Chapter 3

The farther we drove from the upper city into the lower city, the narrower the roads became.

The pavement turned uneven and pitted.

The buildings along the street became mottled red-brick houses.

Clotheslines tangled around balcony railings.

Faded long johns and plastic bags fluttered in the wind.

We passed a roadside barbecue stand.

The owner wore a little white cap and was grilling lamb skewers.

We happened to be waiting at a red light.

Smoke from the skewers, mixed with the scent of coarse salt and the grassy aroma of red willow skewers, drifted in through the car window.

My salivary glands took a vicious sting.

My back molars ached with want.

Without realizing it, I stared blankly at the glossy meat skewers on the iron rack.

It had been so long since I’d eaten any.

But one lamb skewer cost ten yuan.

So expensive.

The light turned green.

Ye Zhenchuan drove through the intersection, made a clean U-turn, and pulled back up in front of the barbecue stand.

He got out of the car. Before long, he returned carrying a bag of barbecue.

The lamb skewers poked out of the bag, and the oyster shells were still bubbling away inside the foil.

Grilled chicken wing roots and grilled eggplant were pinned together with bamboo chopsticks.

There were also two steaming hot baked buns.

It smelled so good.

I swallowed loudly and repeatedly, cradling the barbecue as I looked at him with pleading eyes.

Ye Zhenchuan issued an order:

“Eat.”

“It’ll drop in the car…”

His brows pressed even lower.

“If you’re hungry, eat.”

Carefully, I fished out one of the baked buns and offered it up to him.

“This one’s really authentic and smells amazing. You should try it…”

Ye Zhenchuan seemed to have never taken anything with his hands.

The résumé was like that.

So was the baked bun.

“Hey… it’s hot!”

Before I could warn him, he leaned straight over and took a bite from my hand.

The next second, the heat made his whole body jolt.

“Spit it out!”

I held my hand beneath his lips to catch it.

He frowned and glanced at me, then endured it.

He only kept sucking in air, his tongue pushing the baked bun around his mouth.

His thin face bulged out in little bumps again and again.

I kind of wanted to laugh, but I didn’t dare.

All I could do was hand him the bottle of mineral water beside me.

“Hurry, drink something cold.”

Only after I handed it over did I realize I’d already drunk from that bottle.

By the time I wanted to take it back, it was too late.

Ye Zhenchuan was refined, but quick.

He drank the rest of the water in one go.

He acted perfectly justified. As he spoke, the rosy tip of his tongue appeared and disappeared between his lips.

He glanced sideways at me, all languid charm.

“I can’t even drink a little of your water?”

For the rest of the ride, I kept sneaking glances at Ye Zhenchuan.

The more I looked, the more I felt his brows were like strokes of ink and his complexion like spring blossoms.

Although I knew he had a terrible temper, was spoiled, and was a little unhinged,

I still couldn’t help feeling an urge to cherish such beauty.

The car soon arrived downstairs from my place.

It parked beside the haphazard pile of bicycles and little electric scooters outside the corridor-style apartment block.

I got out, thanked Ye Zhenchuan again, then turned to leave.

Ye Zhenchuan pushed open the car door.

“Aren’t you going to invite me up for a bit?”

“Young Master Ye, there’s someone at my place. Today might not be very convenient.”

Ye Zhenchuan’s face immediately darkened.

“Who?”

I didn’t often talk about my private affairs in front of others, so I felt a little shy.

“My boyfriend.”

I pointed upstairs.

Behind the white gauze curtain on the sixth floor, the warm yellow light looked hazy and soft.

A tall, straight figure was passing by the window.

Ye Zhenchuan stared at the window, stunned for a long time.

Then a sudden clap of thunder cracked across the sky. I looked toward the sound and saw heavy black clouds rolling in.

“Young Master Ye, it’s about to rain. You should hurry back.”

Ye Zhenchuan didn’t move.

On his face, I actually sensed a trace of the terror of dark clouds pressing down on a city about to collapse.

His eyes were red, but his face was utterly expressionless. At least he didn’t do anything uncontrollable like he had that afternoon.

He waved me off.

“Go on up. I’ll have a cigarette before I leave.”

I had just stepped inside when Qin Yu, wearing an apron, smiled and took my canvas bag from me.

“You’re back? Dinner’s almost ready.”

Outside, a violent storm quickly came crashing down.

Bean-sized raindrops battered the glass with sharp pattering sounds, and the wind swept threads of rain against the window frame, dragging out slanted trails of water.

A shrill scream rang out from outside.

It came with a whole chorus of little electric scooters blaring their alarms.

Curious, I poked my head out.

“What happened out there?”

Qin Yu paid it no mind.

“Probably just the wind howling.”
