Chapter 8

That night, Ji Qingyan was taken.

It was Lin Xizhe’s doing.

The note he left behind was simple.

“If you want to save her, come to the B1 Level.”

Jiang Yichuan crumpled the note in a fit of rage.

“I should have killed him earlier.”

“This is exactly what he’s been waiting for,” I said.

Li Shuheng stood by the window, not turning around.

“The Main Control will be active on the B1 Level.”

“You can’t go.”

“Why?”

“Because as soon as you get close to the Main Control, it will prioritize verifying your old permissions.”

“Then that’s perfect.”

I walked up behind him.

“I want it to recognize me.”

Li Shuheng whipped around to face me.

“Luo Tinglan.”

“Don’t use my name to try and intimidate me.”

“I’m not trying to intimidate you.”

“I’m telling you that you can’t just waltz into the Main Control whenever you feel like it.”

“I’ve been in there before.”

“And you nearly died in there back then.”

I looked at him and asked softly, “And what about you?”

“Didn’t you almost die in there too?”

He fell silent instantly.

I reached out and gently took hold of his sleeve.

“Li Shuheng.”

“It’s different this time.”

“How is it different?”

“This time, you’re on my side.”

His eyes flickered with a slight tremor.

I knew what he feared most wasn’t death.

It was me standing on the opposite side of him.

I took a step forward, closing the distance between us.

“Haven’t you always wanted to know?”

“Whether I would still choose you after I regained my memories.”

His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly.

“And?”

“And now I’m telling you.”

“I choose you.”

The moment the words left my mouth, my heart suddenly felt steady.

It wasn’t an impulse.

Nor was it a moment of softness forced out by him.

I had truly figured it out.

Back then, I killed him to prevent him from becoming the System’s blade.

Now, I wanted to save him for the same reason.

Li Shuheng stared at me, silent for a long time.

Finally, he asked in a low voice.

“Do you have any idea what those words mean to me?”

“I do.”

“If you regret them now, I’ll lose my mind.”

“Then hold it together.”

My voice was very soft.

“Let’s save her first.”

He suddenly reached out and pulled me into his arms.

His grip was heavy.

So heavy it felt like he wanted to press me into his very bones.

My ears were filled with the sound of his ragged breathing.

“Luo Tinglan.”

“Mm.”

“You’d better not be lying to me.”

“I’m not lying this time.”

He held me for a few seconds before slowly letting go.

The redness at the corners of his eyes had deepened.

“Let’s go.”

“I’ll go with you to the B1 Level.”
