Chapter 79

“I didn’t realize you were so possessive. It’s just a name, but alright, alright,” the two guys said, shrugging. “If I had such a beautiful girlfriend, I’d probably be the same way.”

The two girls laughed. Looking at the large hand resting lightly on Gu Xiaonuan’s shoulder, they couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy.

The school cafeteria was a bit less crowded than usual for a Friday, but there were still plenty of people around.

The four classmates walked ahead, discussing what to eat. “Gu, is there anything you’re in the mood for?”

“Anything is fine with me,” Gu Xiaonuan replied. She looked at the various dishes displayed at the service windows, but none of them piqued her interest.

“How about this one?”

Lu Yichen stopped in front of a particular window and asked. Gu Xiaonuan glanced at it and nodded, saying it was fine.

The others walking ahead turned back, whispering amongst themselves as they watched the interaction between the two.

“The relationship between those two seems a bit strange,” one of the guys murmured. “If they’re dating, shouldn’t they be closer? You know, arms around the waist, holding hands, that sort of thing?”

“Do you think everyone is as handsy as you? Ever heard of the phrase ‘treating each other with the respect due to a guest’?”

“Maybe they’ve been together for years. They might not look overly affectionate, but the vibe between them is great.”

The two girls nodded in agreement. “You can tell just by looking at them-they’re definitely a couple.”

The group bought their food and sat down together. They were all quite talkative, which came as a relief to Gu Xiaonuan.

She ate in silence, listening quietly.

They were all graduate students in the History Department. Although they had different advisors, they shared some classes. Even though their research areas differed, history was all interconnected.

When discussing their respective specialties, their eyes lit up. This was especially true when they shared anecdotes; they all seemed to share the same sense of humor, laughing in perfect sync.

“We’ve been so caught up in our own conversation. Gu, are you bored?”

Midway through their talk, the others noticed that Gu Xiaonuan hadn’t said a word and felt a bit embarrassed.

“No, it’s fine. I’m finding it very interesting to listen to,” Gu Xiaonuan said.

Lu Yichen, sitting beside her, looked at her from the side. He reached out and gently adjusted a stray lock of her hair.

Gu Xiaonuan looked up at him. “What is it?”

“Your hair was sticking up right here,” Lu Yichen said with a soft chuckle, smoothing it again. “There, all fixed.”

The classmates watching them couldn’t help but look away.

It was clearly the simplest of touches, yet it somehow made their hearts race and their faces flush.

“I can’t take any more of this public display of affection. I’m heading out,” one of the guys said, standing up. “Gu, let’s all hang out sometime when you’re free.”

“Okay,” Gu Xiaonuan nodded. Hearing this, the smile in Lu Yichen’s eyes deepened.

Once the classmates had left, Lu Yichen picked up his phone. While they were eating and talking, his screen-which he had set to silent-had lit up several times.

Gu Xiaonuan caught a glimpse of his screen. The person sending messages had a very cute, cartoonish avatar.

Several messages had come through, all of them asking questions related to history.

Was it the girl who had gotten a bloody nose?

Lu Yichen began replying. Instead of typing, he used voice messages, and his responses were quite lengthy.

Gu Xiaonuan listened quietly, having no intention of interrupting.

However, once the exchange began, it seemed to have no end.

The two of them went for a walk around campus as they had planned, but Lu Yichen’s phone continued to buzz with incoming messages the entire way.
The other person switched from typing to sending voice messages.

Lu Yichen tapped the voice messages directly, and the girl’s voice played through the phone’s speaker for everyone to hear.

“She’s a very studious junior,” Lu Yichen whispered with a smile. “Her historical knowledge is very solid, and she has her own insights when discussing historical perspectives.”

Gu Xiaonuan gave a noncommittal hum and walked silently beside him.

Students passing by kept turning back to steal glances at them. “That’s Lu Yichen from the History Department. The one next to him is his girlfriend.”

Listening to these whispers, Gu Xiaonuan figured the matter was as good as settled.

“Senior, regarding the issue of ideology, I believe that since certain dynasties in ancient China…”

Another long voice message came through. By the time it finished, Gu Xiaonuan felt the girl was merely asking trivial questions.

She glanced up at Lu Yichen. Had he really not noticed?

All along the way, Lu Yichen continued his academic discussion with the junior. Gu Xiaonuan lost interest in listening and turned her dark eyes toward the students passing them by on campus.

Her attention was suddenly captured by the sight of a book.

It was a display case that showcased various literary works from time to time, covering a wide range of genres.

Gu Xiaonuan couldn’t help but walk over to look at the book inside. It was Lu Yichen’s novel.

I’ll Come to You.

“Teacher Gu, do you like his books?”

He walked over to her side. “An author with the same name as me. I’ve seen his photo; we look very much alike. It’s a pity that after publishing two books, he seems to have vanished.”

Gu Xiaonuan gave a brief nod. Then, she heard his phone chime with another notification. In that moment, she felt a sudden surge of irritation.

“I’ve finished the walk with you. Many students have already bought into it, so that should be enough,” Gu Xiaonuan said. “The desired effect has been achieved. I’m heading back now.”

Another notification chime rang out. Gu Xiaonuan’s brow furrowed deeply.

She turned to leave immediately, but Lu Yichen quickly reached out and grabbed her wrist. The notification sounded yet again. This time, Gu Xiaonuan’s expression turned cold.

“Let go of me.”

Lu Yichen frowned, tightening his grip on her wrist. “You’re angry. But why? Did I do something wrong?”

“I said, let go.”

Gu Xiaonuan looked up, staring into his eyes, only to look away awkwardly a second later. She had almost forgotten that this man was completely immune to her charm.

Lu Yichen’s finger accidentally tapped a voice message, and the next few began to play automatically.

He held onto Gu Xiaonuan’s wrist, no longer interested in replying.

As the voice messages reached the end, the person on the other side seemed to have realized something.

“Ah, I’m sorry, Senior! I forgot your girlfriend came to see you. I just got too caught up in the discussion. I’m so sorry for bothering you both!”

“Senior, I won’t disturb you anymore. We can continue our discussion tonight if you have time.”

“By the way, I went to see about my nose. The school doctor said it’s fine, just a bit swollen. It’ll be okay after resting for a few days.”

“I’ll leave it at that for now, Senior. Let’s talk later.”

The voice messages ended there.

Lu Yichen looked at Gu Xiaonuan’s increasingly grim face. Suppressing the wild joy in the depths of his eyes, he asked tentatively, “Is Teacher Gu angry because of… her?”
