Jiang Tingche opened the door and fixed his long, handsome eyes on me. “No. What’s wrong?”

In a tentative tone, I said, “I’ve rented a room from you for exactly a year now. I’m thinking of moving out. Would that be all right?”

He paused. “Moving out? Where will you go?”

I invented an excuse. “I’m seeing someone. We’re going to live together.”

After a moment’s silence, he asked, “Have you discussed it with your boyfriend?”

The lie came easily. “Not yet. I was about to.”

His lips curved. “Fine.”

The next morning, Jiang Tingche left for work. I had deliberately taken the morning off.
