Chapter 10

We captured the Former Emperor alive.

His accomplice, the Chancellor, panicked and immediately raised troops to attack us.

Working in concert with his three daughters and two sons inside the palace, the Chancellor managed, quite smoothly, to corner Xiao Huan and me in Taihe Hall.

The Chancellor threw back his head and laughed wildly. “Demon Consort Lady Lu! Fatuous Emperor Xiao! This old minister has finally caught the two of you!”

The Chancellor’s children all hurried to persuade him.

“Father, killing the Xiao emperor is one thing, but you must spare Sister Yingying’s life!”

The Chancellor flew into a rage. “I refuse! I am going to chop Lu Yingying, that Demon Consort, into pieces!”

Who knew the Chancellor had such a contrarian personality?

Xiao Huan and I huddled together on the dragon throne, trembling like leaves.

Judging by our appearances alone, we really did not match the image of a Demon Consort and a fatuous ruler.

I was sick with worry. “Your Majesty, what do we do?”

Xiao Huan forced himself to look calm. “We do not know either.”

I thought we were really about to sit there and wait for death.

Unexpectedly, Xiao Huan’s inner thoughts were extremely relaxed.

[What should we have for dinner tonight?]

[Let’s do hot pot. Yingying said a couple days ago that she wanted lamb.]

[We must show off Our knife skills. In a bit, We will go slice some lamb ourselves.]

As expected of His Majesty, a man who had seen great storms.

He had even planned what we would eat after we died and went to the underworld.

But I didn’t want to eat hot pot in the underworld!

I was on the verge of tears. “Your Majesty, hurry up and think of something!”

The Chancellor lifted his huge cleaver and started walking toward us.

At that critical moment, another group of people surged in from outside the hall and began brawling with the Chancellor’s men.

The Chancellor turned his head to look.

It was the Grand General.

The Grand General placed his blade against the Chancellor’s neck.

Then, with a powerful voice, he shouted, “Protect His Majesty!”

Xiao Huan patted my hand. “There, Yingying. Did you really think We would let you die with Us?”

“You have far too little faith in Us.”

Uh.

Why did this palace coup feel like children playing house?

[Sigh. At a time like this, some people might ask…]

[Your Majesty, Your Majesty, how exactly did you manipulate all of this?]

I asked, “Your Majesty, Your Majesty, how exactly did you manipulate all of this?”

Xiao Huan lovingly patted my head.

“If you’re bad, practice more.”

[Just kidding. We would never tell her.]

[The truth is, We have a cheat. We lowered the whole world’s political scheming ability by a factor of one thousand. Only We remained unchanged.]

[The Chancellor being able to come up with the idea of raising private troops and fighting his way in already makes him a genius by current standards.]

And here I was wondering how someone as stupid as His Majesty had conquered the realm.

Turns out everyone else in the realm was even stupider.

Now it was Xiao Huan’s and my turn to laugh wildly.

The Chancellor’s face turned ashen. “I have lost.”

“Kill me or cut me apart, do as you please!”

Xiao Huan: [Perfect opportunity. As a championship-grade show-off, We must seize this chance to look impressive in front of Yingying.]

Xiao Huan clapped his hands and laughed.

“I didn’t expect you to have such backbone.”

“Chancellor, We understand your loyalty to the former dynasty. We can give you a chance.”

Xiao Huan pushed me forward.

“Look at her. She was an imperial consort of the former dynasty. If she becomes emperor, wouldn’t that naturally restore the former dynasty?”

The Chancellor’s worldview reconstructed itself on the spot. “Wh… what?”

I was shocked too. “So that’s allowed?”

Unexpectedly, the Chancellor accepted this premise with astonishing speed.

He and the Grand General knelt together and kowtowed to me.

“Greetings, Your Majesty!”

I frantically waved my hands. “No, no, I can’t. My brain doesn’t work that well…”

Xiao Huan sighed. “Why must you stab Us right in the heart?”

“Do We, the Grand General, the Chancellor, and all these soldiers look like people whose brains work especially well?”

I looked at the soldiers who had been fighting for ages without a single casualty, and among whom no one but the Chancellor had even brought a blade.

Fair enough.

The Chancellor declared with righteous fervor, “At the very least, you are not a fatuous ruler obsessed with women!”

Xiao Huan was displeased. “And what is that supposed to mean?”
