Chapter 2

Ever since I received the notification from the Management Bureau, I stopped messaging Yin Ran.

I also stopped nagging him to come home.

Our chat history became abnormally quiet.

A week later, Yin Ran actually took the initiative to contact me for once.

[I’ve called a private doctor to come over and give you a checkup.]

Me: [? I’m not sick.]

[The butler said you’ve been spacing out lately and don’t care for buying bags or clothes anymore. Is it not because you’re feeling unwell?]

[No, I’m perfectly fine.]

[Hm.]

If this were before, I would have already blurted out how much I loved him, missed him, and wanted to sleep with him.

But this time, I didn’t reply at all.

On the other end, Yin Ran’s status kept switching to ‘typing…’

After a long while, he finally squeezed out four words: [I’m coming home tomorrow.]

My inner chatterbox immediately took over, and my fingers flew across the screen:

[So soon? Actually, there’s no need to be in such a rush ^_^ Everything is fine at home. You should stay with your unit and focus on your work. The country needs you; don’t always worry about our little family.]

After the message was sent, Yin Ran didn’t reply again.

He must have been moved by my consideration.

I just hoped that when the truth finally came out, he would remember me with a bit of kindness.

However, I never expected what happened next.

Half an hour later, Yin Ran was home.

He looked travel-worn, as if he had dropped his work and rushed back specifically for me.

Without even taking off his military uniform, he pressed his palm against my forehead.

“Body temperature is normal, breathing is normal, scent is normal. You aren’t sick.”

“Hey, I told you, I’m really not sick.”

“Then why aren’t you going out shopping? Your favorite brands release new items every Monday. You used to go and buy so much.”

“Uh, I just wanted to save you some money.”

“There’s no need for that.” Yin Ran looked at me sternly. “I will earn back whatever you spend. I didn’t marry you to save money.”

But I couldn’t exactly tell him the truth.

It was because we were going to get a divorce sooner or later.

During the silence, Yin Ran suddenly picked me up and started walking toward the bedroom.

“You’ve always wanted me to do it with you while I’m wearing this uniform… Just for today, this once.”

“No, no, it’s fine!”

I hurriedly scrambled out of his arms.

“Your work is exhausting, right? How could I drain you the moment you get home? I wouldn’t be human if I did that. You should rest. Are you hungry? I’ll cook something myself today.”

Slipping away as if my feet were greased, I ducked into the kitchen like I was escaping a crime scene.

Before closing the door, I caught a glimpse of Yin Ran out of the corner of my eye. He was still standing there in the same posture he’d used to hold me, looking completely at a loss.

After a while, he came to the kitchen to find me.

“An emergency came up. I have to go back and handle it.”

“Sure, go ahead.”

“I’ll come back as soon as I’m done.”

“Don’t be in such a rush. Focus on your business.”

“It’s rare for you to cook yourself. I must eat this meal.”

Looking at him, a plan formed in my mind. “I’ll bring it to you once it’s ready. You’re always running back and forth; it’s too tiring.”

“That works.”

Yin Ran agreed immediately, which was outside my expectations.

Perhaps because I was a human, he hadn’t liked me going to the military headquarters in the past.

I had intended to use the offer as a polite brush-off.

Who knew he would actually agree?

Did Yin Ran take the wrong medicine today?

As soon as he left the house, I immediately called the chef over to take over.

Once the chef finished the meal, I slowly meandered over to the headquarters.

The headquarters building was incredibly grand. Much like Yin Ran himself-that wolf of a man-it carried an intense sense of pressure.

Standing at the intersection, I called Yin Ran. “I’m at the usual spot. Tell your Aide to come and pick it up.”

“Come straight in.”

His deep, magnetic voice came through the line.

“I’ll have the guards let you through.”

“That’s probably not a good idea. This is a top-secret facility; outsiders aren’t allowed in.”

“It’s fine. I’d like to see who dares to stop you.”

“But I’ve always waited at the intersection before…”

Yin Ran paused on the other end.

“Just come in.”

Maybe it was my imagination, but his voice seemed to have softened slightly.

But I really didn’t want to go in.

We’re going to get a divorce anyway, so why am I building a presence here now?

However, Yin Ran’s decisions were not to be refused.

I could only steel myself and walk inside.

Along the way, I received many strange looks.

Because beastmen possessed natural physical advantages, places like the military were their home turf.

A human appearing here was truly bizarre.

Some beastman even called out to me, “Hey, how did you get in? Do those guys at the gate want to lose their jobs?!”

After being informed that I was Yin Ran’s wife, the man looked me up and down repeatedly. “Her?”

I didn’t miss the contempt in his tone.

Yin Ran’s marriage was just that embarrassing to show off.

When I reached the door of the Supreme Commander’s office, quite a commotion was coming from inside.

“Yin Ran, you promised to have dinner with me today. How could you forget again?”
