Chapter 2

I sat on the living room sofa, completely at a loss.

The vise-like grip Ye Zhenchuan had left on my wrist still seemed to linger.

His outburst had come too suddenly, without the slightest warning.

And it had carried a self-destructive edge.

My instincts told me something was wrong. Slinging my canvas bag over my shoulder, I said goodbye to Uncle Liu.

“I’m sorry. I may not be qualified for-”

Uncle Liu cut me off with an apologetic expression.

“Miss Jian, I’m truly sorry. Please allow me to clean the stains on your wrist first.”

He gently wiped away the blood with a warm towel, revealing the faint bruises underneath.

Uncle Liu looked even more apologetic. He immediately transferred five thousand yuan to me.

“I’m sorry. Our young master’s mental state is not very stable, and he has offended you terribly. This is compensation for your medical expenses.”

Then he transferred another five thousand.

“As you know, the Ye Family is wealthy and influential. Countless people are watching us like hawks, waiting for a chance to probe our weaknesses. If any unfavorable news about the young master gets out… we would appreciate it if you could keep this confidential.”

Finally, he transferred ten thousand more.

“You must have been frightened. This is compensation for emotional distress. As for the young master, we’ll have to trouble you to take good care of him from now on. We are willing to double your hourly wage.”

The sound of money dropping kept ringing from my Alipay account.

Uncle Liu tilted his head.

“What were you saying to me just now? I was too anxious to tend to your wrist and didn’t hear clearly.”

I swallowed back my resignation, stood ramrod straight with my hands pressed to my sides, and said, “I understand the young master has his difficulties. I will absolutely keep my mouth shut.”

“What I meant was, I would be very happy to take this job. I hope I can satisfy Young Master Ye!”

Uncle Liu patted me on the shoulder and saw me to the door.

“The contract will be signed at the beginning of next month. You are welcome to move in early at any time to get used to the environment.”

…

I walked out. The Ye Family was rich and powerful, and their villa was just as grand.

In the front courtyard, an ornate fountain stood at the center, with a circular red-brick driveway built around the main gate.

The driveway was flat and solid. Dense shrubs and tall camphor trees grew along its sides.

I walked through the shade beneath the trees and had just stepped out of the courtyard gates when a silver Cullinan drove past me by several dozen meters.

It stopped, then reversed back.

The window rolled down, revealing Ye Zhenchuan’s striking side profile.

He lifted the sunglasses perched on his nose with his left hand.

“Where are you going? I’ll give you a ride.”

How could I dare ride in my boss’s car?

I honestly waved my hands and refused.

“No need. That would trouble you too much. I’ll just take the bus.”

Ye Zhenchuan seemed not to hear me.

Leaning across the passenger seat, he pushed the door open, his tone leaving no room for argument.

“Get in. There are cameras here. Parking isn’t allowed.”

I had no choice but to get into the car. Ye Zhenchuan asked for my address.

“No. 13 Courtyard, Fangshili South Road.”

“What’s that neighborhood like? Security, convenience.”

“It can’t really be called a neighborhood.”

I said softly, “It’s just a few old corridor-style apartment blocks that got enclosed together and given a name for easier management.”

As I spoke, I took out my phone and messaged Uncle Liu.

“I just ran into Young Master Ye on the road. He said he wants to give me a ride.”

Uncle Liu immediately replied with a thumbs-up.

My fingers flew over the keyboard.

“Uncle Liu, the young master won’t suddenly have an episode, will he? Is there a pattern to his episodes? How many times a day? What do I do if he has one? Is this really safe? What should I do?”

Uncle Liu replied with a sweating emoji.

“The young master is not mentally ill. He simply becomes emotionally extreme at times. Miss Jian, you can rest assured.”

“If something unexpected truly happens, just give him a bit of stimulation.”

Stimulation?

What kind of stimulation?

Uncle Liu replied, “Whether it’s gentle or intense, as long as it can divert the young master’s attention, that will do.”

I didn’t reply again.

Because Ye Zhenchuan was impatiently tapping the steering wheel with his fingers. He clicked his tongue.

“Why aren’t you talking? Do you really have that little to say to me?”

I hurriedly turned off my phone screen and sat up straight.

What was I supposed to say?

That I was discussing care methods for a mentally fragile young master with Uncle Liu?

That didn’t seem very appropriate.

After careful consideration, I decided to talk about the most basic, least error-prone topic.

The weather.

I had just opened my mouth and said, “Uh,” when he interrupted me again.

“Don’t talk to me. I don’t want to hear it.”

No, seriously, why was this young master so hard to please?

The young master sneered.

“What, do you think I’m awful? Hard to please?”

Had I said that out loud?

I quickly pledged my loyalty to my current moneybag.

“How could I? Master Zhenchuan is so considerate. You even went out of your way to give me a ride. I remember all your kindness in my heart!”

He glanced sideways at me.

“You’d better.”

I didn’t dare play with my phone.

Nor did I dare sit too close to Ye Zhenchuan.

I pressed myself against the passenger door and stared blankly out the window.

Ye Zhenchuan suddenly rolled down the window.

The sky was heavy with dark clouds, and a gust of damp wind instantly rushed into the car.

It caught me completely off guard.

I could only lean toward Ye Zhenchuan.

Only then did I realize I hadn’t had the chance to look at what he was wearing today.

A smoky-gray suit.

So plain.

It would look best with a dark green velvet tie.

And gold cufflinks set with emeralds.

Only then could his air of wealth and nobility be properly grounded.

Wait.

Why did I feel so inexplicably familiar with Ye Zhenchuan…?
