Chapter 12

Zhu Qing’an said, “I love your food so much, but I really can’t bear to eat it. Can I pay an extra hundred to switch to another window?”

Chu Zhao: “…”

Zhu Qing’an hadn’t changed a single word; she repeated Chu Zhao’s line verbatim.

You little clever devil.

Zhu Qing’an successfully switched windows and, with a stroke of luck, wasn’t called out by Number Two. She returned happily with her food.

Li Qingyin didn’t copy Chu Zhao’s words, but her luck was a bit worse. She was transferred from Number Two to Number One, and then to window five. It cost her an extra two hundred before she could return.

Judging by Li Qingyin’s calm expression, she was likely the hidden wealthy lady of Room 612.

They picked a relatively clean table to accompany Chu Zhao while she ate.

However, in addition to the food she bought, Li Qingyin brought back an egg. That was likely the so-called ‘gift.’

Chu Zhao nudged Lin Qiu and typed a question in her notes app: [Is this pork?]

Windows three and four both served a mix of grayish-blue meat chunks and bright red meat chunks, so her bowl contained both.

Chu Zhao had already tasted the grayish-blue meat; it tasted like dead rat.

As for the bright red meat, that was what Lin Qiu and the others had been eating earlier. Looking at it now, it didn’t seem to be human flesh or organs.

Lin Qiu actually took a moment to think before shaking her head.

Li Qingyin sent a message in the Room 612 group: [The red isn’t pork.]

[Eat one piece of the gray meat, and let Lin Qiu help you eat the rest.]

Lin Qiu didn’t refuse this time, happily complying.

Chu Zhao had eaten the grayish-blue meat many times now, but she still struggled to get it down. No matter how many times you ate something disgusting, it remained disgusting.

Watching Lin Qiu eat happily, Chu Zhao stared at her.

…Are you really that hungry?

Since she had delegated the task to Lin Qiu, Chu Zhao rested her chin on her hand and watched them eat.

She saw Li Qingyin frowning, wearing an expression of someone facing their execution as she quickly finished the egg. She looked only one step away from vomiting.

Chu Zhao: “…” It seemed the ‘gifts’ weren’t anything good either.

Just then, Chu Zhao heard a faint, weak voice. It said-

“Please, I beg you… just one bite. Give me just one bite…”

A figure was sprawled on the table an arm’s length away, pleading with her in a voice as thin as a mosquito’s buzz.

Chu Zhao turned a deaf ear, watching Zhu Qing’an eat across from her like a little hamster.

With her bangs obscuring her weary eyes, Chu Zhao lazily propped up her chin.

Zhu Qing’an must have a talent for making people sleepy just by watching her eat.

That voice was honestly a bit too noisy. Lin Qiu took a moment from her meal to reach out and slap the thing under the table with one swift motion.

The thing let out a short scream and vanished without a trace.

Zhu Qing’an seemed to be chased by something, subconsciously picking up her eating pace.

After sitting for a while, Chu Zhao stood up and wobbled toward the other windows to scout for information. She mingled with the crowd and cast Reading, finding that their rules were largely the same. Then, she activated Erudition.

[You are certain that they are the offspring of some entity. However, your shallow knowledge leaves you with no understanding of Aberrants, making it impossible to distinguish its species. You can only leave in regret.]

Chu Zhao thought to herself: when would she finally stop being ‘shallow and ignorant’?

She turned to look at her roommates following closely behind her and flashed a smile. “Let’s go.”

They were actually carrying their food with them as they followed her, making them look like total outliers among all the dorm groups in the cafeteria.

On the way out, Chu Zhao saw a girl who was clearly a player. With a face full of hesitation, the girl was placing her leftovers on another empty table.

It was as if some invisible presence occupied the empty table, devouring the food in the girl’s lunchbox with the speed of a vacuum.

As the food disappeared, that thing gradually became visible to Chu Zhao’s eyes.

A blurred silhouette, neither male nor female, but it slowly began to look more and more like the girl feeding it.

As if sensing Chu Zhao’s gaze, it flashed her a smile.

Just as Lin Qiu frowned and prepared to pull Chu Zhao away by force, Chu Zhao had already coolly looked away, shoved her hands into her pockets, and walked off.

She didn’t know where 611 had left their group number, so she decided to leave one herself.
Floating above the cafeteria ceiling were five large digits-[16661].

