“Darling, I’m here. Open the door.”

The gentle knocking sounded like the drumbeat in a horror movie soundtrack—slow, steady, each tap landing directly on my frayed nerves.

Memories that did not belong to me flooded my mind.

I had worked myself to death pulling an all-nighter, then woken inside a crime novel as the cheating boyfriend murdered and cooked in one of its crimes of passion.

The person outside was my official boyfriend, Xu Qiao.

He was also my future killer.

I still remembered the book’s description of the moment the police, armed with irrefutable evidence, broke in to arrest him:

*The door crashed open. The curtains were drawn, and faint sounds of eating came from the darkened room. The thick, bloody stench turned the stomach.*

*Every joint stood out on Xu Qiao’s emaciated body, as though the monster inside could barely hold up its human skin. Overgrown bangs covered his eyes, leaving only a pointed chin and the dark mole beside his lips visible.*

*Utterly elegant, he ignored the uninvited guests and opened his mouth for another bite of his delicacy.*

The people who had broken in nearly vomited their guts out. The sight haunted them for the rest of their lives.

Goose bumps rose all over me.

I liked reading crime novels. That did not mean I wanted to live in one!

I was so tense that I failed to notice when the knocking stopped.

When I came back to myself, my heart leaped into my throat. I crept to the door and peered through the peephole.

Xu Qiao was taking a key out of his bag.

My pupils contracted as I stared at it.

It was obviously a copy.

He had come prepared.

Heaven wanted me dead!

Whether I stuck my neck out or pulled it in, the knife was coming for me.

I had no idea where I found the courage, but I grabbed the handle and yanked the door open with a bang.

Xu Qiao, still reaching for his key, froze. Then I pulled him into my arms.

He was slender and carried a faint scent of laundry detergent. My legs trembled with fear, but I held him in a death grip.

“Xu Qiao, I missed you so much.”

The novel had explained how we got together.

I had lost a game at a bar, and my dare was to pursue Xu Qiao and date him for one month.

He was the classic loner: introverted, friendless, pale, with hair hanging over his eyes and a slight stoop that made him seem lifeless. You could almost imagine the smell of mildew clinging to him.

After I chased him for a while, we started dating. I continued flirting and sleeping around, but that was not why he killed me.

The month had ended, and I had broken up with him.

Xu Qiao could not accept it. That was why he resorted to such an extreme solution.

He stood stiffly in my embrace for a moment, then wrapped his arms around my waist. His palm stroked the small of my back, almost as if he were measuring something.

The scenes from the book flashed through my mind, and my scalp prickled again.

With lowered eyes, he asked unhurriedly, “You missed me? But didn’t you break up with me last night?”

I shook my head furiously. “We’re not breaking up. I don’t want to. I realized I still love you, so I take it back. We’re staying together!”

Breaking up meant getting dismembered. Who would dare try it?

Xu Qiao said nothing.

Cold sweat slicked my palms.

At last, he murmured, “I see. That’s wonderful. Then we won’t break up.”

My knees had already gone weak. I rushed to agree. “Great! That’s great. Thanks for coming to get me. Shall we go to class?”

I could not bear being alone with him. Feeling that my life was under constant threat was terrifying.

Fortunately, it was Monday, and we had class.

I took Xu Qiao’s hand as naturally as I could and led him out. I did not notice his stiff, startled reaction.

It was almost as if I had never treated him that way before.
