The Self-Cultivation of the Divine Lord - Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Ling Wei brought me to Mo Ze’s Immortal Mansion… specifically, to the top of its outer wall.
I looked at her with a face full of concern. “Is this really okay?”
Ling Wei lay flat against the wall, her sharp gaze scanning the surroundings.
“I have my reasons… Ah! The Divine Lord is coming out!”
Her eyes lit up. I followed her line of sight and looked into the distance.
Mo Ze was strolling through a garden corridor with another man, chatting and laughing.
Divine Lord Rong Yan wore a veil, obscuring his face. I could only see that he was tall and slender, possessing a cold and detached bearing.
I asked in confusion, “Why is he wearing a veil?”
Ling Wei thought about it for a long time before coming up with a reason. “Perhaps he’s afraid his looks will cause a riot!”
A second later, a crowd of fairies suddenly surged beneath the corner where we were perched. They crowded around the carved windows, screaming Divine Lord Rong Yan’s name like obsessed fans.
Ling Wei wore a look that said ‘exactly as I predicted.’
“See? It’s a good thing I had the foresight to come here. If we tried to fight them for a spot down there, we definitely wouldn’t win.”
I gave her a thumbs-up.
The fairies below were fighting tooth and nail for the best viewing angle, spells flying everywhere. Yet, they refused to lower themselves to crawl onto a wall with us.
By the end of it, these fairies-who had started with exquisite hair and makeup-looked absolutely disheveled.
Ling Wei and I exchanged a look, shaking our heads and sighing in unison.
Suddenly, a stray spell hit me. I lost my balance and tumbled uncontrollably toward the inside of the wall, landing flat on my face with a heavy thud.
The commotion finally drew the attention of Divine Lord Rong Yan and Immortal Lord Mo Ze.
I winced and bared my teeth in pain, clutching my injured head. Just as I was about to look up, a pleasant voice reached my ears.
“Are you alright?”
It was Divine Lord Rong Yan.
Though he wore a veil, the corners of his eyes were slightly upturned, possessing a soul-stirring quality.
The fairies outside fell silent.
Divine Lord Rong Yan reached out a hand toward me.
His fingers were long and elegant, with well-defined knuckles.
As I stared, they felt strangely familiar.
They reminded me of my mortal husband’s hands. His were just as beautiful and very dexterous, often making one’s eyes grow hot with emotion.
“Fairy Yun Mu?”
Mo Ze shifted his gaze from the top of the wall to me.
“Why is Fairy Yun Mu here? I recall this section of the wall being quite wide. How did you manage to fall off?”
I looked up, only to find that the culprit, Ling Wei, had long since vanished without a trace, leaving me to face the music alone.
So much for ‘sticking together’!
I let out two dry laughs. “Haha, just passing through. Just passing through.”
I took Divine Lord Rong Yan’s hand to steady myself as I slowly stood up.
His hand was dry and warm, a sensation that made me want to linger.
I even wanted to hold on for a moment longer, but Mo Ze’s gaze was burning intensely beside us, so I had no choice but to withdraw my hand sheepishly.
Divine Lord Rong Yan asked me, “Are you okay?”
I nodded, then quickly shook my head. “It’s nothing, just a minor injury.”
“Mm.” Divine Lord Rong Yan turned back to Mo Ze. “Then I shall take my leave.”
Mo Ze responded with a formal cupped-hand salute.
“Safe travels, Divine Lord.”
The crowd of fairies behind us also bowed to see him off.
As Rong Yan walked away, the fairies scattered like startled birds, leaving only me staring at his retreating figure.
I rubbed my fingertips; a trace of his warmth still remained there.
His voice was very familiar, as if I had heard it somewhere before.
It sounded a bit like Rong Xu’s, yet it was even more pleasant to the ear.
I slapped my cheeks to snap myself out of it.
I must be missing that mortal man too much.
A leisurely voice drifted from behind me.
“He’s already far away. Are you still looking?”
Mo Ze was staring at me with a teasing glint in his eyes.
I prepared to turn and leave, but Mo Ze spoke again:
“This is your first time at my mansion. Won’t you stay for a cup of tea?”
I politely declined.
“Why so distant? Clearly, next month we are going to…”
“Immortal Lord Mo Ze,” I interrupted him, emphasizing every word, “Watch your tongue.”
Mo Ze gave a light chuckle and nodded.
“Then, for the banquet being held for Divine Lord Rong Yan tomorrow, please do me the honor of attending.”
