Chapter 3

Xie Qingyun lay flat again and tilted his head back of his own accord.

He exposed that fragile stretch of his neck to me without the slightest reservation.

“Gege, go ahead. I’m ready.”

I narrowed my eyes. All it would take was a light push of my wrist, one twist, and the job would be done.

I had never missed before.

But my gaze swept uncontrollably over the kiss mark at the side of his neck, then lower, to his smooth collarbones and the faint rise and fall of his chest.

More evidence of me losing control crisscrossed there.

Every mark silently replayed the bone-deep, soul-stealing entanglement of last night.

Xie Qingyun’s lashes trembled lightly, then slowly lifted.

Those clear eyes looked at me. “Gege, am I not lying flat enough?”

No.

I really couldn’t do it.

“Not today.” I straightened my back.

“Huh? Why?”

I spoke at lightning speed. “Today is the fifteenth. Our boss personally set the rule-on the new and full moons, when moonlight fills the sky and heaven and earth are clear, it is inauspicious to shed blood. We call it No-Blood Day.”

“No-Blood Day?” Xie Qingyun arched a brow, his eyes widening.

As if this was the first time he’d ever heard of an assassins’ tower having such a humane holiday.

“That’s right. No-Blood Day.” My tone was firm and final. “It’s a rule, understand? Assassins have a human side too. On the first and fifteenth of every month, blades are put away, killing intent is restrained, and we emphasize, well, the importance of harmony. So…”

I paused and put on a regretful expression.

“Count yourself lucky. You get to keep your little life for now. Next time, I won’t let you off.”

After throwing out that fierce-sounding but utterly hollow threat, I rolled out of bed.

The moment my feet touched the floor, the violent ache in my waist and legs nearly sent me to my knees on the spot.

Xie Qingyun was quick-eyed and quick-handed, reaching out to catch me. His voice was tense and full of concern.

“Gege, does it still hurt that much? How about… you lie down a little longer? I’ll rub it for you?”

I gave a soft cough, my ears heating. “Well, then… rub it a little longer.”

And that little bit of rubbing led to more trouble.

Who could have imagined that a cold-blooded assassin like me, so pure of heart and free of desire, would end up indulging in broad daylight?

This place was dangerous. If I stayed even one breath longer, I was afraid I would die here first.

Xie Qingyun sat on the bed wrapped in the blanket, only his head showing, watching as I fumbled my way into my clothes.

He looked terribly dejected. “Gege… will you come again?”

I frowned at him. “Are you stupid? If I come again, it’ll still be to take your life. What you should be doing now is spending more silver to hire some guards who are actually useful.”

He lowered his eyes in grievance. “Too many people want me dead. If I have to die, I only want to die by your hand.”

I had looked into his background.

His father, Xie Changfeng, had married into the Xie Family, and only gained his current status by relying on the prestige of his mother, the legitimate daughter Xie Wanying.

After Xie Wanying died unexpectedly, Xie Changfeng couldn’t wait to bring the woman he had been keeping outside, along with their son and daughter, back into the residence.

The laughable part was that Xie Qingyun became the youngest young master, while the children raised outside were more than three years older than him.

As the legitimate son in both name and right, he had instead become the greatest eyesore, his position awkward and dangerous.

The little young master looked like someone raised in gold and jade, but in truth, his situation was worrying.

An indescribable sourness and pity quietly welled up in my heart.

He looked so pitiful.

I leaned over and kissed him. “Fine. I’ll make sure you die by my hand. Until then, protect yourself, all right?”

Supporting myself against the wall, I staggered out one unsteady step at a time.

My waist was sore, my legs were weak, and everything burned.

Holding back a mouthful of old blood, I gathered my qi and leapt.

Even my qinggong carried a shaky, unsteady quality, completely lacking its usual crisp, graceful ease.

Only when the night wind blew over me did my beauty-addled brain clear up a little.

How was I supposed to explain this to the boss when I got back?
