!”

She raised her voice so all could hear.

“Today, heaven and earth bear witness, and every person present stands as my witness. I will now repay the Shen family for every expense of my food, clothing, shelter, and travel over the past fifteen years.”

Shen Yan passed a storage ring to Yinyue and ordered her to withdraw fifty thousand taels of gold.

Then she had it thrown down before the Shen family’s gate.

Yinyue stared in shock.

Before she could fully understand what was happening, she obeyed Shen Yan’s command instinctively.

In an instant, fifty thousand glittering taels of gold formed a small mountain directly before the main gate.

The crowd stared, speechless.

So much money!

Shen Yan’s voice was cold.

“The Shen family never gave me a single cultivation resource. Fifty thousand taels of gold is more than enough to repay the cost of supporting me for fifteen years.”

The Grand Elder was stunned.

Trembling with anger, he pointed at Shen Yan.

“That money clearly came from—”

“Is it not mine?”

Shen Yan fixed him with a razor-sharp stare.

If he dared deny it, she would expose every filthy thing Shen Xue had done.

The Grand Elder choked off the rest of his sentence.

Then he roared, “Shen Yan, what right do you have to leave the Shen family?”

She scoffed.

“You despise me, yet you refuse to let me go? In the end, was it not the Shen family’s threshold that proved too high to allow me back inside?”

The Grand Elder’s face turned iron-blue.

She was openly mocking his attempt to bar her from the main gate!
