Chapter 3

The company organized a team-building dinner, scheduled for Friday evening.

I had wanted to make an excuse not to go, but the admin lady said: “President Su specifically emphasized that no one should be missing, especially new employees should participate more in group activities to build camaraderie.”

So here I was, burying my head in meat.

Vice President Pei Lan was naturally friendly and used a slotted spoon to fish out some meatballs for me: “An Xun, try these, cilantro beef meatballs, their signature dish.”

Sitting across from me, Su Yanli, who had been cold-faced the whole time, suddenly spoke in a stiff voice: “He doesn’t eat carrots, doesn’t eat beef, doesn’t eat eggplant, doesn’t eat fish. With tomato scrambled eggs, he only eats the eggs; with dumplings, he only eats the skin, but it has to have the taste of meat. He doesn’t eat raw scallions, and he hates cilant-”

Before the “tro” could come out, I had already stuffed a meatball into my mouth, chewed a couple of times, and swallowed.

My colleagues were stunned, their eyes wide as they looked from me to Su Yanli, finally revealing meaningful expressions.

Several young girls smiled brightly, uniformly took out their phones, and their fingers tapped on the keyboards in a blur.

Facing Su Yanli’s blank expression, I scratched my head, a bit embarrassed: “I can eat all that now.”

I used to be a picky eater, like a spoiled young master.

In those years abroad, I suffered a lot, so there’s nothing I can’t eat anymore.

The way Su Yanli looked at me became very strange, as if someone had grabbed his throat, a glimmer of moisture flashing in his eyes.

Pei Lan had a low alcohol tolerance, and after a few cups, he became even more enthusiastic: “An Xun, let me tell you, you’re really good-looking, prettier than those celebrities on TV! Here, let me give you another meatball!”

For some reason, I felt a chill down my back again.

Pei Lan also shivered and looked around blankly: “Huh? Is the air conditioning set too high? Why did it suddenly get so cold?”

Then Su Yanli grabbed him by the back of his collar and unceremoniously tossed him to the next table: “Pei Lan, you’ve had too much to drink. It’s cooler over there; go sober up.”

Pei Lan: “…Oh.”

Then silently, he slid into the empty seat next to me.

He sat very close, his arm pressing against mine.

Through gritted teeth, he said: “You’re young, don’t be deceived by sweet talk from some shady character.”

He also advised earnestly: “You can’t judge a book by its cover; compared to someone who knows you inside and out like me, that kind of person is no match.”

I had drunk a few too many, and my face felt a bit warm.

With a thick tongue, I asked in confusion: “Eh? Isn’t President Pei your buddy? You guys even started a business together, so how is he shady?”

His expression grew even more serious, and he nodded gravely: “Honestly, he’s deep and scheming; I can’t see through him.”

I stole a glance at Pei Lan, who was at the next table, laughing like a naïve, innocent fool.

Deep and scheming?

The alcohol went to my head, and I leaned my face close to Su Yanli’s.

Pointing at my own face, I asked: “So do you think I’m good-looking?”

Su Yanli hadn’t been drinking, but his face turned bright red.

His eyes darted around, and he stammered: “Go… good-looking, especially good-looking.”

I smirked smugly and pressed the advantage: “Then you’d sweet-talk me too, so you’re not a good person either.”

Su Yanli got anxious and retorted with blatant double standards: “I’m different from others.”
