Chapter 172

Dr. Yan had already plunged headfirst into his research.

Qi Lingwu accompanied him, serving as both assistant and protector.

This was the first time they had kept an Aberrant within the team. While the combatants weren’t worried, Dr. Yan and the others were, after all, ordinary people, so they still had to remain on high alert.

Hao Jingye held a tablet displaying a map with a single red dot in motion.

A second screen stood nearby, providing real-time surveillance and keeping a firm grasp on the Aberrant’s movements.

Hao Jingye looked back. “Sister Sheng, are you feeling any better?”

“I’m fine.” Sheng An opened her eyes and looked at him. “What is it?”

Hao Jingye was worried about her health. What normal person would be fine while running a fever every single day?

Sheng An’s voice had grown quite hoarse, and her energy was noticeably flagging.

“Go ahead,” Sheng An said, clearing her throat and signaling for him to speak.

Hao Jingye sighed softly before getting down to business.

“Sister Sheng, there’s definitely more than one Blood Pool, Priest, and Monster. I’ve already written a report and had Wan Yuan send it to Jing City Base for screening. They’ll try to identify and deal with all similar situations as much as possible.”

Song Linwei added, “They shouldn’t just be hidden within the Great Fire. They could have a Secret Base hidden anywhere.”

Hao Jingye nodded. “I’ve made a special note of that.”

Jiang Yu sighed. “It’s terrifying. The Aberrants are actually developing in secret. Are they trying to catch us off guard?”

Li Wanyun had been worried before, but now she had come to terms with it. She patted Jiang Yu’s shoulder.

“Isn’t it better that we noticed early? Knowing what they’re up to is better than letting them evolve in secret. Besides, we’ve found the weakness of this Monster, so it won’t be that hard to deal with.”

She and Long Tianyu exchanged a glance, both seeing complex emotions in each other’s eyes.

In their memories of their Previous Life, they had always fought alone. Forget a terrifying Triple-Type Aberrant-even a slightly unusual Aberrant would often cause them to suffer heavy losses.

But having a team was different.

A team had a Leader, a Strategist, and partners. They also had the backing of the Nation, allowing them to identify problems and find solutions as quickly as possible.

This was especially true with Sister Sheng, Hao Jingye, and Qi Dui.

Sister Sheng was their Spiritual Pillar. She could always find a solution the fastest, formulate a plan, and break through any crisis.

Although Hao Jingye had no Supernatural Ability, he was incredibly intelligent. He could handle all the logistics and details, both inside and out.

Qi Dui was a Human Weapon. With him around, they felt at ease.

With them by their side, even when facing situations more brutal than in their Previous Life, and even knowing more worrying “truths” and secrets they had never considered before, they still possessed the courage to press forward.

They were even willing to ride the wind forward to uncover all the unknown truths.

Because they were a team. They were the Spark.

They were hope itself.

Hao Jingye continued, “The Nation will attack the bases directly once they’re discovered. However, I feel like M is very cautious, so they might not be easy to find. The higher-ups want us to follow this Priest and eliminate as many as possible.”

Sheng An nodded.

Her eyes turned to the map. On the screen, the direction of movement was heading exactly toward the Southwest…

“It’s good that it’s the same direction. We can head to the Southwest while dealing with these Aberrants along the way,” Sheng An said calmly.

Hao Jingye paused slightly.

Then, he lowered his voice. “Sister Sheng, the higher-ups say that M is well-informed and that Aberrants can communicate with each other. Plus, since they are already artificially cultivating High-level Aberrants… they might go after the Healing Type Superpower User.”

Upon hearing this, everyone’s expression turned grim.

One of the goals of this trip was the Healing Type Superpower User. Group B’s combat strength was very comprehensive; they were only missing a healer to reach near-perfection.

From the moment they heard news of a Healing Type Superpower User in the Southwest Region, that person had already been categorized as a future teammate.

If the Aberrants got to them first…

“We have to get to the Southwest Region as soon as possible.” Wu Buyu frowned deeply. “I just hope that person can survive until we enter the Southwest.”

Ever since the last message was barely managed to be sent back, there had been no further intelligence from the Southwest Region. No one knew the current state of the Shelters or the Healing Type Superpower User there.
Hao Jingye flipped through maps and various documents, pointing to a specific location.

