Chapter 2

The next day, I woke up feeling like my whole body had fallen apart.

My wrists were so sore that even getting dressed was a struggle.

The doorbell rang several times before I finally braced myself against the wall and opened the door.

“Zhou Ran…”

I thought Zhou Ran had come back.

But outside the door was an unfamiliar face.

“Who are you?”

“Hello. My name is Gu Yanzhi.”

“If I’m not mistaken, you’re Su Tingyun, Zhou Ran’s older sister, right?”

The young man before me wore an expensive-looking coat, his figure tall and perfectly proportioned.

It took me a few seconds to remember that Gu Yanzhi was the male lead’s name.

“What do you want with me?”

Hostility surfaced in my eyes.

Gu Yanzhi froze for a moment, and somehow, he looked a little hurt.

“I’m only here to remind you that Zhou Ran isn’t as harmless as you think he is.”

“That’s all an act he puts on in front of you.”

“Especially after you disappeared five years ago. He was practically insane. He did many cruel, deranged things.”

At the coffee table, Gu Yanzhi pushed a document envelope toward me.

“This is evidence of Zhou Ran suppressing me over the years. Just last week, he acquired three subsidiaries under my name. Those reports saying he had fallen from grace and was too ill to recover were all public opinion pieces he deliberately spread.”

“The truth is, I’m not the one bullying him. He’s the one who refuses to let me go.”

Dense lines of data filled the snow-white pages before my eyes.

I set my teacup down heavily on the table.

“CEO Gu, please leave.”

“With your status, it wouldn’t be difficult to fabricate these things.”

“No matter what, I only believe what I see with my own eyes.”

Gu Yanzhi stood up and stared at me intently.

“Sister, you’ve been deceived by him.”

I frowned.

“I’m not your sister. Please don’t call me that.”

Gu Yanzhi opened his mouth, his voice strained.

“Sorry. I was too anxious just now.”

“I just wanted to say that I really don’t mean you any harm, and I’m not here to drive a wedge between you. I’m just worried about your safety.”

“Zhou Ran’s emotional state is extremely unstable. He even has a tendency to harm himself.”

I threw the document envelope at Gu Yanzhi.

“Are you saying he drugged himself?”

“That he injured himself that badly?”

“Gu Yanzhi! Let me tell you this-if you dare touch Zhou Ran again, I’ll drag you to hell even if it costs me my life!”

A flicker of helplessness flashed through Gu Yanzhi’s eyes.

“I really didn’t.”

“If you don’t believe me, you can verify all of this evidence yourself.”

“I’m just worried about you!”

The documents fell to the floor, and several photos scattered out.

They were unmistakably shots of Zhou Ran cutting himself. The wounds were exactly the same as the ones I saw last night.

My breathing stopped for several seconds.

I blinked slowly, then bent down to pick them up.

The sound of a key card unlocking the door rang out.

“Sister, I bought your favorite cake for you.”

“The shop on the west side of the city was closed today, so I ran seven streets to…”

Zhou Ran’s excited voice came to an abrupt stop the instant his gaze landed on Gu Yanzhi.

The air suddenly froze.

Zhou Ran stood in the shadows of the entryway, soaked from head to toe, yet the cake box in his arms was perfectly intact.

His head was lowered, droplets of water clinging to the ends of his hair and falling onto his trembling lashes.

My fingers loosened, and the photo slapped onto the floor.

“Zhou Ran, listen to me…”

Zhou Ran’s gaze fell on the photo, and he looked as if he were about to shatter.

He walked slowly toward me, his eyes reddening.

“Sister, even you don’t believe me?”

“Zhou Ran!”

Gu Yanzhi grabbed him by the collar.

“Stop pretending. That batch of smuggled goods at the docks last month-”

“Enough!”

I stepped in front of Zhou Ran.

“Zhou Ran, go change your clothes.”

“Mr. Gu, please leave. I don’t want to see you again.”

Gu Yanzhi released his grip in defeat, but his eyes remained fixed on me without shifting for even a second.

“Sister… Actually, you held my hand once too.”

“Do you really not remember me?”

I froze slightly, then asked hesitantly, “We know each other?”

Zhou Ran lifted his eyes to look at him, his voice unsteady.

“Gu Yanzhi, Sister is all I have left.”

“Are you going to take even her from me?”
