Why Is Mr. Handsome Always Angry? - Chapter 3
How the hell would I know who Huaming was?
Was I the one with amnesia, or was he?
I was sitting in the passenger seat of his black SUV, rubbing the red marks the ropes had left on my wrists and calculating my odds of survival if I jumped out right now.
Give people an inch and they’ll take a mile. What a wonderful human quality. The moment I realized I had left the warehouse where I kept dying, I began fantasizing about escaping him and living without this constant fear.
It was just a shame I hadn’t managed a good grope before leaving.
Looking at the scenery flashing past the window, I chickened out.
I rarely chicken out, I swear.
Brilliant as I was, I decided to jump out at a red light. Using my exceptional mathematical skills, I had already calculated my escape route.
In a flash, I unbuckled my seat belt and pulled… failed to pull the door open…
Oh. He had locked it.
Two streams of remorseful tears ran down my face.
I was an idiot. Truly.
I turned and, sure enough, met his deeply icy gaze.
“Um… I was just going to buy some ice cream at that shop.”
“The foot massage place?” He sneered.
I stared blankly out the window and swallowed in despair. “I misspoke. Actually, I wanted to get my feet washed. Would you believe that?”
Without a word, he slammed down the accelerator. The car shot forward.
A girl with stinky feet, fighting for her life.
Mom had always taught me to read the room. I was determined to demonstrate my ability to say exactly the right thing to anyone, human or otherwise.
I followed him into a hospital, then into a ward.
The young nurse and I stared at each other for a few seconds. I turned to look at the violent beauty, then, at his signal, walked toward the girl sitting in a hospital bed.
I warmly took her hand and spoke sweetly through her bewilderment. “Look at this lovely girl. Even sitting in a hospital bed in patient clothes can’t hide your breathtaking presence. My goodness, to think such a perfect face exists in this world—only slightly inferior to mine. Promise me, if I’ve done anything to wrong you, you’ll forgive me? I’m sure your heart is as flawless as your beauty. Earning your forgiveness would be the greatest honor of my life.”
The girl stared at me, then shyly thanked me.
Success. I could already see freedom and life beckoning.
But before I had enjoyed that for even a second, the handsome man roared behind me, “Xu Ye! I told you to apologize to Huaming! What are you doing?”
“I am apologizing!” His shout startled me, then made me angry too.
“You…” He seemed furious, frowning and glaring. I suspected he might pull out a gun and shoot me at any moment.
But this was a hospital. Maybe they could save me?
“Ye.” While I was calculating how to pay the medical bills if he shot me and the doctors revived me, a sweet female voice called my name.
The girl in the next bed was looking at me.
I approached and checked the information board at the foot of her bed. Her name was Zhi Huaming.
Oh-ho. I’d got the wrong one. Why hadn’t anyone said so?
No big deal. I could handle this.
So I warmly took Huaming’s hand and began, “Look at this lovely girl.
I repeated my earlier speech word for word. A godlike memory. That was me.
The whole ward went silent for more than ten seconds. I almost wondered whether someone had pressed pause on everyone.
Huaming rescued me from the awkwardness. I immediately warmed to this delicate girl.
“Ye, you don’t have to apologize. What happened that day really was my fault. I shouldn’t have upset you,” she said softly.
I blinked my wide eyes a few times. “This is embarrassing, but if I said I don’t remember what I did to you that day, would you believe me?”
“…”
“You beat her up.” Mr. Handsome’s voice sounded behind me, cold as a sinister wind.
No. That wasn’t me.
“Have you heard that nobody can ever step into the same river twice?” If he was willing, surely he could read the sincerity shining in my eyes.
“Xu Ye,” he said gravely. “Speak plainly.”
You got it.
“The me from a second ago and the me from this second aren’t the same me.”
Listen to that. Was that plain enough?
“If you don’t intend to apologize properly…” he began.
I hated to admit it, but I chickened out.
Okay. Fine.
Then I must have beaten her up. I shed tears of indignation.
You can sit at home doing nothing and still get stuck taking the blame.
