Chapter 84

Doomsday countdown: 8 days.

“So? Are they behaving?” Wan Yuan looked up from his computer, curious.

The “they” he was referring to were the members of Group B.

Sheng An replied, “They’re being quite good.”

If there were only one powerful individual, things might have gone south. However, her Group B was a collection of eccentrics. With so many powerhouses gathered together, no one could truly suppress the others, and the frequent friction between them actually kept everyone in line.

Even Gu Qiansheng, a troublemaker on par with Long Tianyu, had become honest and obedient after gauging the combat strength of the others.

Song Linwei sighed in admiration. “Sister Sheng doesn’t even have Qiu Yu’s Puppet Ability, yet she can make them listen. Sister Sheng is truly impressive.”

Wan Yuan nodded emphatically.

Yu Feng asked curiously, “What’s the situation with Group A?”

Hao Jingye immediately reported, “Group A has added two new members, both Superpower Users with abilities we didn’t have before. Zuo Fan is a Strength Ability User with immense physical power; he’s very strong in close-quarters combat when his ability is active. Team Leader Qiu is currently having people teach him combat techniques. The other one, Ruan Zifeng-”

He paused slightly.

Sheng An looked over. “Is he special?”

Hao Jingye nodded and said seriously, “The Academy of Sciences has classified it as ‘Investigation.'”

“Investigation?” Song Linwei was very surprised.

“Yes, the Investigation Ability.” Hao Jingye pushed up his glasses. “He can uncover the truth through the smallest clues and find his way even in total darkness. The full extent of his capabilities is still being explored. This Supernatural Ability is very unique, so the Research Institute has also categorized it as a Psychic Ability.”

Ruan Zifeng’s full ability designation was-Psychic Ability: Investigation.

Just like Wu Buyu’s other ability-Psychic Ability: Mind Reading.

Yu Feng murmured, “It really is unique. Group A has a psychic type now, too.”

Wan Yuan added, “It’s more of a support type, but if a support ability is used well, it can be far more powerful than an offensive one.”

Hao Jingye nodded with a serious expression. “The higher-ups place great importance on psychic types. The Research Institute is focusing its studies on Wu Buyu and Ruan Zifeng because-”

Sheng An finished his sentence slowly, “Because a Psychic Ability might be able to help detect Aberrants.”

Everyone gasped in unison.

What was the greatest crisis of the Apocalypse?

Aside from the initial meteor strikes, the biggest threat after the end of the world wasn’t natural disasters, but the Aberrants.

The authorities could actively prepare for natural disasters.

But they had no way to guard against Aberrants, who could appear among humans at any moment after the Apocalypse began.

If psychic types could help identify Aberrants, then humanity would have a weapon in this bloody duel, rather than facing them empty-handed and waiting for the Aberrants to strike first.

Sheng An had been exceptionally kind to Wu Buyu before precisely because she valued his Psychic Ability!

Song Linwei murmured, “But psychic types are too rare.”

As if remembering something, he asked hurriedly, “Can we find the two Psychic Ability Users that Li Wanyun and Long Tianyu know about?”

Regardless of whether they had awakened before the Apocalypse, as long as it was certain they possessed psychic powers, the state had to bring them into the fold!

Hao Jingye sighed. “We have no clues about the one in the north; there’s currently zero information. As for the other, we only know she’s called ‘Ms. Xu.’ All other details are unknown.

“We asked Yang Chuan, but he doesn’t know any ‘Ms. Xu.’ Our only option is to find every teacher with the surname Xu in Jing City and the surrounding areas and have Long Tianyu identify them one by one.”

Sheng An asked, “Has that been assigned to him?”

Hao Jingye nodded.

Long Tianyu was already screening them. However, because he had only met her once, his efficiency was low. Furthermore, he was being somewhat passive about such tedious work.

Sheng An said, “Tell him that if he finds her today, I’ll have a custom Melee Blade made specifically for him-one of a kind. If he doesn’t find her today-”

She smiled slightly. “I’ll watch over him while he searches tonight.”

Hao Jingye: “…Understood.”

He immediately went out to relay the message.

