He Xueyi idly stroked his feather fan. He gave Gu Huaiwei’s shoulder a light tap and said, “Miss Shopkeeper, be careful. It’s about to get dark.”

“Hm?”

Gu Huaiwei caught the brilliant smile hidden in the depths of his glassy, gold eyes.

Before she could even process what he meant-

the next second, a blinding glare exploded inside the carriage.

Gu Huaiwei squeezed her eyes shut against the light. She instinctively raised a hand to shield them as the brightness stung tears out of her. Then the carriage dropped into darkness-absolute darkness, so complete that not even the faintest sliver of light could seep in through the windows.

It was silent.

Karl’s ragged breathing from sheer fury, Tang Wushuang’s contemptuous chuckle, even the sound of the high-speed train’s wheels grinding over the rails-everything vanished at once.

A sharp, overpowering stench of blood flooded the air.

In that pitch-black void, Gu Huaiwei almost felt as if the reek had taken on a physical form-like red gauze. At first it was only wisps, strand by strand, then it gathered together, drifting around her.

She lifted her hand to touch it.

The red gauze dissolved into nothing.

The span of time felt long, and yet it also felt like it passed in an instant.

It was a strangely wondrous sensation.

Only when she heard the friction of steel on rails again did her vision slowly return.

On the floor lay Fang Weixing’s half-mask. His slender sword had snapped in half. He knelt on the ground in a grotesque posture, his torso and limbs arched backward; his jaw was dislocated, his mouth gaping to an impossible width-and from his throat, a holly tree had grown.

His eyes could still move, but he couldn’t speak.

Tang Wushuang panted hard, large beads of sweat sliding down her forehead. Her enormous steel blade, forged from a special metal and weighing close to half a ton, had shattered into powder in an instant.

Blood dripped from the web between her thumb and forefinger. In that stretch of darkness, she hadn’t even had time to react-her weapon had already been knocked from her grasp.

There were Blood Marks circling her wrists and ankles.

Lu Ziyi hugged her Radiation Frog and shrank into a corner of the carriage. All she’d heard was the frog’s uneasy “croak-croak,” and she’d been waiting for an opening to poison them-but once the darkness passed, some force had clamped around her throat, leaving her almost unable to move.

There was also a Blood Mark circling Lu Ziyi’s throat.

“You didn’t say which one you wanted left alive,” He Xueyi said lightly. His snow-white robes weren’t stained with even a trace of blood, as if he’d never moved an inch from Gu Huaiwei’s side. “So I left them all for you.

“Miss Shopkeeper, take your pick. As for the rest, just have your little bodyguard deal with them. Me-I really don’t like doing bloody work like this.”

In that darkness, only Fang Weixing had sensed the intense killing intent right away and struck back on pure instinct-so he’d taken the worst of it.

“That man shouldn’t be kept,” He Xueyi added, eyeing Fang Weixing. “He just killed two of your bodyguards. Let him pay with his life.”

Fang Weixing was too dangerous-too fierce and sharp. He Xueyi didn’t want to drag him along as a hostage, so he’d crippled him first, leaving him half-dead.

Karl and the remaining three bodyguards stared, stunned, unable to react.

When had he moved?

Why hadn’t they heard a single sound?

Gu Huaiwei kept her expression perfectly calm. He Xueyi’s display had exceeded her expectations, but with so many outsiders present, she forced the corner of her mouth down and said evenly, “The one that’s already grown into a tree can stay here. Don’t bother with him.

“As for the other two-let’s have a proper talk.”
Karl fell silent.

His pupils trembled slightly. At first, he’d thought that White-haired Youth was simply skilled-someone Miss Gu kept close.

But what had just happened was clearly beyond anything he understood.

This wasn’t something a human could do.

If that White-haired Youth wasn’t an ordinary human, then why was he so deferential toward Miss Gu? What, then, was Miss Gu’s true identity?

What kind of person could make someone like that White-haired Youth serve at their side?

Even the genetically modified test subjects from the Black Spiral Research Institute couldn’t go that far…

Karl felt his head spinning.

From the very beginning, he’d felt Miss Gu was mysterious.

After spending some time with her, he’d come to think she was a decent person. The two of them worked together to earn Gold Coin, and his life was better than it had ever been.

And now, he was lost again.

Besides Karl, the other bodyguards were people who’d seen their share of big scenes.

They stood where they were, exchanging looks.

They could all see the disbelief in each other’s eyes, but years of professional discipline kept them silent.

Fang Weixing still wasn’t dead. Since he was still considered a passenger on the bullet train, the cleaning robots wouldn’t come out to deal with the mess.

Gu Huaiwei’s gaze landed on Lu Ziyi, who was quietly edging away, trying to escape. She had the bodyguards bring Lu Ziyi out first.

“Lu Ziyi, are you going to confess on your own? Or do you want me to beat it out of you first?”

Lu Ziyi immediately pushed the Radiation Frog forward.

“I’ll talk.

I was wrong.

I’ll give you all my Gold Coins-just give me one more chance.”

Lu Ziyi knelt on the ground and looked up at Gu Huaiwei with those pretty, fox-like eyes, lifting both hands in surrender.

To save her own skin, she sold out Tang Wushuang and the others on the spot, confessing how they’d contacted her and roped her into a plot to kidnap Gu Huaiwei.

“Tang Wushuang promised me that if I helped them take you down, they’d help me find my dad’s body, and let me and my younger brother return to the Seventh District-so I could be the district governor of the Seventh District again.

They’re acting on orders from the leadership in the Upper District. They came to investigate the bullet train and your hotel.

Because your bullet train goes straight into the Upper District, it broke the original restrictions on entering the Upper District. It made it easy for people who never had the right to set foot on that land to get in, so they want to come after you.”

The opening of the bullet train line had stepped on the Upper District’s interests.

Originally, the privileged class controlled the tickets into the Upper District and only chose the people they wanted to let in.

Now the transit line had been extended right up to the Upper District’s doorstep, openly breaking that privilege and weakening the Upper District nobles’ control over entry.

That was why the Upper District couldn’t stay quiet anymore.

Lu Ziyi didn’t actually know much. She said everything she could think of-what she should say and what she shouldn’t-then shoved all responsibility onto Tang Wushuang.

Tang Wushuang’s expression turned frigid. She tilted her head and glared at Lu Ziyi. “Don’t try to make yourself sound so innocent. You were the one who wanted her dead. You even told us that once we got everything we wanted out of her, we should make sure this woman died painfully.”

Lu Ziyi had demanded that after they finished interrogating Gu Huaiwei, they cut off Gu Huaiwei’s hands and feet, hang an iron ring around her neck, and send her to the Neon Nest to be a noble’s toy.

Tang Wushuang would never forget the crazed smile Lu Ziyi couldn’t hide in her eyes when she made that request.

And now she was putting on an innocent act-what a joke.
