The next morning, I woke to an empty bed. My sister had left for school early.

When I went to her classroom, she was bringing He Yuan breakfast.

“I woke up extra early to make this for you. Take it, please?”

I made another mental note.

I should bring breakfast to the boy I liked.

He Yuan propped up his chin and turned to Lin Wei. “Wei, you haven’t eaten, have you? Here.”

Lin Wei smiled sweetly. “Thanks, Yuan. But why is there only one? Yu Zhi, remember to make two next time.”

My sister handed it to her with both hands.

Suddenly, my head spun. I swayed and instinctively called, “Sis.”

My sister jumped. She rushed over in a panic—and did not forget to snatch the breakfast back from Lin Wei on the way.

She caught me by the arms. “Is your blood sugar low? Eat something, quick.”

Behind her, Lin Wei protested indignantly, “Hey! You can’t take back something after you’ve given it away.”

My sister ignored her.

I felt much better once the dizziness passed, but my sister continued anxiously looking me over until He Yuan’s cold voice cut in.

“Yu Zhi, is this what you promised me yesterday?”

My sister stiffened. She muttered something too softly for me to hear, then turned around with the air of a soldier marching to her death.

“Qing, go back to class.”

I nodded.

Carrying the breakfast she had made, I returned to my classroom. After some thought, I took a small chocolate bar from my desk and placed it on the desk behind me.

The boy there was asleep with his face buried in his arms. One lean, pale wrist lay exposed, its lines clean and elegant.

At the sound, he raised his head slightly and turned. A single eye appeared beneath long lashes, his gaze cool and faintly puzzled.

“This is for you,” I said.

His voice was husky with sleep. “You’re the new transfer student?”

“Why are you giving it to me?”

Several classmates looked over and began whispering. He Ling was strikingly handsome, and plenty of girls liked him.

Someone immediately teased, “Did the new girl fall for He Ling at first sight?”

Another person laughed. “Isn’t she that girl’s sister? Her sister likes He Yuan, and she likes He Ling. What an interesting pair.”

He heard them too.

He kept waiting for my answer.

I said nothing, struggling to decide how to explain.

Taking my silence as agreement, he slowly sat up, grabbed the chocolate, and tossed it to his deskmate.

“Don’t give me things.”

“You’re annoying.”

Just as expected of He Yuan’s brother. He was equally difficult.

The classroom erupted in laughter.

He Ling’s deskmate looked as though he wanted to say something. He had been friendly to me the day before, but now even his gaze had grown complicated.

All at once, I became the center of attention. Everyone was looking at me.

So these were the kinds of stares my sister had endured.

They felt strange.

But that was all right.

If she could persevere, then so could I.

I gathered my courage, lowered my head to meet He Ling’s eyes, and said earnestly, “You’re very good-looking.”

He Ling glared at me in silence. Then he got up and exchanged seats with someone in the last row.

I turned and watched him longingly.

He put his head down and went back to sleep, refusing to acknowledge me.