The “slacking” Long Tianyu was suddenly injected with a burst of adrenaline. He sat up straight and instantly switched into high-gear, overachiever mode.
Finally, at dusk, Long Tianyu located “Ms. Xu”!

“Hahaha, I finally found her! Sheng An, it’s her. Hurry up, where’s the blade you promised me?” Long Tianyu’s eyes were rimmed with dark circles, but his tone was ecstatic.

Sheng An looked down at Ms. Xu’s file.

She had just picked it up and scanned it when Hao Jingye burst into the room.

“Sister Sheng, something happened! There’s a Superpower User on a murderous rampage!”

Sheng An’s expression shifted instantly, and she vaulted off the desk.

Qi Lingwu’s brows furrowed as he tightened his grip on his gun.

A Superpower User killing people?!

Sheng An looked at Hao Jingye with a grim expression.

Without hesitation, Hao Jingye reported all the information:

“Shi City. A murder just occurred at the Lin’an Residential Complex. Five people were killed and their bodies dismembered before being thrown from the building into the complex grounds. Witnesses saw a shadow like the wind vanish instantly. Two police officers who gave chase were also killed. The higher-ups have dispatched the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department for support!”

Vanishing like the wind at extreme speed-it could only be a Superpower User.

Ordinary people would find such an opponent nearly impossible to handle, so the local authorities could only turn to the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department for help.

As the department responsible for controlling Deviants, it was their duty to handle this matter.

Sheng An threw on her jacket, her expression icy. She spoke as she headed out the door.

“Surround the Lin’an Residential Complex and evacuate the surrounding crowd. No vehicles or people are allowed within a one-kilometer radius. Monitor all surveillance within three kilometers and lock onto the perpetrator as soon as possible.”

“Assemble the team. We’re moving out.”

*

Chaos reigned at the Lin’an Residential Complex.

A brutal killer was likely still inside the complex, and panic had set in. Everyone was crowded at the entrance, desperate to get out.

The police captain was at his wit’s end, but he didn’t dare let anyone leave.

He was privy to certain secrets; he had been the lead interrogator when the Shi City warehouse was robbed.

He knew exactly how terrifying Superpower Users were!

But it was precisely because they were so terrifying that a Superpower User who, for some unknown reason, was taking their revenge on society was even more horrifying.

The perpetrator was most likely still within the Lin’an Residential Complex.

After they arrived, more officers had been killed. The order had come down from above: they were to immediately surround the complex, seal off a one-kilometer perimeter, and monitor everything within three kilometers. According to the latest synchronized data, the killer had not left.

If he let such a terrifying killer out, there was no telling how many more people would be harmed.

However, by keeping everyone penned in here, the killer could strike again at any moment.

The captain could only gather all the residents of the Lin’an Residential Complex together-it was both for their protection and to keep them under watch.

The residents were protesting, unable to understand the situation.

But only he knew just how monstrous the yet-to-be-found killer truly was.

It was a Superpower User-an incredibly difficult opponent to deal with.

What should they do?

What could they do now?

Night had already fallen. With the killer possessing a Supernatural Ability, how were they supposed to find them?

The captain was frantic. He knew the Apocalypse Special Affairs Department was on its way, but it took at least four hours to get from Jing City to the Lin’an Residential Complex. Even by helicopter, it would take over an hour.

The hidden killer was like a ticking time bomb; he felt as though every second was fraught with peril.

Right then-

From the darkness behind him, the sound of flapping wings suddenly rang out, growing clearer by the second.

The captain whipped his head around.

He squinted into the darkness, barely able to make out the silhouette.

A giant bird was flying toward him at high speed. As he stood there dazed, the winged “bird” landed. The resulting gust of wind made him instinctively take a step back as dust swirled into the air.

But his eyes were glued to the scene before him.

*Thud!*

With a heavy sound, several people jumped down from the “bird’s” back.

Leading them was a woman wearing a tactical jacket, her gaze sharp. The moment she landed, she strode forward and nodded to the captain.

“Apocalypse Special Affairs Department, Sheng An.”

“I’m taking over. Brief me on the current situation immediately.”
