Chapter 2

Jiang Zhizhou and I had known each other since I was one month old.

The Fu Family had only one daughter-me-and they treasured me like a priceless jewel.

My one-month banquet was held on an extravagant scale, so grand it practically stirred half of Haishi’s powerful elite.

The gifts piled in the corner alone took up nearly half a room.

Naturally, I don’t remember any of it.

I only heard my mother speak of it often, smiling as she did.

Back then, Jiang Zhizhou’s parents brought three-year-old Jiang Zhizhou with them to offer their congratulations.

He wore a little white suit, his back ramrod straight.

While the adults chatted, he stood beside my cradle, carefully studying me in my swaddling clothes.

“You didn’t cry or fuss back then. You were always lying there quietly, observing everything around you. We were terribly worried.”

Every time my mother mentioned this, a trace of worry would linger in her voice, and she would gently stroke my hair.

“Even the doctors couldn’t say why. They only said you might have matured earlier than other children.”

“But the moment Jiang Zhizhou came near your cradle, it was like you came alive.”

I babbled and reached out with my tiny hands, trying to grab the finger he had left dangling over the edge of the cradle.

Even my eyes began to shine.

Jiang Zhizhou’s parents were afraid their son might be too rough and hurt a baby, so they hurriedly pulled him back.

But the moment Jiang Zhizhou left my line of sight, I burst into loud, inconsolable sobs.

No one could calm me down.

The adults circled around me helplessly, at their wits’ end.

Until tiny Jiang Zhizhou gathered his courage and stepped out from behind his father.

Pursing his lips, he carefully wrapped his arms around me.

In a childish voice, he coaxed, “I didn’t leave. Don’t cry anymore.”

Because of that one moment of softness, Jiang Zhizhou was shackled to me.

After the banquet ended, he was forcibly kept at the Fu Family residence for two weeks.

After that, my mother reached an agreement with Jiang Zhizhou’s parents.

Jiang Zhizhou was brought into the Fu Family and raised alongside me.

When I was still a toddler, I clung to him every single day.

We were inseparable.

I refused to eat properly.

He had to feed me spoonful by spoonful.

I refused to sleep alone.

I had to sleep beside Jiang Zhizhou.

I had to listen to him read picture books to me in that same childish voice.

When I grew a little older, my true nature was exposed even more thoroughly.

I displayed an exceptionally high IQ.

I was regarded as a genius the Fu Family might not see again for a hundred years.

But what surfaced alongside my talent was the paranoia and desire for control buried in my bones.

I was willful and dark.

I was diagnosed with compulsive controlling disorder.

Toward the people and things I deemed my possessions, I had an extreme possessiveness.

I couldn’t tolerate even the possibility of losing control.

I would also use all kinds of methods to eliminate threats.

To ensure the other party remained completely within my grasp.

This was especially true when it came to Jiang Zhizhou.

When we were children, I didn’t allow him to play with any other kids besides me.

When we started school, I demanded that even if he wasn’t good at it, he still had to attend advanced classes and competition courses with me.

Ever since Jiang Zhizhou got a phone, his lock-screen password had always been my birthday.

Not only that, I would also regularly log in to all of Jiang Zhizhou’s social media accounts to inspect them.

If I found an unfamiliar person of the opposite sex-or even the same sex-

I would block and delete them all.

Jiang Zhizhou couldn’t do anything about me.

Even when I tore up the love letters others handed him.

Even when I checked up on him over and over every day.

Questioning him again and again about who he had met that day, who he had spoken to, and who he had smiled at.

Even when I used those things as excuses to throw tantrums and make unreasonable demands.

As long as I lowered my lashes, furrowed my brows slightly, and turned down the corners of my mouth.

As long as I put on a pitiful expression.

As long as I let tears slowly slide down my cheeks.

He could only sigh and helplessly indulge my terrible behavior.

Jiang Zhizhou liked me, didn’t he?

Curled up in his arms, I thought this wickedly.

Otherwise, why would he tolerate me so much?

But indulgence, again and again, and retreat, again and again-

It never made a person feel satisfied.

It only made the bottomless pit inside their heart harder and harder to fill.

It made them find more room to press closer, step by step.

He was so good to me.

He made it impossible for me to leave him.

So Jiang Zhizhou had to pay the price.

In high school, we had our first real fight.

Jiang Zhizhou told me he wanted to become a volleyball player.

A volleyball player?

That meant he would leave my sight and spend long periods undergoing professional training.

It meant he would spend most of his time in training halls and on courts.

It also meant he would have close teammates, coaches who paid attention to him.

And spectators who cheered for him.

And all those insignificant things would only steal his gaze away from me!

I didn’t want him to chase some dream.

If he wanted money, fame, or status, I could give him all of it.

As long as he stayed by my side forever.

But whether I pulled at his sleeve with red-rimmed eyes and begged him pitifully,

or smashed everything in the living room to express my rage,

none of my tactics worked anymore.

Jiang Zhizhou did not waver.

His face was pale, but his eyes were resolute.

“I can’t spend my whole life doing nothing.”

“Xiao Fu, I’m begging you. I’ve found something I want. I want to play volleyball.”

We stood facing each other amid shards of glass, like two little beasts at a standoff.

Until I accidentally fell, and a shard of glass sliced across my forearm. A hideous gash bloomed open instantly.

Blood splattered like red beads from a broken string.

Jiang Zhizhou was startled, and his expression collapsed in an instant.

He rushed over in a panic, wanting to treat my wound.

But I pushed him away again and again.

“Don’t touch me!”

My voice was thick with tears.

“If you want to leave, then leave! I don’t need your fake kindness!”

“I’m not leaving. I just want to…”

He couldn’t get through to me.

Seeing blood stream down my forearm,

soaking through my sleeve and dripping onto the floor to gather into a small puddle,

seeing my face begin to turn pale and my entire body sway unsteadily,

Jiang Zhizhou broke down and compromised.

His knees went weak, and he almost knelt.

“I won’t play anymore! I won’t play! Please, let’s go stop the bleeding!”
