Chapter 1

Driven by necessity, I sent out two thousand resumes in a frenzy.

Finally, just as my wallet was about to run out of ammunition and provisions, I received an invitation to work as a nanny.

The person on the phone said congratulations, I had passed the screening.

They asked me to come in at two that afternoon to discuss the details in person.

The address was in a villa district halfway up the mountain in Uptown.

From the urban village where I lived, I had to transfer buses three times, and the last stretch was a winding mountain road that could only be walked.

I hurried as fast as I could.

When I was led into the study of the villa’s owner, Young Master Ye, there was still a thin sheen of sweat on my forehead from the rush.

Young Master Ye stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of the study.

The sunlight outside was too bright, so all I could make out was his silhouette shimmering in the glare.

Slowly, he stepped out of the light and shadow.

It looked as if he had dressed up carefully.

He wore a perfectly tailored suit.

His hair was swept back, fully revealing a handsome face that seemed gifted by the heavens.

His cheekbones were sharply defined, his nose bridge straight and proud, and his eyes deep-set.

A diamond stud glittered from his right ear.

Its fire flashed so brilliantly it was hard to keep my eyes open.

He had a kind of refined, untouchable beauty.

Young Master Ye leaned back smoothly into the leather chair, crossed one leg over the other, and looked at me.

His elbow rested casually on the armrest, his hands clasped together.

His eyes were dark and bright, and there was a smile in his brows.

“You finally came?”

Young Master Ye was this approachable?

Terrified and flattered, I said, “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting. Next time, I’ll try to arrive fifteen minutes early.”

“Aren’t you pretty familiar with the area?”

“I wouldn’t dare disturb you without good reason.”

“Why did you only think to come find me now?”

“Coincidence. Pure coincidence. I saw that you were hiring a nanny.”

“Oh. So you even found yourself an excuse. A roundabout way to save the country?”

“I wouldn’t dare claim that. Truly, I wouldn’t.”

“Do you know how long I’ve been looking for you?”

“From sending in my resume to the interview, about a month in total.”

“Why are you dressed like this?”

“Do I need to wear a uniform? I’m sorry. I’ll be sure to pay attention next time.”

…

We talked at cross purposes for quite a while.

Then we stared at each other.

Young Master Ye’s brows slowly drew together.

The smile on his face faded, and his mouth flattened into a line.

“What do you mean?”

It was abrupt when the young master had been pleasant, and abrupt when he showed displeasure.

I was utterly confused and had no idea what I had said wrong.

Without caring about the reason, I immediately threw myself into an apology.

“This is my first time working as a full-time nanny. If I’ve done anything poorly or offended you in any way, please be generous with me, Young Master Ye.”

I didn’t know if it was my imagination.

But every time I called him “Young Master Ye,” his expression darkened another shade.

He trembled with anger.

“Good. Very good, Jian’an! You-”

He called my name, then stopped speaking. I answered and tilted my head, waiting to hear the rest.

“You’re pretending not to know me?”

I said awkwardly, “I wouldn’t say I know you. Young Master Ye is famous, and I’ve seen you on mall screens and magazine covers.”

His expression shifted between disbelief, shock, suspicion, and anger.

He looked me up and down again, then snapped, “Your resume. Take it out and let me see it.”

I hurriedly dug my resume out of a canvas tote printed with the red logo of a supermarket chain.

“You didn’t write any of your past experience… You’re brushing this off that casually?”

I braced myself and explained, “Um… I lost my memory once. I’ve forgotten a lot of things.”

Young Master Ye’s fingers, resting on the leather chair’s armrest, slowly curled inward.

His knuckles pressed white.

Young Master Ye didn’t speak, and I didn’t dare speak either.

As the seconds ticked by, the air in the room grew stifling and heavy.

“Oh. You lost your memory.”

Young Master Ye forced out a cool voice through clenched teeth.

“You don’t remember anything? People, objects, events?”

He emphasized the word “people.”

I shook my head.

“Heh. You forgot everything…”

I glanced at Young Master Ye and saw that his face was deathly pale, his lips pressed tight.

His expression was half-smiling, half-furious, as if his soul had left him.

By the time he straightened, he was already at the peak of rage.

He stepped toward me, only to stumble.

He nearly fell, and only by grabbing the edge of the desk did he barely manage to steady himself.

The fist he had kept clenched opened.

Beads of blood immediately seeped from the crescent-shaped grooves in his palm.

At first, they tentatively clung to his fingertips. Then they joined into lines and fell.

Dark marks instantly stained the gray camel-hair carpet.

I jumped to my feet in a panic, knocking over my chair as I did.

“Young Master Ye, you’re bleeding!”

I hurried to go outside the study and call someone.

But when he saw me turn to leave, he seized me.

A bloodstained grip mark was left on my wrist.

“Where else are you going? You’re not allowed to leave!”

His voice was almost shrill.

His palm was wet, with both blood and sweat.

His eyes were slightly widened, revealing a fragile look like a startled bird.

Young Master Ye was beautiful.

But beauty could not hide his sudden madness.

I felt a little afraid.

When he met my terrified gaze, he shuddered as if waking from a dream.

His awareness returned. His chest rose and fell several times before a hint of clarity came back to him.

Slowly, he released me and called toward the door expressionlessly.

“Uncle Liu-”

The butler, Uncle Liu, entered at once.

Seeing Young Master Ye bleeding, he was slightly startled.

He stepped out, then returned with several respectful-looking people to treat the young master’s wound.

Everything was orderly, as if scenes like this happened often.

Young Master Ye leaned back in the chair, his eyes half-lidded.

His dark eyes were hidden beneath thick, fine lashes.

His face was pale, with only a faint red left on his lips.

He had the air of a wandering male ghost with nowhere to return.

Uncle Liu advised the young master softly, “Why rush things all at once?”

I didn’t hear clearly.

Uncle Liu turned back and invited me to rest in the living room for a while.

Young Master Ye lifted his eyelids and glanced at me. This time, he didn’t stop me. He only said, “Ye Zhenchuan.”

“…Young master?”

“My name. Is that so hard to understand? Stop calling me Young Master Ye. It annoys me. My name is Ye Zhenchuan.”
