Chapter 98

The air seemed to fall silent.

The night wind brushed past, bringing a chill that caused the temperature to plummet. It was getting cold.

Sheng An wrapped her clothes tighter around herself, her voice clear and alert.

“Zhang Jialiang’s example is right before our eyes, showing us just how terrifying Aberrants are. Moreover, an Aberrant retains the host’s memories, intelligence, and abilities. If I were to become an Aberrant, I imagine I would be quite destructive.”

She turned to look at Qi Lingwu, her expression calm. “None of them knew me in their previous lives. If there isn’t some secret hidden away, then it’s highly likely I either died on the day of the apocalypse or became an Aberrant.”

Whether she would become one, or when it would happen-anything was possible.

Sheng An would not rule out the possibility.

Qi Lingwu remained silent for a long time.

Finally, he asked her, “Does one completely lose their humanity after becoming an Aberrant?”

“From what we’ve seen so far, yes.”

Sheng An nodded, her voice certain. “I don’t believe Zhang Jialiang would have harmed his family if he had even a shred of consciousness left. The fact that even his desire to protect them couldn’t help him endure is proof enough-from the moment one becomes an Aberrant, the soul that originally belonged to the body is dead. The body that survives is merely a host for the Aberrant parasite.”

Zhang Jialiang was a living example.

He had shown them the power of an Aberrant, and he had also shown them… their horror.

Qi Lingwu’s fingers moved slightly as he rested the gun he always carried on his knees.

Even after awakening a Supernatural Ability, and even though he could kill without using a sniper rifle, he never let the weapon leave his side. This gun had been a reward from his superiors, and from the day he received it, he had never put it down.

Qi Lingwu removed a bullet from the magazine.

He always sat with a straight back, possessing an unyielding will and a sense of righteousness.

As his body pressed against hers in a faint display of intimacy, his gaze fixed on her, tender and full of affection. Qi Lingwu’s voice was calm. “Then I will kill you.”

His fingers moved again, and another bullet fell into his palm. “And then I will kill myself.”

His tone was casual, as if he were discussing something perfectly ordinary.

The first sentence was firm; the second was equally resolute.

“What if I become an Aberrant?” Qi Lingwu asked.

Sheng An turned to look at him.

She didn’t answer. Instead, she reached out, took a bullet from the magazine, and held it in her palm.

Sheng An chuckled softly.

Qi Lingwu was taken aback for a moment, then he smiled as well.

The two looked at each other, their eyes filled with tender warmth.

Behind them, someone couldn’t help but make a sound. “Wait, what?”

The tone was full of confusion and bewilderment.

It was Li Xin!

Wu Buyu immediately slapped a hand over his mouth, but it was too late. The people in front had already heard him.

Sheng An turned around, expressionless.

Qi Lingwu also turned back with a blank face. Under their combined gaze, a row of heads poking out from behind the eaves shrank back guiltily.

Sheng An spoke. “All of you, out.”

She gave a thin smile. “Wu Buyu, Long Tianyu-are you coming back on your own, or do I have to go catch you?”

The two, who had been about to fly away or use Flash to escape, silently poked their heads out and climbed sheepishly from under the eaves back onto the roof.

Wu Buyu muttered, “We’re coming back on our own…”

Immediately after, the members of Group B popped up like radishes being pulled from the ground. One by one, they climbed onto the roof and stood there obediently, heads bowed as they waited for a lecture.

Sheng An said, “Start explaining.”

Jiang Yu confessed honestly, looking innocent. “Sister Sheng, I was looking for you. Wan Yuan said you and Qi Dui were off on a date.”

Wan Yuan pointed to the person next to him. “It was Li Xin and Wu Buyu who insisted on coming to watch.”

Wu Buyu countered, “Long Tianyu was the one who said you guys went up to the roof.”

Long Tianyu added, “Li Wanyun was the one who suggested having Li Xin build a long ladder so we could watch.”

Li Wanyun said, “Gu Qiansheng told us to keep quiet.”

Gu Qiansheng stammered, “…They all agreed and participated! Assistant Hao was there too!”

Hao Jingye gave a thin, dignified smile. “Sister Sheng, I only came to keep an eye on them so they wouldn’t cause any trouble. I had no selfish motives, and I certainly wasn’t peeping.”

The others: “…”

Damn it, how devious!!

Sheng An gave a half-smile. “Is all your work done? Are you really that idle?”

