My Ghost Husband Is Ridiculously Overpowered - Chapter 1

I make my living summoning spirits.

That night, a married couple had hired me to call back the soul of their young son.

Silently, I prayed, *Sorry, honey. I know it’s late, but please give me a little dignity when you get here.*

A cold scoff sounded inside my head.

I continued the ritual while my clients waited anxiously beside me.

Then an icy wind swept through, dropping the temperature by several degrees.

In the dead silence, a crisp slap rang out.

I clapped a hand over my right cheek.

The couple held their breath and stared at me in terror.

Still covering my face, I hurried to explain.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. That was just my wife.”

Smack. The other cheek got it too.

I corrected myself at once.

“Ha-ha. Slip of the tongue. I meant my husband.”

The couple looked even more frightened.

I rubbed my face with the ease of long practice.

Not far away, visible only to me, a gloomy but striking man with long hair was walking toward us with a child in his arms.

Relief washed over me.

Thank goodness. My wife still doted on me enough to catch the mischievous little ghost.

Xue Man—my ghostly wife—came to my side. He put the boy into my arms, grabbed me by the ear, and started scolding.

“Yao Que, how many times have I told you to stop taking spirit-summoning jobs?”

I bobbed my head and apologized profusely.

Xue Man released my ear with a huff.

“Hurry up and finish this.”

I gave the couple two talismans and placed another on the little boy in my arms.

The next instant, his parents were able to pull him into a tight embrace.

“Sweetheart, why couldn’t you remember the way home?”

The boy’s living soul had left his body. This was the final day; if he did not return now, he would be beyond saving.

He was too young, and being in spirit form had disoriented him. He simply could not find his way home.

That was why his parents had come to me.

The talismans soon lost their effect, and the couple broke down sobbing.

I quickly reassured them.

“It’s all right. I’ll take him home this time, I promise. Don’t worry.”

It was very late by the time I completed the job.

Xue Man’s expression could not have been darker.

Smiling ingratiatingly, I reached for his hand.

“Wifey…”

He shot me a murderous look, and I changed course without missing a beat.

“Hubby, you’re the absolute best.”

Xue Man shook off my hand in disgust.

“Gross.”

I knew he was not truly angry. He was only afraid I might summon something dangerous.

After all, I had called up every kind of ghost over the years, including more than a few vicious ones.

Xue Man had been the one to beat them all away and rescue me.

I took a little pig plushie from my bag.

“Come on, hubby. Get in and I’ll take you home.”

Xue Man gave my ear another twist before slipping into the plush pig.

He could not appear in spirit form during the day, so I had made plushies for him to inhabit. He could also stay inside one whenever he did not feel like floating around as a ghost.

I lifted the pig to eye level.

“Don’t be mad. Isn’t the piggy cute?”

Another slap was my answer.

Rubbing my cheek, I trotted happily home.

The couple transferred my fee the next day and insisted on treating me to a meal as well.

At the table, they hesitated before asking,

“Mr. Yao, if you’re this powerful, can a ghost still threaten you into becoming his… you know?”

It took me a long moment to realize what they meant.

They thought Xue Man had threatened me into being his wife.

I waved my hands quickly, suddenly a little shy.

“No, no. We’re a real married couple. We even have a marriage contract.”