As for any players who couldn’t figure out that this was a group chat number… Chu Zhao could only regretfully express that if they were that stupid, they might as well just die.

Leaving the cafeteria and heading toward the front lobby, the noisy chatter of the crowd instantly surged around them.

She didn’t notice that while she was writing, Li Qingyin and the other two had each taken a look at the ceiling.

Once they stepped outside the cafeteria, the blazing sun made the air shimmer with heat. As they walked, Chu Zhao found herself huddling closer and closer to her roommates.

Today, it was 46 degrees Celsius!

Seeing Lin Qiu’s brow furrowed so tightly she could have crushed a fly, Li Qingyin smiled and asked, “Are you guys going back to the dorm?”

“My classes aren’t in the same place as yours,” she added considerately.

Zhu Qing’an nodded without hesitation. “Yeah.”

Chu Zhao said lazily, “I’m not.”

Zhu Qing’an immediately glared at her.

Lin Qiu’s expression was equally cold. “Our afternoon class doesn’t start until three. It’s only eleven-twenty.”

Chu Zhao replied, “I want to go play with our classmates.”

The three of them: “…”

Li Qingyin rubbed her temples, a headache forming, and finally sighed in resignation. “Fine.”

She glanced at Lin Qiu and Zhu Qing’an. “But you’re not allowed to leave Qiuqiu and An’an’s side to act on your own.”

She spoke with deep earnestness. “It’s dangerous outside. Don’t get hurt.”

She emphasized the word ‘hurt’ heavily.

Chu Zhao looked thoughtful. “I’ll try.”

The three of them: “…”

They were exhausted.

In the end, Li Qingyin still didn’t feel at ease. She insisted on escorting them all the way into the teaching building and right to their classroom, looking back three times with every step before finally leaving.

Because they had arrived so early, the massive classroom was completely empty.

Chu Zhao looked at Lin Qiu. “Is there really no one here?”

Lin Qiu said chillingly, “There are.”

Chu Zhao: “?”

Zhu Qing’an had already skillfully taken a seat in the second-to-last row in the corner. She beckoned, “Come over here quickly. Lin Qiu will sit in the very front row.”

Lin Qiu let out a cold huff, neither confirming nor denying it.

Upon hearing that, Chu Zhao immediately walked over.

Lin Qiu felt compelled to remind them, “You didn’t bring your books.”

Chu Zhao pondered. “If I go back to get them now…”

Lin Qiu moved to turn around.

Chu Zhao asked, “Could we trouble Qingyin to bring them over?”

Zhu Qing’an was speechless. “…Stop bothering Qingyin all the time.”

Chu Zhao’s eyes darted around. “Qiuqiu…”

Lin Qiu ignored her.

Chu Zhao asked, “Did you forget your own books too?”

Lin Qiu glanced at her. “I’m not bringing yours.”

She paused. “You are not to leave my side by even a single step,” she warned. “Otherwise…”

Chu Zhao finished for her, “Otherwise you’ll bring my books for me.”

Lin Qiu: “…”

Zhu Qing’an grabbed Chu Zhao and, with a force that brooked no resistance, dragged her over and pinned her firmly into the innermost seat.

It was a three-person side row. She sat down in the middle herself before looking at Lin Qiu. “Go ahead. I’ll watch her.”

Lin Qiu gave them both a look before turning to leave.

She shoved her hands into her pockets, looking nothing like a model student.

Chu Zhao looked at Zhu Qing’an, but Zhu Qing’an didn’t look at her at all, focusing instead on her phone.

Left with no choice, Chu Zhao took out her own phone.

The group chat had indeed received a lot of friend requests-a quick scan showed about twenty or thirty.

She took a moment to check the current number of surviving players: [211/360]. She now had a rough idea of the situation.

As she was casually browsing the applications, new pop-ups appeared on her screen.

[‘Li Qingyin’ has requested to join the group. Approve?]

[‘Zhu Qing’an’ has requested to join the group. Approve?]

[‘Lin Qiu’ has requested to join the group. Approve?]

Almost the moment Chu Zhao saw the notifications, Zhu Qing’an turned her head casually and asked, “Is this ‘Lin Jiu’ you?”

Chu Zhao mused, “If there isn’t anyone else in 611 with that name…”

Here was the thing: she had changed her nickname yet again yesterday, this time to [aaa Lin Jiu 611].

Zhu Qing’an’s expression remained unchanged. “There is no such person in 611.”
