Chapter 85

The captain’s breath hitched.

His eyes met Sheng An’s resolute gaze. In that instant, her stare seemed to pierce through his very soul, both jarring and grounding. It felt as if a heavy stone had finally dropped from his heart; he suddenly had someone to lean on.

Sheng An walked toward the gates of the Lin’an Residential Complex alongside the captain.

The situation was urgent, so she had forced Wu Buyu to bring them over first. However, the distance was too great, and he could only carry three people at most.

Sheng An had brought Li Wanyun and Gu Qiansheng.

One could fight, and the other could suppress the murderous Superpower User. It was the most suitable combination.

She had left Qi Lingwu behind, as he was the only one who could keep Long Tianyu’s group in check.

As they walked, the captain explained, “Because… time was of the essence, we have been monitoring every district around the clock. After receiving the report today, the nearest officers arrived within five minutes…”

He briefed them on the situation as they moved.

It wasn’t optimistic.

The killer had initially murdered five people, brutally dismembering them and dumping the bodies, which sent the entire complex into a panic. Upon receiving the report, police officers rushed to the scene immediately to pursue the killer. Two of the officers who caught up to the culprit were killed shortly after.

The captain knew the situation was critical and that the perpetrator was no traditional murderer. He stopped other officers from entering the complex and, upon receiving further instructions, immediately locked down the area to prevent the suspect from escaping.

The killer was most likely still inside the Lin’an Residential Complex.

As for why it was only a “most likely”?

They were dealing with a Superpower User, after all. Who knew if they had some unknown means of fleeing the scene?

Li Wanyun frowned. “Are you certain it’s a Superpower User? Can you determine what the Supernatural Ability is?”

The captain shook his head.

His expression was grim. “After the bodies were dumped, someone witnessed the killer vanish at extreme speeds-inhuman speeds. When the officers caught up later, they were armed. But they were killed, dismembered, and thrown off the building in a single encounter. That’s not something a normal person can do.”

“A Speed-type Superpower?” Wu Buyu asked curiously.

Gu Qiansheng furrowed his brows in thought, filled with confusion. “Compared to what the killer’s Supernatural Ability actually is, I’m more curious about why they killed. Awakening a Supernatural Ability isn’t a bad thing. There’s no need to go on a murderous rampage, is there?”

Wu Buyu offered a guess. “Could there be something wrong with the killer’s Supernatural Ability?”

Hearing this, Li Wanyun gave a mocking smile. “Put away your naivety. Superpower Users who awaken come in all shapes and sizes. A murderous rampage? That’s nothing. In the Apocalypse, this sort of thing is incredibly common.”

She didn’t know if anyone had awakened before the Apocalypse in her previous life.

But in her past life, after the Apocalypse arrived, the first thing some people did upon awakening their Supernatural Ability was to slaughter every enemy and anyone who had ever offended them.

It was hard for ordinary people before the Apocalypse to imagine, but it was the truth.

When someone suddenly awakened a powerful ability, killing became commonplace.

Sometimes, Superpower Users didn’t need a reason to kill.

Possessing a special ability meant they possessed a weapon for creating trouble and crisis.

The two men stiffened simultaneously.

Sheng An didn’t slow her pace, her tone flat.

“I don’t care who was killed, and I don’t care why they were killed. After brutally murdering five people, dumping their bodies, and then killing police officers, they deserve to die.”

Those last four words were spoken softly, yet they carried an endless killing intent.

Suddenly, the air grew cold.

Wu Buyu subconsciously touched his neck.

He had originally thought Sheng An might show mercy because the culprit was an early-awakened Superpower User. Now it seemed her rush to get here… might have been a rush to eliminate the killer!

The three of them straightened their expressions and quickened their pace.

The scene was chaotic. The complex gates were swarming with people, all shouting and clamoring.

“Let us out!”

“The killer is still inside! Instead of catching the killer, why are you keeping us locked up?”

“It’s so scary, *sob*, I’m scared!”

“Mom-”

“Can you please let us out? I’m really terrified.”

…

It was a mess.

Li Wanyun shook her head. “It’s just one murderous Superpower User and these people are already in such a state. Sheng An, can you imagine what the entire country will look like when the Apocalypse arrives?”

She looked at Sheng An, her gaze uncharacteristically serious.

