Chapter 120

“Hua Hua, please forgive me. Don’t leave me, waaaah…”

The black mist emerged according to its host’s will, crawling cautiously onto Hua Suihe. It pressed against her face, her neck, and her arms, kissing and fawning over her in an attempt to please her.

Hua Suihe placed a hand on Ye Susheng’s back, patting her gently to help her catch her breath. “Why would I ever leave you?”

Ye Susheng shook her head incessantly, apologizing over and over. “It’s my fault, waaaah… Hua Hua… Hua Hua…”

She cried heartbrokenly, but Hua Suihe remained emotionally stable, her voice steady. “What exactly do you want me to forgive you for?”

Ye Susheng’s heart drummed against her ribs. Her eyes were blurry with tears. After wiping them on Hua Suihe’s shoulder, she finally mustered the courage to look into Hua Suihe’s eyes. She didn’t dare say she had stripped Hua Hua of her life in the 3D world, fearing that Hua Hua would never forgive her.

Her lips parted as if to speak, then pressed into a thin line. Guilt-ridden, Ye Susheng averted her gaze, and the tears began to fall again.

She sensed that Hua Hua wasn’t actually angry with her, nor did she truly yearn for her old world enough to abandon her. Because of this, she didn’t feel as much like crying anymore, but she thought that if she could just muddle through with tears now, she might be able to avoid the topic entirely.

Hua Suihe saw through her little scheme instantly. Just as Ye Susheng’s eyes began to dart away, she reached out and pinched her chin, forcing her face forward to prevent her from dodging the question.

“Why have you stopped talking? What do you want me to forgive? What did you do wrong?”

Ye Susheng bit her lip, her mind still struggling. Subconsciously, she wanted to weave more lies to get herself out of this.

Hua Suihe’s tone was soft and slow. “If you tell me now, I can forgive you for anything. But if today passes and I find out later…”

Hua Suihe raised an eyebrow slightly and let out a hum. “Then I’ll definitely be angry. Whether I’ll forgive you then is another story.”

“Hua Hua, don’t be angry.” Ye Susheng’s voice was urgent. Knowing she couldn’t escape today, she racked her brain for a way to phrase it that sounded better. “It was me… I’m the one who made Hua Hua come here…”

Hua Suihe didn’t seem to understand the implication of her words, her expression puzzled. “Hmm?”

Ye Susheng tightened her embrace, closing her eyes. She looked like she was ready to be hit or scolded but would never let go, as if facing certain death. “It’s because I wanted Hua Hua too much. I’m the one who brought Hua Hua home.”

Hua Suihe moved gently to tuck a stray hair behind Ye Susheng’s ear, repeating her words slowly. “Are you saying that the morning I appeared in your bed, you were the one who snatched me?”

Ye Susheng nodded, then shook her head. “It wasn’t snatching, it was… it was…”

Unable to find a better word, she could only fall silent.

Hua Suihe murmured softly, “If that’s all it is, then I have no reason to be angry.”

Ye Susheng’s ears were sharp; she heard even that small whisper. Her watery red eyes widened in surprise. “Hua Hua isn’t angry? Hua Hua forgives me?”

Hua Suihe patted her head, coaxing her in a lazy tone. “Yes, I forgive you. It wasn’t really your fault anyway.”

“Then… does Hua Hua miss that world?”

“I do.” Hua Suihe’s answer was blunt. It was impossible to say she had no attachments at all. Even though she had no parents, she still had friends.

“But I know how to weigh my options, and I have the courage to make a choice. I choose you.”

Hua Suihe had an optimistic mindset. Life would always be full of various regrets; she could calmly face everything she lost and everything she gained.

Whether it was then or now, she always followed her heart when making decisions.

While she was lost in thought, Ye Susheng’s promise rang in her ear.

“I will take good care of Hua Hua. I won’t let Hua Hua live a hard life.”
Hua Suihe let out a relieved chuckle. “Yeah. You never made me live through hard days.”

After laying everything bare, Ye Susheng felt a lot lighter too, and she wanted to learn more about the details of Hua Hua’s past.

Before she could even speak, she heard Hua Suihe ask her in an oddly quiet, eerie tone, “Are you forgetting something?”

The question left Ye Susheng blank. She thought hard for a long while, then, a little on edge, released the hand she’d had around Hua Suihe and obediently sat back in her chair. She picked up her spoon, took a sip of porridge, and stared at Hua Suihe with wide eyes, silently asking what she meant.

Her little performance was unexpected, but then again, Hua Suihe had just told her to drink her porridge, so it did make a certain kind of sense.

Hua Suihe also sat back down and finished what was left in her bowl.

Only after they’d both set their bowls down did Hua Suihe continue the earlier topic. “Didn’t you just ask me whether my world has lifeforms that look like humans but aren’t actually human?”

Ye Susheng’s pupils tightened. So it was that question-Hua Hua wasn’t going to keep pretending she didn’t know.

Every human Ye Susheng had ever met was terrified of Anomalies. Hua Hua had seen those ugly things’ true forms plenty of times, yet she’d never shown fear-maybe because she’d assumed it was just humans dressing up to look grotesque.

Ye Susheng hadn’t wanted Hua Hua to learn this world’s rules because she was afraid Hua Hua would end up like everyone else: afraid of the ugly things, and afraid of her.

But now she’d teleported Hua Hua, and she’d mutated right in front of her… There really was no point in hiding it anymore.

“This world does have lifeforms that look like humans.”

Black Cotton Candy quietly curled around Hua Suihe’s fingers, letting her knead and toy with it-clumsily trying to ease Hua Suihe’s mood.

“Like me. I’m not the same as you, Hua Hua. Everyone working for the Yu Sheng Troupe is a lifeform different from humans. Sometimes they look perfectly human, and sometimes they turn into ugly monsters… Fine, there’s a more rigorous term for it: Anomaly.”

“Oh~ then I get it.” Hua Suihe didn’t need much more explanation. She’d dabbled in Thriller dungeon-type games before. She’d only wanted to hear Ye Susheng admit, out loud, that she was different.

Before, the first time Ye Susheng showed her Black Cotton Candy, and the first time she mutated in front of her, Ye Susheng had acted like the sky was falling. She seemed completely unable to accept what she looked like after mutating, afraid Hua Hua would think she was ugly, and then doing everything she could to muddle the topic away.

Thinking that, Hua Suihe lifted her hand, showing the black mist coiled around her fingertips. “I think it’s really cool. You can even make Black Cotton Candy.”

Ye Susheng was proud of that, downright smug. “Only I can. Those ugly monsters can’t.”

“Mm-hmm! So Ye Susheng is amazing!”

Ye Susheng’s ears flushed bright red, and no matter how she tried, she couldn’t force down the smile tugging at her lips.

“And I don’t think you look ugly after mutating at all. Honestly, I didn’t even get a good look. Would you be willing to…”

“No.” Ye Susheng shook her head fast. Making her plainly expose her ugliest form to her wife under the light-she couldn’t do it.

“It’s really ugly. Hua Hua, don’t look.”

“I don’t think it’s ugly.”

“You can’t.” Ye Susheng refused to budge, and she had a perfectly valid reason. “If I mutate too many times, my consciousness starts slipping out of control. If it happens too much, I’ll end up like before-I won’t remember you, Hua Hua.”

Hua Suihe jolted in alarm. “You’ve forgotten me before?”
