After all my luggage was packed, Zhao Duo and I sat ramrod straight beside each other on the sofa.

My mom narrowed her eyes at us. “So what your family is saying is that my son’s marriage partner has changed to you? And we’ll still get the engagement gift as promised?”

“Auntie, at the moment, this is only my decision. I haven’t discussed it with my family yet, but I don’t think it’ll be a problem.”

My mom took a sip of tea. “Those parents of yours really are snobs. They’re businesspeople themselves, yet they’ve always looked down on our family for being in business. I heard Major General Li’s Omega took a liking to your younger brother, so your family suddenly decided my son wasn’t good enough for him.”

“I won’t deny it. They are terribly shortsighted.”

That caught my mom’s interest. She smiled. “Oh? Shortsighted?”

“Yes. Xiao Yang may be a Beta, but he’s an exceptional learner and extremely intelligent. As long as he’s given the right training, his future will be limitless. Forget major general—Xiao Yang might rise even higher than that someday.”

My mom clutched the cup in excitement. “You really think so?”

Zhao Duo nodded. “Of course. If anything, marrying Xiao Yang would be me reaching above my station.”

“You’re the only normal person in your whole family. When Xiao Yang’s grandfather arranged his engagement, Xiao Yang was only two and your family still hadn’t found you. That’s why he was betrothed to Zhao Ze. Otherwise, it should have been you two from the start.”

Zhao Duo picked up the thread with a smile. “Heaven has finally opened its eyes and set things right. In the end, Xiao Yang and I are the ones who will be together.”

I viciously pinched the soft flesh at his waist.

What nonsense was he spouting?

I was only doing this for the pharmaceutical factory.

Money. Money! Did he understand?

Smiling, Zhao Duo closed his hand around my troublemaking one, pulled it behind my back, and held it there.

My mom was extremely pleased with Zhao Duo.

She smiled as she saw us onto the aircraft.

“Come home and visit whenever you have time.”

I was speechless. “Mom, I’m not married yet. I’m only leaving for school.”

Zhao Duo gave me the largest bedroom in his house.

He also discussed marrying me with his family.

The parents I had tried and utterly failed to contact were quite satisfied with the outcome.

They would give me the pharmaceutical factory, but there was a condition.

Zhao Duo had to sever ties with his family. He would be barred from inheriting the family company, and everything would go to Zhao Ze.

I was shocked. “Just how badly do they treat you in that family? Your parents play favorites far too much.”

I had visited their home often when I was little, just after Zhao Duo was found and brought back.

Later, I devoted myself to my studies and stopped going over as much. I had no idea he was so unloved at home.

“You’re an S-class Alpha now, and already a colonel. The Military Department values you too. Even that isn’t good enough for them?”

Zhao Duo smiled. “They don’t pay any attention to me. They don’t even know I became an S-class Alpha. They probably still think I’m only A-class.”

“I’ve never told them anything about my work at the Military Department either. They have no connections there, so naturally they know nothing about me. They probably think I’m still some low-ranking soldier.”

“And I’ve never disclosed my family background, so no one else knows I have any connection to the Zhao family. As far as they’re concerned, I’m simply an intruder who ruined their family. I couldn’t tell you how many times my stepmother has asked why I didn’t die out there instead of coming back to steal her son’s things.”

Anger rushed straight to my head, turning my whole face red.

Overcome with sympathy, I squeezed his hand hard. “Don’t worry. From now on, I’ll be your sugar daddy. I’ll always have your back. If they won’t treat you well, I will. Whatever you want, I’ll get it for you!”

Zhao Duo looked a little touched. “You’re such a good person. You really can give me anything I want?”

I nodded emphatically. “Anything!”

He squeezed my hand in return. “I knew you were a good person.”

The corner of my mouth lifted. “Of course I am.”

Three days before I was due to report to the academy, Zhao Duo suddenly went into rut.

That morning, I woke up and waited for him to come tell me it was time to get up and eat.

Ten minutes passed, and he still didn’t appear.

My stomach empty, I went downstairs in a huff.

Then I discovered he hadn’t even made breakfast.

He knew my only weakness was my appetite. He made delicious food for me every day without being asked. What was wrong with him this morning?

I saw that his shoes were still on the rack by the door. I turned, took a running start, and kicked his bedroom door open.
