We left the licensing hall, and Xu Bai took me shopping at a pet store.

The saleswoman pointed to a row of instant foods resembling cup noodles.

“These are specially formulated human feed. Quick and easy to serve. If you don’t have time to heat them, they can be eaten dry.”

Xu Bai looked at me. “See anything you like?”

I shook my head.

The food smelled wonderful, but it looked awful.

Nothing about it made me want to eat.

I still preferred proper, traditional meals.

Xu Bai patted my head. “That’s all right. I’ll learn how to make the food you like when we get home.”

In the end, we didn’t buy any human instant food, but we still left with armfuls of bags.

They were all filled with daily necessities, clothes, and things like that.

Just as we were about to leave, Xu Bai stopped.

I turned back. “What’s wrong?”

“…Wait here. I need to buy something. I’ll be right back.”

He turned and walked into a pink-hued adult store.

Curious, I followed him inside. “What is this place?”

Xu Bai jumped. When he turned, he instinctively hid what he was holding.

“Why did you follow me?”

“This is… birth control.”

I was curious. “We need that?”

His hair looked as though it had caught fire, turning the red of a flaming sunset.

“With a human body, you do…”

“Otherwise, you’ll have octopus babies.”

“…” Silently, I grabbed several more and stuffed them into his hands.

Xu Bai started for the register, but I pulled him back. “What’s the hurry?”

“Let’s look at these clothes and toys and whips some more.”

He was too embarrassed to look.

So he followed right on my heels, still wearing a flaming sunset on his head.

I picked out a little pink whale and placed it in the basket.

Xu Bai stared at that little pink whale for a long time. His hair slowly turned black.

…

I had no choice but to turn to the sales clerk. “Excuse me. Do you have one shaped like a little octopus?”

They really did.

Xu Bai was satisfied.

His hair kept shifting between yellow and pink.

By the time we finished shopping and went to pay, I had crammed the basket full.

Waiting in line was too boring.

I looked left, then right. By the time I came to my senses, I was lost in the mall.

“How did another stray human get in here?”

A mall security guard approached with an electric baton. “Where’s your owner? Do you have a human license?”

The guard was an enormous brown bear who had retained most of his animal traits.

I was a little frightened. “I do have an owner. We just haven’t had time to get my license yet…”

“Another stray pretending to have an owner. You’re here to steal, aren’t you?”

“No, no, I really do have an owner.” I backed away as I spoke.

Ignoring me, the guard raised his baton and moved to drive me off. Terrified, I turned and ran.

After only a few steps, I crashed into a broad chest.

“She’s my pet.”

The stranger was tall and straight-backed. When he lifted me with one arm, the black fabric of his suit pulled with the motion, revealing the watch at his wrist.

He had cold eyes, prominent brows, and sharply cut features.

Most important of all was his stat panel.
