The family head’s shout did not slow Shen Yan in the slightest.

Before the stunned crowd, she drove the Spirit Phoenix Divine Sword toward Shen Xue’s heart.

“No—!”

The cry overlapped the sound of steel entering flesh.

Shen Xue screamed. Her desperate struggle shifted her body enough that the blade missed her heart, but it still pierced her chest.

The Shen family stared in horrified fury.

“Xue’er!”

The Grand Elder moved first. He flashed forward and struck at Shen Yan with one palm.

“You deserve death!”

Powerful palm wind roared toward her.

Shen Yan drew the divine sword one-handed. Cold light and blood scattered together. She kicked Shen Xue in the abdomen, sending her directly into the Grand Elder’s attack.

His expression changed.

“Xue’er!”

It was too late to withdraw.

His palm blasted Shen Xue across the ground. She rolled several times, grievously injured and coughing blood.

The shocked and furious Grand Elder chose to save her first—but someone moved faster.

Shen Yan.

Before he could react, her sword pierced Shen Xue’s abdomen. Blood spread across the woman’s white clothes.

“Shen Yan, you…!”

The Grand Elder rushed forward, but Shen Yan hauled Shen Xue upright and placed the blade against the artery in her neck.

Her gaze was perfectly calm.

“Take one more step and see what happens.”

He stopped, his face dark with rage.

“This old man will count to three. If you do not release Xue’er—”

“Three, two, one. I counted for you.” Shen Yan interrupted with a mocking smile. “Before trying to kill me, shouldn’t you consider Shen Xue’s life? She is in my hands. I decide whether she lives. Now—”

“Back away!”

Her cold command allowed no refusal.

The crowd stared. How had the situation reversed so quickly?

In less than fifteen minutes, Shen Yan defeated Shen Xue and four beasts. Rather than becoming entangled with them, she focused directly on their Summoner.

Subduing Shen Xue was all that mattered.

The Grand Elder’s face blackened. “Don’t push your luck!”

Shen Yan answered by drawing the blade across Shen Xue’s pale neck.

“Aah!” Shen Xue screamed. “D-don’t! Sister Yan’er, I was wrong! I shouldn’t have treated you that way. I’ll be good to you from now on. Please spare me! Your sister truly knows she was wrong!”

The Grand Elder had not expected Shen Yan to act without hesitation. Fury mingled with fear that she might actually kill Xue’er.

“Fine! Don’t hurt her!”

Clapping sounded from inside the estate.

The family head emerged as several guards dragged out two maids whose hair had been shaved away. Their faces were swollen and bruised, with bloody blade marks across them.

Hongri’s eyes instantly reddened.

“Miss!”

Shen Yan’s heart clenched at the sight.

The family head stared at her darkly.

“Release Xue’er, or these two maids die.”

“Grandfather, save me!” Shen Xue sobbed weakly.

Her chest and abdomen were soaked in blood, making her look desperately pitiful.

The sight reminded the family head of someone from his past, twisting his heart.

He would not allow tragedy to repeat itself.

He had failed to protect that woman, but he would protect her daughter.

He looked at Shen Yan like an enemy.

“Release Xue’er!”

Shen Yan remained calm. “Release Hongri and Yinyue first.”

“What right do you have to make demands of me?”

“Shen Xue is in my hands. If I want her dead, she dies.”

The family head choked. After a deep breath, he waved for the guards to conduct the exchange.

Hongri and Yinyue were freed. With reddened eyes, they ran to Shen Yan.

“Miss!”

“Now release her!” the family head demanded.

As Shen Yan appeared ready to let go, the Grand Elder secretly gathered spiritual power for a sneak attack.

What happened next made everyone’s eyes widen in shock.

The moment Shen Xue was pushed away, a phantom phoenix flashed.

Blood sprayed.

A severed head fell to the ground.

Screams erupted.

His body went rigid. Looking down into Shen Xue’s dead, staring eyes, his expression darkened like a gathering storm.

Shen Yan laughed wildly. “Why should I spare her when she never spared me?”

The Grand Elder charged, his face twisted with fury.

“Wuying!”

A gigantic black flood dragon appeared, majestic and oppressive as a mountain. It released its pressure and roared at the Grand Elder.

The terrifying dragon’s roar swept forth with a gale and hurled him into a distant wall.

Boom!

The crowd staggered back. One glance from the black flood dragon seemed to freeze the blood in their veins.

The family head’s expression changed.
