In the evening, my brother and Jiang Ning hid in the shadows outside the school gate, lying in wait.

I crouched beside Xie Yu’an, taking notes.

“Tell me again. What does she hate you doing the most?”

“Grades dropping, coming home too late, locking my bedroom door, chatting for more than ten minutes, and-”

Xie Yu’an paused before adding one last thing.

“Puppy love.”

Without a hint of doubt, I held my little notebook and pondered for a moment, drawing a circle around the ‘puppy love’ entry.

“Good, that’s the plan!”

I affectionately linked my arm with Xie Yu’an’s, acting the part of a delicate, clinging girl as we walked toward the school gate.

Xie Yu’an’s body visibly stiffened.

My movements faltered as I realized what I had just done.

The night was deep, and everything was silent.

Only the sound of our two breaths intertwined intimately.

Over the distance of just a few steps, I felt increasingly uneasy and guilty.

The moment we stepped out of the school gate, my brother let out a sharp, explosive shriek from the darkness: “Something’s wrong!”

I looked toward the sound, but instead, I saw Xie Yu’an’s adoptive mother storming toward us in a rage.

She didn’t seem affected by my brother’s shouting at all.

Without thinking twice, I grabbed Xie Yu’an’s hand and ran.

Just as we turned a corner, my brother and Jiang Ning caught up.

My brother was still shouting:

“Who gave you permission to hold my sister’s hand? Let go! Let go!”

I gave a dry laugh.

“Haha, actually, I’m the one holding his.”

My brother’s shouting grew even louder.

If Jiang Ning hadn’t reached her limit and covered his mouth, the nearby residents would have come out thinking there was a fire.

That night, my brother arranged for Xie Yu’an to stay in the guest room furthest from mine. In the morning, he headed to school with us.

As I expected, that woman was already waiting in the office.

Xie Yu’an told me her name was Xie Yin.

The moment Xie Yin saw me, her eyes blazed with fury as she rushed over.

“Are you the shameless girl who’s been seducing our Yu’an? Come here! You’re so young-how did your parents raise you?”

Without a word, my brother stepped in front of me.

Xie Yin grabbed his collar and shoved him aside.

My brother took the opportunity to collapse, sliding across the floor with practiced grace before clutching his leg and howling in pain, “Ah! My leg is broken! Pay up!”

I dropped to my knees on cue, eyes brimming with tears as I grabbed my brother’s shoulders and shook him back and forth. “Brother! Brother! Don’t die!”

It was still early, and the only person in the office was the overworked Ms. Yu.

She had some understanding of Xie Yu’an’s family situation. Watching our performance, she suddenly had a stroke of inspiration.

“Oh my, Young Master Shen, how did you get hurt? I’ll have the Shen Family send someone to pick you up immediately! However, this has nothing to do with the school. Please don’t take your anger out on us; just let Student Xie’s mother pay for it herself.”

“How is it not related?” My brother roared in anger.

“I’m telling you, if anything happens to my leg, I’ll take back those buildings my family donated to this school! And you, Xie Yu’an! I’ll make sure no high school in this country dares to accept you!”

I strongly suspected that last sentence was him taking the chance to settle a personal grudge.

Xie Yin’s hand, which she had already raised to strike, froze mid-air.

“Young Master? Shen Family? Donated buildings?”

She murmured, her face stiffening as she turned around with a forced smile.

“It’s a misunderstanding, all a misunderstanding. I barely used any strength. How could it be a fracture?”

My brother gave a cold snort.

“That’s not for you to decide.”

Xie Yin’s pent-up rage was stifled, and her hands trembled with frustration.

“You… you all teamed up to frame me!”

I covered my mouth dramatically, gasping for air.

“Auntie, you can eat whatever you want, but you shouldn’t say whatever you want. There are security cameras in the office. It was clearly you who pushed my brother!”

Seeing that things were going south, Xie Yin began to scream recklessly.

“Call the police! I want to call the police!”

Xie Yu’an, who had been silent the whole time, finally spoke up.

“Mom, let’s stop here.”

Xie Yin froze. She realized that Xie Yu’an hadn’t called her that in a very long time.

So many years had passed.

The time she spent being hysterical and he spent responding with silence had long since surpassed the warm, simple days they once shared.
