The Clan Register Is Missing You - Chapter 2

I learned my lesson.

This time, when I climbed the mountain again, I deliberately picked the identity of a senior sister with a spotless background — kind and cheerful.

Bright Peak really burns through people.

How dangerous.

And the male lead was no pushover either. This one absolutely could not be left alive.

If I couldn’t trick him into being one big loving family, I’d have to find a way to kill him.

The moment I got up the mountain, I looked for Lin Shangyun.

The disciples said cheerfully:

“He’s being a punching bag at the training grounds. You want to go hit him too, Senior Sister?”

What was the male lead, born with a holy body for getting beaten?

I immediately rode my sword over. A hero saving the beauty — wasn’t this the perfect moment for redemption!

At the training grounds, Lin Shangyun was surrounded by a crowd of disciples, his frame slight.

They cut his clothes and skin open again and again with sword qi.

The crowd snickered:

“Little trash. You parentless wretch.”

“Why don’t you dare hit us back?”

“Hahahahaha, look at his eyes.”

“Was I wrong to curse him?”

I shouted at the disciples to back off:

“Get lost.”

They froze. “Hello, Senior Sister. What brings you here?”

I pulled Lin Shangyun aside and announced, “This one’s under my protection. None of you are to bully him again.”

Lin Shangyun’s bloodstained hand twitched slightly. He lowered his eyes, very docile.

The junior brothers were a bit annoyed. “Senior Sister, why help him? He’s got a nasty temper, and he’s useless.”

“I heard he even has demon blood. If not for the masters’ mercy, this brat would’ve died a thousand times over.”

“Instead he’s just been spared, kept here as a dog.”

Demon blood.

Ah — wasn’t that family and then more family?

Delight showed in my eyes. “Wonderful. From now on, he’s my little brother.”

Everyone froze, each wearing a strange look.

Lin Shangyun explained in a low voice, “Senior Sister, you can’t claim kin so carelessly. Bright Peak has a rule: kin are held jointly liable — nine generations exterminated.”

What? What kind of bullshit rule was that for a peak?

No wonder that later, when the Demon Lord committed his crime, Lin Shangyun wiped out the Demon Lord’s sister — me — without a moment’s hesitation.

This place was all about guilt by association, nine generations, cutting the grass down to the roots, clean and thorough!

Eradicating a whole clan at the drop of a hat — the seedlings bred in a place like this couldn’t turn out well.

I took his hand and said coldly:

“No matter. Then join my nine generations. When the day comes, I’ll write you into the register.”

Lin Shangyun didn’t agree.

I said optimistically, “It’s fine, Yun’er. Whenever you’re willing, my family register will welcome you.”

His expression was complicated. He gave no answer.

And so, every day I stayed at Lin Shangyun’s side, and the senior and junior brothers who’d harassed him no longer dared come near.

I heard it was also because I was a senior sister of the legitimate line, and those of the concubine line didn’t dare provoke me.

Of course, there were also legitimate-line disciples who came to spar with me a few rounds.

If I was second in the demon realm, no one dared call themselves first.

Beating up these little cultivators was nothing.

With no one to interfere, and with me eagerly showering him with treasures, Lin Shangyun’s cultivation advanced by leaps and bounds, and soon no one dared hit him.

So everyone had been exploiting him before — because they were afraid this cultivation monster would crush them.

My little brother, raised from scratch. How comforting.

“There’s a parents’ meeting at Bright Peak this afternoon.”

“The disciples’ families come to watch them train and compete. It builds cohesion, strengthens the sense of collective honor.”

“Some parents even give their kids gifts. Boo-hoo, so enviable, so touching.”

I got this news from the junior sisters.

Lin Shangyun had gone out, without saying where, though he was dressed very neatly.

“This afternoon?”

The junior sisters nodded.

I clapped my hands together. Well now — Lin Shangyun was sneaking off to an event to avoid me.

That wouldn’t do.

We’d agreed to become family.

How could I give up?

As his future sister, I dressed up carefully and paid a fortune to have a whole cartload of flowers hauled to the banquet site.

The site had dozens of tables set up. On the stage, disciples were putting on spell battles.

The parents cheered nonstop, pointing proudly at the children onstage:

“That one breathing fire is my kid.”

“My child is a sword cultivator!”

“My Zihan can fly!”

“Why isn’t my darling standing first in line!”

So lively.

In the crowd, I spotted Lin Shangyun, all alone.

He was queued up, wearing a shabby costume — apparently part of the show too.

The boy had grown a good deal. The clothes hung on his frame; his face was gloomy, but it couldn’t hide how fine his features were.

Quite a few young men and girls kept glancing at him, not quite daring to come close.

A brother this withdrawn — his sister worried.

Only when Lin Shangyun went onstage did I learn he was playing a demon-race youth, being chased and beaten by the righteous side.

I frowned, watching him dodge this way and that below the stage, occasionally taking a spell to the face that scraped it up.

His face was full of diffidence.

The other performers had family and friends cheering them on; even those crouched on the ground as background props looked proud.

Cultivation’s scraps, their families’ little darlings.

I gathered myself, dantian surging, and cheered at the top of my lungs:

“Lin Shangyun! Lin Shangyun! My big baby!”

“You’re amazing! Your sister is so proud!”

“You’re the handsomest in the world! The handsomest! Even playing a demon, you’re this handsome?”

“Chiseled face, dashing and elegant, without rival!”

“Everyone look! The handsomest one is my brother! Take a look!”

Everyone onstage paused mid-motion.

Lin Shangyun’s body shuddered. Those phoenix eyes of his went wide, turning to me in utter alarm — disbelief in his eyes, and a feeling I couldn’t make out.

I call it shock and being moved.

The parents around me couldn’t match my screaming. They gradually quieted, glancing around, and finally fixed their eyes on Lin Shangyun.

See, little brother? The audience is cheering for you.

I gave a thumbs-up, grinning brightly.

Don’t underestimate the bond between us!

My future brother.
