Chapter 166

The woman blew a long Whistle Signal, so lingering it seemed to pierce through everything.

It didn’t take long.

From deep within the Great Fire, an old man walked out.

He was hunched and stooped, looking as though he was at death’s door, yet his eyes were sharp and spirited. Even on the mountain path wreathed in flames, his steps were steady. The most terrifying part was-there was a Shield around him.

Fire and searing heat seemed to be shut out entirely.

He emerged from the blaze and swept his heavy-lidded gaze across the four of them.

The woman turned serious at once and lowered her head. “Priest.”

Even the always-arrogant Qiu and the young man stood up and obediently bowed their heads.

Daigua did the same.

The old man looked at Daigua and frowned. “Who is he?”

A hoarse, broken-gong rasp scraped out of his throat, harsh on the ears.

The woman thought for a moment, then replied, “His name is Daigua. New arrival. He helped deliver Energy Source for the other companions. He’s stupid-completely useless.”

Just thinking about how dumb the boy was made her frown.

Daigua was so stupid that whenever she thought of him, the first thing that came to mind was stupidity, not suspicion.

The old man nodded and withdrew his gaze.

-If the woman knew this boy that well, there was nothing to worry about.

Only Aberrants ever hid among humans. No one had ever seen a human hide among Aberrants.

Who would do that?

One, it would be extremely difficult. Two, what would be the point-looking for death?

The old man didn’t say anything else. He released several transparent Shield into the flames, then turned and headed back on his own, leaving only a line behind:

“Come. The ritual is about to begin.”

The others hurriedly crawled into the Shield.

The boy followed, too, his golden eyes fixed on the transparent Shield as they rolled about.

The mountains in the plains weren’t tall, and they quickly reached the top.

The summit had already been burned clean, and instead there were no flames. It also looked as though it had been pelted by flying rubble-the peak was caved in. Hidden amid the raging fire all around, it formed a uniquely safe pocket where they didn’t even need a Shield.

The Aberrants had picked a good spot.

Only after entering the summit did they realize there were more than fifty Aberrants here!

They surrounded a pool as if waiting to carry out some kind of ritual. These cruel, violent Aberrants were, at this moment, quiet to an eerie degree.

The boy froze slightly when he saw the pool.

It was blood-extremely fresh blood.

Around it lay more than a dozen human corpses, drained dry, no breath left in them. Two bodies were still warm; blood flowed from their wrists into the Blood Pool…

The old man brought the four of them closer.

He stood beside the Blood Pool and spoke slowly. “You may prepare to begin.”

The woman immediately, practiced and familiar, took out six Meteorite Fragment-what they called Energy Source.

After looking them over, the Priest nodded. “You may stand at the First Position.”

The woman’s face lit up. She tossed the Fragment straight into the Blood Pool, then stood to the Priest’s left-the so-called First Position.

After that, Qiu and the young man did the same.

Daigua looked dazed, but he copied their actions as well.

He only provided two Fragment, but since many Aberrants still hadn’t provided any, his placement was still good: the fourth position, right beside Qiu.

The moment the Meteorite Fragment entered the Blood Pool, it began to bubble-gurgle, gurgle.

Daigua could see that there were already many Meteorite Fragment inside, sunk at the bottom of the Blood Pool.

-Even with humans guarding carefully, the Aberrants had still gathered this many Fragment without anyone noticing.

The Blood Pool was like a pot coming to a boil, bubbles surging more and more violently.

Then, a dense Special Substance spread outward from the Blood Pool, and the powerful energy made even the air feel as if it were boiling.

Daigua’s expression changed.

The energy in his body roiled. His Supernatural Ability, already at a critical threshold, seemed to be showing signs of charging toward the next level.
But the situation was turning dire-

The energy was violent, and his Supernatural Ability was becoming uncontrollable, surging restlessly as if it would explode from his body at any moment.

Daigua suppressed it with everything he had.

Glancing to the side, he saw the other Aberrants looking completely blissful. Their Supernatural Abilities were manifesting on the surface of their skin. For instance, the woman at position number one was receiving an even greater wash of energy; her figure flickered in and out, as if she were about to vanish entirely.

Once this ability of hers evolved further, she would likely be capable of full invisibility.

Qiu was the same. His Supernatural Ability seemed to be Entrapment, as strange patterns flickered beneath his feet, appearing to box him in…

Dammit!

Daigua was reaching his limit; he could hardly keep it down anymore.

The Priest frowned, but he wasn’t looking at Daigua. Instead, he stared at the Blood Pool and murmured, “The blood seems to have decreased a bit…”

Daigua quickly spoke up, “Should I go grab a couple of people?”

The Priest paused slightly and looked at him.

No wonder he was called Daigua; no wonder the woman called him stupid.

At such a critical moment… he was actually willing to give up his own chance for advancement to go out and hunt?

He was occupying the fourth position, after all-such a golden opportunity for growth.

Didn’t he notice that none of the other Aberrants had uttered a single word?

The Priest only hesitated for a second before nodding. “Go then.”

He released a Shield.

The youth ducked inside it and hurried away.

Assuming the boy was just anxious to return, the Priest didn’t give it another thought. He turned his gaze back to the Blood Pool, his eyes shimmering as the massive energy surged around them, elevating the strength of the Aberrants.

He had no way of knowing-

The moment the youth ran out of sight, he transformed into… the familiar Metal Man!

He bared his teeth and cursed under his breath, “Shit, what kind of nonsense are these Aberrants up to? It’s all so damn creepy!”

It looked eerie and sent shivers down his spine.

Fortunately, they had sensed something was wrong early on and infiltrated the area to investigate. Otherwise, they never would have known such a secret was hidden within the Great Fire…

The youth pursed his lips, his expression grim.
Less than ten minutes later, the youth returned.

The Priest was slightly taken aback.

So fast?

Did he fail to catch anyone?

He looked up, only to see the youth running out from the Great Fire, panting heavily while carrying a person in each hand.

He flashed a grin, looking both simple-minded and foolish. “I caught two!”

His tone was that of someone seeking praise.

Before the Priest could say anything, Qiu cut in, “Hurry and drain their blood into the pool. If the blood level drops, it might affect the results. I’m close to leveling up. Sooner or later-I won’t have to fear those humans anymore.”

He broke into a smile, one that was bloodthirsty to the extreme.

Sheng An and the others had known for a long time that Supernatural Abilities required human blood. In truth, the Aberrants didn’t necessarily need to eat or drink it; as long as they killed, the blood would satisfy them. This was why most Aberrants were extremely violent, leaving their victims as nothing more than mangled, bloody remains.

At this moment, with the Blood Pool right before them, the essence they craved within the blood seemed to be exactly what they needed.

Daigua nodded dumbly and set the two people on the ground.

His voice sounded vacant. “Okay, I’ll kill them right now.”

The man and woman were still conscious. As they were placed on the ground, they didn’t scream or resist. They stood there quietly, slowly lifting their heads to look at the Blood Pool and the Aberrants surrounding it.

They were far too quiet.

So quiet, in fact, that the Aberrants all looked at them with curiosity.

Then-

While the man and woman remained calm, the Aberrants were stunned.

The Priest froze where he stood. He looked at the woman’s face, then the man’s, before his gaze finally locked onto the woman.

These two faces were far too familiar.

In utter disbelief, his hoarse voice rose to a shrill, piercing screech-

“These are the people you ‘caught’?!”

He had fucking “caught” the leader of their greatest enemies and brought her right inside!