“People like me and Long Tianyu, who have lived through the Apocalypse, have always known how difficult it is to maintain order during the end times. You are attempting something that is nearly impossible.”

Sheng An looked back at her.

Their eyes met.

After a brief moment, Sheng An gave a soft smile. “I know. I’ve always known.”
With that, she stepped forward and took the megaphone from the police officer who was maintaining order.

She tapped the megaphone and raised her voice. “Quiet!”

The chaotic scene didn’t settle down completely, but many people turned to look at her, their eyes filled with confusion.

Sheng An took a long stride and stood on a nearby chair.

Her voice was calm and composed. “I am Sheng An, the person sent from above to handle this matter. I know you are all very afraid, but please believe that we will catch the perpetrator as quickly as possible.”

As she spoke, more and more people turned their attention to her.

The noise gradually died down.

Sheng An didn’t give anyone time to ask questions, continuing:

“Rather than leaving immediately, I believe you would much rather catch that perpetrator under police protection to eliminate any future threats.

“Therefore, please line up for registration. After registering, you may leave whenever you wish. If you want to stay under police protection while waiting for the killer to be caught, you may do that as well.”

As her words landed, the noisy crowd finally fell completely silent.

This was their home; this neighborhood was where they lived. Fleeing was only temporary; catching the killer was the most important thing.

Moreover, Sheng An had said they could leave at any time after registering.

The captain immediately shouted, “Line up here, everyone stay quiet!”

Gradually, people began walking toward the line. As more and more people lined up, the previously chaotic scene seemed to become orderly in an instant. There were still voices talking and the sound of crying, but it didn’t stop them from staying in line.

Sheng An lowered the megaphone and looked at Li Wanyun.

“Do you see? This is the resilience of our people. As long as you give them hope and a pillar of support, their ability to adapt is beyond imagination.”

Right now, there was chaos because of a killer.

That was because they had never seen such a situation before.

In the future, there would be chaos because of the Apocalypse.

But with that resilience etched into their bones, as long as they had a pillar of support, they could adapt at the fastest speed. Even without one, they would eventually become their own pillars.

This was a truth proven by history over thousands of years.

And the state was that pillar.

Sheng An and her team were the ones holding that pillar up.

Li Wanyun stood frozen in place.

Sheng An jumped down from the chair and clapped her hands. “Wu Buyu, it’s your turn to be useful. Come on, listen to their hearts one by one.”

Wu Buyu looked at the dense crowd and trembled, his voice stuttering, “Sis, if I say I’m having Social Anxiety… what would you do?”

My god, so many people!

Sheng An gave a slight smile. “I would take you out.”

Wu Buyu: “…”

He silently walked to the front of the crowd, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes. “Let’s do this.”

The captain organized the people to pass by Wu Buyu in pairs.

The residents didn’t understand, but they remained very cooperative. They also wanted to find the killer.

Wu Buyu was forced to begin reading minds.

Sheng An stood a bit further away. Li Wanyun walked over to her side, watching the scene as well.

After a long while, she suddenly said, “It’s really different from my previous life.”

In this life, the state had planned ahead. As long as the state remained, order remained. It was truly completely different from her past life.

Humanity might actually have hope.

Gu Qiansheng was somewhat confused. “Did human order collapse instantly during the Apocalypse in your last life?”

Li Wanyun nodded.

Gu Qiansheng murmured, “That’s strange.”

How could such a large country, such a resilient people, have their order collapse in an instant?

He hadn’t experienced the Apocalypse, but he felt it wasn’t quite normal.

The captain walked over quickly.

He wiped the sweat from his forehead and remarked, “We finally have some leads. Mr. Wu’s Supernatural Ability is very useful. If the killer is really hiding among the residents, they won’t escape.”

Sheng An nodded. “Good work.”

The captain waved it off. “It’s my duty. It’s also thanks to a few young people in the neighborhood who were very cooperative. They helped maintain order from the start. When someone tried to force their way out earlier, one young man even suppressed them.”

Pausing, he suddenly lowered his voice. “I suspect that young man has also awakened a Supernatural Ability.”

The group was startled.

Sheng An asked curiously, “Where is he?”

The captain pointed to a volunteer who was helping maintain the order of the line. “That’s him.”

Sheng An looked over.

The person happened to look back at that moment, and their eyes met.

Sheng An froze.

The man flashed a brilliant, sun-drenched smile.
