Chapter 3

My whole body gave a heroic shudder.

No way! If I became an Imperial Consort, wouldn’t that mean I could never go home?

I waved my hands frantically. “No-”

Xiao Huan’s face darkened in an instant. “You still can’t forget the Former Emperor?”

[I knew it. You scheming, gorgeous, wicked woman!]

[I hate you! No, wait, you’re my precious darling… I hate you! No, wait, you’re my precious darling…]

I swallowed the rest of my sentence by sheer force.

I said, “All right. Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Xiao Huan was very satisfied.

That night, he insisted on holding me while we slept.

I was just an honest person, completely lost.

There was nothing I could do, so naturally, I couldn’t refuse either.

The bed was like a giant steamed bun, fragrant and soft and warm.

Xiao Huan pressed close against me. His body was warm too.

His sleeping posture was honestly terrible.

He clung to me for dear life, muttering in his dreams.

Things like, “You’re my woman.”

My face felt a little hot.

I entered the palace at sixteen, and before I even had the chance to receive the emperor’s favor, I was thrown into the Cold Palace.

This was the first time I had ever been this close to a man.

I was far too excited.

I stared wide-eyed the entire night.

Early the next morning, Xiao Huan went off to court looking refreshed and radiant, while I caught up on sleep with dark circles under my eyes.

I had no idea who spread it.

But suddenly, rumors that Xiao Huan and I had slept together were flying everywhere.

At court, Xiao Huan casually mentioned that he wanted to make me an Imperial Consort.

The Chancellor exploded. “Your Majesty, you must not! This violates human decency. If word gets out, we will become a laughingstock!”

The Grand General who had followed Xiao Huan in his uprising had never liked the Chancellor:

“Since when do you get a say in our boss taking a wife? Who do you think you are?”

The court split into two factions.

The Chancellor made the first move and started fighting the Grand General.

All the civil and military officials waited to watch the show.

So Xiao Huan joined in too.

The three of them wrestled into a tangled mess.

Xiao Huan came to find me after court, clutching his forehead and wailing like a ghost.

“I’m wounded,” he said.

I was shocked. “Where?”

He slowly lifted the hand covering his forehead.

I looked left and right.

All I saw was one tiny scratch.

Probably from the Chancellor’s fingernail.

Xiao Huan looked smug. “Do you care about me that much?”

With my extremely low emotional intelligence, I replied, “Your Majesty is my superior. Of course I have to care about you.”

Xiao Huan stopped smiling.

[Wow, amazing, hahaha. Actually, I don’t care about the answer to that question at all.]

[If you don’t care, then you don’t care. It’s not like I care that much either. Do whatever you want.]

[That was a lie. I hate you. I won’t forgive you. Never, ever…]

I panicked. “Your Majesty, you aren’t angry, are you?”

Xiao Huan’s face was expressionless. “I am not.”

“How did you even tell? I would never get angry over some casual remark.”

“Do you think my heart is that fragile? What do you take me for?”

[Go on, keep neglecting me. Keep ignoring me. Keep being cruel to me.]

[I am not suffering at all. I am not tired at all. I do not want to cry at all. I do not want to jump off a building at all.]

So that was how it was.

My perspective had been too narrow.

That made sense. His Majesty was the Son of Heaven, after all, the man who had conquered the realm.

How could he possibly get angry over one sentence from me?

This time, His Majesty’s magnanimity was truly vast. His heart was as still as calm water.

I decided to listen to him.

I turned around and left.

Xiao Huan grabbed my sleeve, his voice twisting with panic:

“Where are you going? Aren’t you going to comfort me?”

I said honestly, “Your Majesty, I am now going to keep neglecting you, ignoring you, and being cruel to you.”

Xiao Huan fell silent. Then he laughed in anger.

“Wow. That’s impressive. Really impressive. Outstanding.”

“Just you wait!”

His Majesty truly was hard to predict.
