When My Sister Was Bound to a Love Quest System - Chapter 1

When I was little, I came down with a terrible fever. My brain had already been missing a screw or two; afterward, things only got worse.

I was slow to react, and it took me longer than everyone else to learn anything.

Mom often stroked the back of my head and sighed. “Zhi, you need to teach your little sister more.”

Zhi was my older sister. If she belonged in the heavens, I was somewhere under the earth.

She was the kind of perfect child every other parent wished they had—brilliant in school, athletic, artistic, hardworking. Good at everything.

My sister would puff out her little chest, take my hand, and beam with pride. “Of course! From now on, I’m your role model. Just do what I do.”

To me, she was a superhero radiating light. There was nothing she couldn’t do.

Whenever people saw me, they would say enviously, “That’s Yu Zhi’s little sister. She’s so lucky to have such an amazing big sister!”

It made me very happy.

So I made a solemn vow in my heart: My sister was the best sister in the world. Everything she did was right, and I would work hard to learn from her.

Later, I was sent abroad for several years to recover. I spoke to my sister less and less.

At first, Mom and Dad happily shared news about her whenever we talked on the phone. Eventually, they stopped mentioning her altogether. Now, all they ever did was sigh and say, “It’s like someone took over your sister’s body.”

The moment my health improved, I decided to fly home in secret and surprise her.

Before going to her school, I found its confession page online. Someone in the comments called my sister “the Jiaxin from the class next door.”

At first, I didn’t understand what that meant.

Then I saw her kneeling in the pouring rain, crying so beautifully that the sight could break anyone’s heart.

She was begging the boy in front of her to accept her love letter.

He stood beneath the first-floor covered walkway with his hands in his pockets and impatience written all over his face. My sister was only one step away from shelter, yet she had chosen to kneel in the rain. Her shoulders shook, making her look utterly miserable.

Mocking eyes surrounded her from every direction.

I reached for the car door without thinking.

Uncle Wang immediately locked it. “Miss Yu, you’re too frail to get soaked again. Your sister has been like this for a year. Everyone’s tried to talk sense into her, but nothing works. Maybe she has her own ideas.”

He sighed. “No one knows what kind of spell that He boy put on her.”

As he spoke, the boy snatched the sodden letter from my sister’s hand and curled his lip in disdain. Then he crumpled it right in front of her and tossed it into the trash.

I drew back my hand and stared without blinking at my sister’s lonely silhouette in the rain.

So that was how things were.

Yet it didn’t seem strange to me.

My sister had always excelled at everything. If she was doing this, she must have had her reasons.

That afternoon, during the break between classes, my sister changed into dry clothes. Her hair was still damp as she said pitifully to the boy, “He Yuan, it doesn’t matter if you don’t like me. It’s enough that I like you.”

I stood quietly outside the classroom, committing every word she said to memory.

“Tch.”

Someone snickered.

“I can’t believe you actually went out in the rain just because I mentioned it.”

The speaker was a sweet-looking girl. She sat beside He Yuan, smiling with crescent eyes.

“Yu Zhi, you’ve somehow sunk even lower than I thought possible. Stop trying to force your way into a circle that doesn’t want you.”

My sister paused, then slowly forced an ingratiating smile. “It’s okay, Lin Wei! You and He Yuan grew up together. I know you didn’t mean any harm.”

Lin Wei raised her phone with a meaningful look. “Then you won’t mind if I upload that video, right? It’s not as if one more will make a difference. Everyone at school already knows we have a great romantic martyr on our hands.”

He Yuan glanced lazily at my sister. His eyes held nothing but contempt, as though every humiliation she suffered was her own fault.

My sister lowered her head, apparently deep in thought. From a distance, she looked terribly wronged.

She rubbed one arm without thinking.

Lin Wei’s gaze fell on her coat.

“I’m a little cold too. Let me wear that. You said I was younger and you wouldn’t hold things against me—that you’d treat me like a little sister. Right, Sis?”

At that exact moment, I called out too.

“Sis.”

Her “Sis” and mine overlapped.
