My Snake - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
However.
When I woke up, I discovered Big Black was gone.
To be more precise, I was the one who was gone.
I had been scooped up by someone with a hand net.
In that life-or-death moment, I took a deep breath, sucked in my midsection until I was paper-thin, and squeezed through the mesh to make my escape.
But I couldn’t find Big Black anymore.
I didn’t even know where I was.
My surroundings were completely foreign.
Sob, sob.
I was all alone again.
…
I don’t know how long I wandered by myself, but one day, it was pouring rain.
I slithered from a certain family’s garden into their kitchen and stole a biscuit.
Just as I came back out, I spotted a large, injured black snake curled up in a pile of fallen leaves, motionless.
Curious, I slithered over.
“Hey, wake up.”
I poked his head with my tail.
He opened his eyes and swept a cold, indifferent gaze over me.
“What do you want?”
Seeing those familiar eyes, I almost jumped for joy.
“It’s you! Big Black! It really is you!”
His pupils constricted slightly.
Clearly, he recognized me too.
“Mm. You’re still alive. You haven’t lost a gram; you’ve actually gotten fatter.”
I frantically rubbed my head against his face. “I didn’t leave without saying goodbye, and I didn’t abandon you. I was just caught by a human, waaaah. I’ve been looking for you for so long. This is great, I finally found you!”
“I know. I believe you. I’ve been looking for you too…”
Big Black’s voice sounded a bit weak.
I started to panic. “What’s wrong?”
Even though he was trying his best to act like he was fine, I could see he was suppressing a great deal of pain.
Scanning him from head to tail, I noticed a wound on Big Black’s belly that was still gurgling with blood.
I gasped. “You’re hurt! How did this happen? It’s so serious! You need treatment, or you’re going to die!”
But he remained calm. “I know. So, you should leave quickly.”
Reluctantly, I hid my biscuit behind a nearby rock.
Mustering every ounce of strength in my body, I hoisted Big Black onto my back.
He was stunned. “Where are you taking me?”
Struggling under his weight, I made my way toward the house.
From what I had observed, the owners of this home were very kind humans.
The man was a veterinarian, and the young girl had many snake plushies.
The day before yesterday, after I was caught stealing biscuit crumbs, a plate of freshly baked, crispy butter cookies appeared in the exact same spot today.
They were currently taking a nap.
However, the back door to the garden had been left slightly ajar-just enough for me to slip through.
“Hang in there, Big Black! I’m taking you inside right now! You’re so heavy, waaaah. Could you maybe eat a little less?”
Heaven knows, Big Black was twice my size.
The moment I got him onto my back, I felt like I was going to be crushed to death.
For some reason, Big Black was very resistant to being here.
He struggled desperately to get down. “I’m not going in there. Let me go.”
I turned my head and nipped his chin. “Can you please behave? I’m trying to save you!”
He stopped moving and became obedient.
The man wasn’t around, but the young girl was.
So, I brought him to her room.
When she saw the two of us, her eyes widened in a mix of shock and delight.
She hurriedly pulled out her phone to take a photo for her father. “Daddy, look! Two beautiful snakes! They look like white jade and obsidian!”
I couldn’t take it anymore. I collapsed onto the floor.
Male physiques really are much larger than female ones.
The girl finally noticed that Big Black was injured.
She patted my head and said gently, “Don’t worry, my Daddy will be home soon. I’ll go find something to bandage him up with first!”
I nodded. I was exhausted. The carpet was soft, it wasn’t raining inside, and the floor heating made me feel warm and lazy.
I couldn’t help but fall asleep leaning against a teddy bear.
I was startled awake by the sound of the door opening again.
I heard the girl arguing with her father.
“Why can’t we keep both, Papa? You want to keep Little Black, and you want to keep Little White too. You’re making me choose one, but I can’t do it.”
“If you can’t choose, then we won’t keep either of them. Throw them both out.”
Her father still refused sternly.
He said something about what if we laid a bunch of snake eggs in the house.
My cheeks felt hot. What kind of nonsense was this annoying human talking about!
Who wants to have babies with him?
Looking at the still-sleeping Big Black, I thought it over.
Even though the environment here was very nice and I was a bit reluctant to leave, I decided to leave the spot to him.
Worst case scenario, I could always swallow my pride and go back home to live off my parents.
And so, with lightning speed, I snatched a piece of pork jerky the girl had left on the floor and made a high-speed getaway.
Before leaving, I took one last look back at him.
He happened to wake up. Perhaps due to the anesthesia, his gaze was a bit dazed.
I flicked my tongue at him. “Goodbye. You have to live a happy life, okay?”
