The Self-Cultivation of the Divine Lord - Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Today marks the tenth year of my descent to the mortal realm to undergo trials.
It is also the day I return to the Heavenly Court.
My handsome mortal husband, Rong Xu, is still fast asleep.
The marks scattered across his inner robes are proof enough of how intense last night’s “battle” was.
As I stroke his handsome face, my eyes are filled with reluctance.
Rong Xu and I met at a wonton stall.
Back then, I had just descended for my trials and had a particular craving for that dish.
It was a cold winter day, and there was only one bowl of wontons left.
Our eyes met, sparks flying between us.
In the end, we reached an agreement and shared the bowl.
The stall owner smiled as he took the copper coins Rong Xu handed over, teasing us with a wicked grin. “You two actually have quite the ‘husband and wife’ look about you.”
I just scoffed.
Little did I know, the owner’s words would turn out to be prophetic. Rong Xu and I really did end up getting married, living a life of unabashed bliss.
Only yesterday, I promised him a lifetime together, and now I’m about to become a “bad woman.”
A faint glow began to emanate from my body-the signal from the Heavenly Official urging me back.
Sigh. No matter how much Rong Xu and I love each other, for an immortal like me, these days are nothing more than a fleeting illusion.
A beautiful dream must eventually end.
There is a divide between immortals and mortals; I must return to the heavens after all.
I cast an Oblivion Spell on him and erased all traces of my existence from our surroundings.
As my scent slowly dissipated, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my heart.
Having finished everything, I leaned down and gave Rong Xu a gentle kiss. When I looked up again, my eyes were brimming with tears.
“Goodbye, my love.”
“Next time I descend for trials, I’m booking you again.”
Wisps of white smoke rose as my figure gradually vanished from the room, as if I had never been there at all.
Outside the window, the spring rain pattered softly.
After an unknown amount of time, the eyelashes of the man sleeping soundly on the bed fluttered slightly.
Chapter 2
By the time I returned to the heavens, Ling Wei had been waiting for me for a long while.
Ling Wei is a Rabbit Immortal and the first fairy I met after my ascension. She ascended a hundred years before me, but we were birds of a feather and quickly became close friends.
“Yo! Your first trial, and you’re back in just ten days?”
A day in heaven is a year in the mortal realm.
This journey wasn’t particularly long, but it wasn’t short either, and it left an indelible mark on my heart.
“That’s right. I’ve met my KPI.”
“But why do you look so heartbroken?”
I propped my chin in my hand, reminiscing about everything in the mortal world.
“Sigh, don’t even ask. My Star of Romance has been stirred.”
Ling Wei’s face immediately filled with gossip. “Huh? You fell for a mortal?”
I nodded honestly.
I truly liked Rong Xu. His looks, his body, his personality-I liked everything about him.
But since ancient times, love between immortals and mortals has gone against the Heavenly Dao. For Rong Xu and me, forgetting each other and moving on was the best outcome.
Yet, the thought of another woman sleeping beside him made my heart ache so fiercely I could hardly breathe.
Ten years of time, real emotions.
No one could just let go of that easily.
“Alas, loving the right person at the wrong time,” Ling Wei lamented.
She was right. In the end, Rong Xu and I were destined to meet but not to stay together.
Ling Wei nudged me with her elbow, acting mysterious.
“Do you know about Divine Lord Rong Yan? They say he also went down to the mortal realm for trials. The other fairies said his trial ended a long time ago, but for some reason, he delayed his return until today.”
Divine Lord Rong Yan?
I haven’t been in the Immortal Realm for long, so I know very little about this Divine Lord.
However, I’ve heard from other fairies that Divine Lord Rong Yan was the very first god since the creation of the world.
Supposedly, he is incredibly elegant and peerlessly handsome. He keeps to himself in his palace, and very few have ever seen his true face. Those who have were left with hearts fluttering, desperate to see him just once more.
There’s a saying in the Immortal Realm: “No one sees Divine Lord Rong Yan only once; there are only those who have never seen him at all.”
Ling Wei gave a mischievous grin. “Divine Lord Rong Yan is heading out today. Want to go catch a glimpse of his true face?”
There was such a good opportunity?
“Let’s go!”
“He’s over at Immortal Lord Mo Ze’s estate!”
My forward step immediately took a sharp turn.
“I just remembered I have something to do today. I won’t go.”
“Hey, hey, hey!” Ling Wei blocked my path. “Are you still afraid of seeing Immortal Lord Mo Ze?”
I hesitated, my words catching in my throat. After a long pause, I whispered, “It’s not exactly that…”
Before I could react, Ling Wei grabbed my arm.
“Then let’s go! Only a handsome face can wash away the sorrow of losing a man!”
“Whatever happens, I’ll face it with you!”
You’d better.
