Chapter 99

Doomsday countdown: 5 days.

7:40 AM.

It should have been a perfectly ordinary day. Chu Juan finished breakfast with her husband, and they prepared to head out to their respective jobs.

While putting on her shoes, Chu Juan pulled out her phone to scroll through the news.

Lately, most people had developed the habit of constantly checking their phones. Rumors about a meteorite had been circulating for three months, and in the last month or two, talk of an impending disaster had become constant.

At first, things were somewhat under control, but at some point, grain prices began to soar, police patrols increased, infrastructure projects popped up everywhere, and factories started massive recruitment drives…

It reached a point where even the most average citizen could faintly sense that something was wrong.

This was especially true over the last few days.

Various rumors were rampant. Many online pundits were even analyzing scenarios involving the apocalypse, natural disasters, earthquakes, and the destruction of the Earth… The rumors were endless, each more exaggerated than the last.

Many people had even come to believe that the planet was about to be destroyed and that humanity would vanish from the world entirely, just like the dinosaurs.

Panic was beginning to take root.

Of course, habits ingrained in the bone are hard to change. Despite the constant rumors, most people still went to work and school as usual. Even if their minds were uneasy, they continued with their daily routines.

However, they couldn’t help but buy extra food to stock up at home.

Chu Juan and her husband were no exception.

But today was different. After checking her phone, she froze.

“Honey, why aren’t you putting on your shoes?” her husband asked.

Chu Juan swallowed hard and held up her phone, her expression grave. “Honey, something might have happened.”

On the phone screen, countless push notifications were appearing:

[In twenty minutes, the top national leaders will hold a “Meteorite Disaster National Announcement Briefing.” It will be broadcast simultaneously on all screens, televisions, computers, and mobile phones. We hope that everyone across the country will stop what they are doing and remind their friends and family to watch on time.]

A meteorite disaster!

The word “disaster” alone was enough to convey the gravity of the situation.

Her husband frantically made a call. “I’m going to notify my parents right away. You notify everyone in the family group chats too…”

However, as soon as he spoke, countless messages flooded in; others were already notifying him.

His parents were already calling.

Nineteen minutes later.

Almost everyone they knew had received the news. The couple sat nervously on the sofa with the television on.

Chu Juan suddenly felt confused. “Why is the notice so short?”

From the time the notification was sent to the official start of the National Announcement Briefing, there were only twenty minutes!

Her husband shook his head.

In every workplace, every school, every public space, every giant outdoor screen… the same image was playing. Every mobile phone also popped up with the same link to enter the briefing’s livestream.

It concerned a massive disaster.

At this moment, almost everyone in the country was watching. Even in rural villages, the elderly had turned on their televisions; as long as the set was on, every channel showed the same broadcast.

Of course, some people weren’t watching, but with five days left, they would certainly find out.

Some people, afraid they wouldn’t understand, gathered with others to watch together.

On the screen, the nation’s top leader stood on the stage, positioned in the very center. His face alone, appearing on the screen, gave people a sense of peace and stability.

“I am sorry to disturb everyone so suddenly today, but this is a matter involving the safety of people all over the world. Therefore, we must inform every person in the country in this manner…”

The Great Leader’s voice was gentle yet firm.

His slow, steady tone caused the tense and anxious crowd to set aside their restless thoughts and listen to him recount a story that sounded “bizarre” to everyone who heard it.

The arrival of the meteorite in five days, the natural disasters, the end of the world, Deviants, Reborn People, Superpower Users…

Piece after piece of information left everyone dazed, followed immediately by an absolute uproar.
In a certain park.

A giant screen stood at the front, drawing a massive crowd. As they listened to the broadcast, the air filled with a cacophony of voices.

“My God, does this mean the world is ending?”

“What is this ‘rebirth’ thing? We’ve already lived through this once? If it’s destined to be this tragic, what are we supposed to do?”

“Oh heavens, are we all going to die?”

“This is too shocking. How can something like this be happening?”

“Shh! Quiet! Keep listening!”

…

The leader took a deep breath and continued:

“I know that at this moment, everyone is worried, struggling with anxiety and despair. But as long as the world has not been completely destroyed, we must never give up.

“As long as the nation stands, we will do everything in our power to protect our people. Disasters are terrifying, but throughout our long history, have we ever faced few of them?

“While this disaster is indeed severe-even referred to as the ‘Apocalypse’-we are not unprepared.

“Please, everyone, settle down and listen to the preparations the state has made for this crisis…”

His voice commanded silence.

In rowdy schools across the country, students fell still, their eyes glued to their screens.

No matter how much they wanted to say or how many thoughts were racing through their heads, they could discuss it after the National Announcement Briefing ended. Right now, they desperately wanted to know what the government had done.

A disaster of this scale…

How much preparation had the state actually made? Could they give the people hope for survival?

Behind the leader, the screen cut to a massive display showing a series of photos, videos, and hard data.

What was the primary concern during an apocalyptic disaster?

Food!

“I know everyone is most concerned about the food supply. After confirming the details of the Apocalypse from the Reborn Person, the state immediately began implementing a grain stockpiling plan-reclaiming resources, rushing harvests, purchasing, processing…”

Page after page of staggering data appeared on the screen, accompanied by real-time photos.

The feed switched again, showing live broadcasts from various locations.

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is a temporary granary for a shelter. We have stockpiled a one-year food supply for the entire shelter.”

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is a county-level food dispatch center. We have ensured that every shelter has stockpiled over a year’s worth of food. This county center also holds a six-month supply for all shelters within its jurisdiction, ready for immediate dispatch.”

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is a municipal-level food dispatch center…”

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is a provincial-level…”

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is the Central Grain Reserve Zone. Across dozens of secret underground warehouses, we have stockpiled a two-year food supply for the entire nation. This is humanity’s final line of defense!”

The scene shifted again.

At livestock farms, massive quantities of poultry were being slaughtered and transported by the truckload to factories working around the clock.

Endless streams of fresh meat, dried meat, and canned meat were rolling off production lines at a terrifying speed. They were hauled away by long convoys of olive-drab military trucks, each laden with goods and flying a bright red flag.

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is one of the top one hundred military factories. Our factory’s latest production of Military Apocalypse Canned Food has a shelf life of up to ten years. Our current stock of military canned meat can support the entire population for a minimum of three years, and…”

By the sea, countless fishing boats were delivering haul after haul of fish to coastal factories.

Batches of dried fish and canned goods were produced at a staggering rate. Again, long convoys of military trucks hauled these cans away, fanning out across the country.

“Greetings to the people of the nation! This is a seafood processing plant…”

Beyond that…

Compressed ration factories, biscuit factories, instant food factories, dehydrated food factories, self-heating meal factories, bottled water plants…

Countless factories were still running at this very moment.

The sight of those endless batches of food leaving the factories, the long convoys of cargo, and the mountains of supplies in the warehouses gave everyone an inexplicable sense of peace and confidence.