Hao Jingye replied, “Well, since the formal announcement is tomorrow morning, Elder Zhang told us all to come back early and rest. Oh, by the way, Sister Sheng, I’ve already brought back the clothes you’re supposed to wear tomorrow.”
He was trying to change the subject.

They had finished their work early today and returned only to find Sheng An and Qi Lingwu missing. Upon hearing that the two were “dating” on the roof, the entire team couldn’t control themselves and had quietly snuck up to eavesdrop.

Jiang Yu blinked.

She had expected to witness some intimacy between the two. Instead, she hadn’t seen a shred of affection; rather, she had overheard words that were downright “spine-chilling.”

Was it really okay to pull out bullets and talk about taking each other out while dating?

Jiang Yu was profoundly shocked.

She found it utterly incomprehensible.

She covered her mouth, making sure not to make a sound, but she hadn’t expected that unreliable fellow Li Xin to actually speak up, exposing all of them.

Wu Buyu shot Li Xin a fierce glare.

If they didn’t need his Supernatural Ability, they never would have brought this deadweight minor along!

Li Xin rolled his eyes and walked over to sit beside Sheng An. His fingers shifted between various types of metal as he said, exasperated, “Don’t forget, Qi Dui has also awakened a Supernatural Ability-and a powerful psychic one like King’s Anchor at that. Did you really think they hadn’t noticed us?”

The group: “…”

-You actually managed to be smart for once.

Looking at Sheng An and Qi Lingwu, neither showed the slightest hint of surprise or shock.

Clearly, if Li Xin hadn’t spoken up, the two of them would have just treated them like a bunch of spectating mice and ignored them entirely.

The alert was over.

Wu Buyu blinked, looking incredibly innocent. “What were you laughing about just now? Why does Qi Dui have two bullets while Sister Sheng only has one? If an accident really happens, who is that one bullet for?”

He lifted a foot, attempting to walk closer.

Sheng An saw through his intentions instantly; he was planning to use Mind Reading to dig for gossip.

Her eyes narrowed slightly, and she gave a half-smile. “Then come over here, and I’ll tell you.”

Qi Lingwu didn’t say a word, but he turned his gaze toward him.

In that instant, Wu Buyu felt as if he had been locked onto by something terrifying. Fear caused his wings to burst out uncontrollably as he stammered, “N-n-no, never mind!”

He had to be joking!

Before awakening his Supernatural Ability, if Qi Dui raised his gun, half your life was already in his hands.

And now that Qi Dui had awakened an ability…

One look from him could probably kill!

Almost instinctively, Wu Buyu flapped his wings, putting distance between himself and the two of them as he ducked behind Long Tianyu to hide.

Long Tianyu: “??” You *&…*%¥

Wu Buyu poked his head out. “Don’t curse so filthily. It’s unpleasant to hear.”

Long Tianyu: “Eavesdropping on my thoughts again? I’m going to kill you!!”

Gu Qiansheng found them incredibly annoying and used Silence to shut down Wu Buyu’s Mind Reading.

Finally, it was quiet on the roof.

Li Xin curled his lip. “Honestly, who dates like you two?”

He glanced at the three bullets in their hands, feeling utterly speechless. “Qi Dui, I’m not trying to nag, but you really need to learn how to actually date. Back when I-”

“Back when you what?” Song Linwei said with a slight smile, grabbing him by the ear.

Li Xin: “…Uncle, I was wrong.”

He instantly wilted.

Sheng An leaned against Qi Lingwu, watching them bicker with a smile, her eyes curving into crescents.

Neither she nor Qi Lingwu explained the matter of the three bullets.

Some understandings were unique to them alone.

-A silent bond that provided the ultimate clarity and peace of mind.

Sheng An looked up at the night sky and smiled. “Things are going to get busy starting tomorrow. Get some alcohol; we’ll make an exception and have a drink tonight.”

Wu Buyu flapped his wings. “Right away! I’m on it!”

Long Tianyu’s figure vanished from the spot, leaving behind a mocking remark: “Forget it with your speed. I’ll go.”

Zhang Kun silently pulled a crate of fine liquor from his Space Ability.

Li Wanyun spat out two words toward the direction where Long Tianyu had vanished-

“Dumbass.”

Sheng An was highly amused.

The liveliness on the roof chased away the night’s chill. Even before the alcohol touched their lips, their bodies already felt warmer. Tonight was cloudless, with a full moon hanging high in the dark sky, illuminating the world.

Sheng An took the drink Qi Lingwu handed her and raised it. She smiled, her eyes bright.

“To tomorrow, and to the future.”
