The stranger’s name was Fu Yan.

Head propped on one hand and long legs crossed, he sat on the sofa and studied me without blinking.

He held me in his lap with one arm around my waist.

I turned to Fu Yan. “You’re his boss?”

“Yes.” He was not modest in the slightest. “The kind with a great deal of money.”

He asked with interest, “What about your owner? Is he rich? Can he give you a good life?”

“Of course.” I refused to be outdone. “My owner is a prince!”

Gu Yuan reached us at that very moment.

“Oh, isn’t this the little stray Xu Bai took in?”

He burst out laughing. “I knew it. Did his true form scare you into running away?”

Fu Yan turned to look at him. “You know her owner?”

“Of course. Xu Bai.”

“He’s pretentious as hell, always going around claiming he’s some octopus prince.”

Angry, I reached for Gu Yuan’s ear to teach him a lesson.

I couldn’t quite reach it and “accidentally” slapped him instead.

Gu Yuan held his cheek. Silence fell.

The situation did not look good for me.

“Fuck,” Gu Yuan blurted. “Even the way humans hit people is adorable?”

Fu Yan ignored him. “Send me Xu Bai’s contact information. Then you can leave.”

Fu Yan massaged my palm, which had gone red from the slap. “Don’t casually provoke carnivorous beastfolk again.”

Fu Yan just felt strange somehow.

“Have you seen his true form?”

“Whose?”

“Xu Bai’s.”

“Of course.”

Fu Yan raised his eyes to mine. “You aren’t afraid? If you are, I can adopt you.”

“…Not to be rude, but how are you, a snake, any better than him?”

He fell silent. “My true form is actually quite cute.”

“Yueyue.”

I turned and jumped up happily. “Xu Bai!”

Xu Bai’s gaze fell on the snake tail around my waist before rising to Fu Yan. “Thank you for looking after her, but you may frighten her like that.”

Fu Yan did not loosen his tail. “If your true form doesn’t scare her, why would mine?”

Xu Bai held out a hand to me. “At least my tentacles are pink. Yours is black.”

Fu Yan scoffed, his narrow eyes sliding toward me. “Some parts of me are pink too, actually.”

I stared. “…”

Fu Yan rose and tidied his clothes at an unhurried pace. “You’re sure you don’t want to come with me? As far as I know, he hasn’t formally adopted you yet. You still have the right to choose your owner.”

Xu Bai’s grip tightened around my hand.

Then, when I hesitated, he slowly relaxed it. “He’s right. I’ll respect your choice.”

The next moment, his pink tentacles burst out beyond his control.

“Mmph…” Xu Bai slapped his disobedient tentacles down, retreated slightly, and apologized in a rush. “I’m sorry.”

Then he ordered them, “Stop it. Get down. You’ll frighten her.”

The tentacles withdrew reluctantly.

“…I’ll chop them off and make octopus balls for you tonight.”

Hearing that, the little tentacles let go, aggrieved.