“Our next stop is the D3 Shelter. D3 isn’t far from the mountain where the Aberrants gathered. They already noticed the bombardment and reached out to me for information.

“I notified them in advance. We’ll pick up the Fragments directly, then keep moving to catch up with Li Xin and the others.”

To keep pace with Li Xin’s group, the convoy didn’t even return to the C9 Base.

Of course, that was because the situation at C9 was already relatively stable. With a Surveillance Superpower User stationed there, everything had returned to normal once the trouble with the Aberrant attack was resolved.

The situation at the D3 Shelter was also quite good. Although it wasn’t a site where a Base was being constructed, it was considered safe.

Sheng An nodded, agreeing to the arrangement.

The vehicles continued forward. The red dot representing the Priest and his followers was also on the move.

One following the other, they were like predator and prey in a high-stakes chase.
D3 Shelter.

As expected, the situation at this shelter was indeed very good. From a distance, they could see people waiting by the roadside with various items stacked beside them, everything in perfect order.

There was no panic or unease on those people’s faces-only a rare sense of calm.

This was truly a rare sight in the Apocalypse, yet it was deeply reassuring.

The vehicles approached and came to a halt.

The D3 person-in-charge, Tian Jiaming, raised his hand in a salute before speaking bluntly, “Team Leader Sheng, I’m already aware of the situation. My apologies-the Aberrants had a stronghold on the mountain, yet we failed to discover it.”

He looked somewhat ashamed.

If Sheng An and her team hadn’t flushed them out, there was no telling how many people those Aberrants would have harmed.

Hao Jingye poked his head out. “It’s fine. We wouldn’t have found it either if we hadn’t tracked them. Who would have thought they’d hide inside the Great Fire? Time is tight, so we won’t stay long. Where are the Fragments?”

Tian Jiaming immediately straightened up. He gestured, and an orderly brought over a small box.

Wu Buyu took it and opened it.

There were actually over a dozen Fragments inside!

Tian Jiaming explained, “Quite a few meteorites fell around D3. When the Nation sent out the notice earlier, we collected them. The rest are Fragments sent over from D1, D6, and C10. They’re all here now.”

He then pointed to the items beside them. “Knowing you have a Space Ability user and aren’t lacking in supplies, these are actual photos of the surrounding areas, along with some investigation reports, documents, and samples of soil and small meteorite pieces from several locations in Zone D.”

Jiang Yu and the others’ eyes lit up.

Even Sheng An nodded with satisfaction, a smile appearing on her face. “These are excellent. Thank you.”

“It’s what we should do.” Tian Jiaming didn’t waste any time. He took a deep breath and stepped back several paces, signaling that they could leave at any time.

Every shelter had its share of trouble. If nothing else, the threat of hidden Aberrants was enough to cause constant anxiety. Every shelter hoped Sheng An’s team would stay for a while.

But right now, they were in a race against time.

Tian Jiaming understood the priorities and didn’t even mention the possibility of them staying.

Sheng An returned the salute.

The convoy set off once more.

D3 was the smoothest stop they had made. From the moment the convoy stopped to the moment it departed, less than ten minutes had passed.

It was also their easiest Fragment collection to date.

Hao Jingye glanced at the red dot on the map and nodded. “The distance has grown a bit, but it’s still within the planned range. We need to pick up the pace so we don’t fall too far behind Li Xin.”

Long Tianyu remarked, “D3 really is worry-free. No trouble for us to handle.”

If they had run into Superpower Users causing trouble like back at B11, it would have been a real headache.

“Which shelter doesn’t have its troubles? It’s just that Director Tian knew we were pressed for time and that clearing out the Aberrants is more important,” Song Linwei said, shaking his head.

Li Wanyun nodded in agreement, sighing. “People working for the Nation are reliable. When it comes to the big picture, they can distinguish between what’s important and what’s urgent. D3 was extremely cooperative.”

Sheng An murmured, “Yes… D3 was cooperative. Too cooperative.”

She opened her eyes, her gaze calm. “The convoy will continue forward. Captain Qi, stay behind. Wu Buyu, Long Tianyu, Li Wanyun-the three of you come back to D3 with me.”
