Chapter 1

To help me find my missing hen, Li Xianyun split an entire mountain in half.

That alarmed the immortal sects, and they came looking for him.

The immortals knelt before my husband, weeping as they poured out their hearts.

Only then did I learn that the husband I had picked up was the peerless prodigy who had sealed away the Demon Lord.

He had gone missing in the great battle three years ago and ended up sharing my bed.

The Immortal Venerable, once as pure and untouchable as a clear breeze beneath a bright moon, had fallen into the mortal world.

From then on, he spent every day feeding chickens and ducks, delivering piglets, and coveting the warmth of our quilt.

After Li Xianyun swallowed the spirit medicine that would restore his memories, he slowly opened his eyes. In an instant, his gaze turned clear and sharp. He apologized to me.

“I’m sorry, Miss Chen. I must go back to save all living beings under heaven.”

I asked with concern,

“That’s fine. The autumn harvest is coming up. If you have time, can you come back and help me cut the wheat?”

I couldn’t finish all the work by myself.

In the past, Li Xianyun alone could do the work of every strong young man in our village combined.

Every year, he came first in wheat cutting and won me a whole flock of hens.

With him around, I never had to worry about my harvest.

But when the others heard me, they all covered their mouths and laughed.

A woman in white reddened at the eyes, knelt in front of me, and begged,

“Miss Chen, Venerable Li has already wasted three years here with you. The people are suffering, the world is in hardship. How can you be so selfish as to keep him all to yourself?”

“You only care about yourself and ignore the world. Is this how your family raised you?”

But I was an orphan.

Besides, Li Xianyun worked very fast.

He could finish harvesting the wheat in less than a minute.

Was he the only one in the world capable of saving all living beings?

Were all these immortals here useless?

I was very curious, but I didn’t ask out loud.

Because everyone was staring at me as if they were looking at some unreasonable shrew.

“Ordinary people are like this. Their hearts are filled with nothing but romance.”

“She just wants to keep the Immortal Venerable to herself!”

“If not for the Demon Lord, how could she ever have been allowed to defile Venerable Li?”

I looked at Li Xianyun. Just last night, he had still been coaxing me at the head of our bed.

“Kiss me one more time, and I’ll chop extra firewood tomorrow, all right?”

Today, however, Li Xianyun merely lifted his eyelids and took out a divorce agreement.

“Miss Chen, please sign this. I can compensate you.”

The other immortals were displeased.

“Venerable Li, she is merely an ordinary person. Having received your grace, she can already live a longer life. That is an enormous blessing for her!”

“She should be kowtowing and thanking you. And you still want to compensate her?”

Before I could overturn their tea, Li Xianyun sighed and raised a hand, silencing the protests.

I thought he was going to explain the debt he owed me.

For example, how I had saved him from the jaws of wild dogs, losing a strip of skin from my arm and leaving a scar that remains to this day.

How I had fallen and broken my arm while searching for medicinal herbs to treat his wounds.

How I had rushed back through the pouring rain that night to brew his medicine.

Back then, Li Xianyun’s eyes had been wet as he held my hand and promised that we would grow old together, never to part.

But now, Li Xianyun looked down at me from above, pity in his eyes.

“It doesn’t matter that I wasted three years. But a human life lasts only a hundred years. To Miss Chen, these three years were precious. I should compensate her.”

My ears rang.

To him, these three years had been a waste?
